Modding My Xbox360 - Yes or No?

Hello Cunts!

I've had my 360 for a month or so now and am bloody happy with it. Its a lovely complement to my Wii and the HD stuff looks the nuts.

NOW.. i'm unsure if i should upgrade the firmware on my sammy drive within the warranty period. Usually i wait which hasn't really been a problem in the past as mods haven't been out untill well after any warranty has expired.

Also, This Live thing? I've heard varying reports. Some say you can use it with the firmware upgrade, others say you should be wary.

So.. What do you think? Idealy i would wait but i'd rather buy legit games for my Wii and there is quite a meaty back catalogue of stuff out for the 360 now.

So..... Yes or No?

with warranty NO DONT DO IT .

when it expires go for it

as for live NOBODY has been baned for using xtreme firmware online YET

the next dashboard update is just around the corner so who knows

in theory m$ can detect xtreme firmware but appear not to be doin anything about it at the mo.

and some people had issues with the last dashboard update

also remeber certain consoles have the red lights of death issue's etc

not worth the risk imho

my gamertag is darlowad add me and get owned

done mine last week worked a treat and real easy to do go for it

I've been thinking about having a go of the custom firmware myself but that hole red ring of dead thing put me off.
I use the custom firmware on my psp and its the business. Is it as reliable at that?
Is their any mod chip thats worth looking into(anyone that will let you play xvid files directly on it)

Posted by Neversoft on 03-27-2007 05:35 PM:

Personally I'd only ever let an expert "fitter" install a modchip for me... And I'd make sure he was a skinny nerd so I can threaten him if it fucks up

Make sure you wear the reindeer antlers, you look extra 'thug' like then!

404, do it. It's a Samsung drive and I've done three of them (one for myself and two for friends) without issue at all. You flat out NEED the right SATA card (the via 6421) as you'll likely have an MS28 drive but it's honestly really simple.

It's about as risky as doing the original Xbox mod.

The firmware CAN'T be detected by MS on Live, there's in depth technical explanations as to why this is so. The other issue with MS is they don't really care, they've made it more difficult to do on newer boxes and on older models and the actual mod itself can only play 1:1 backups so no cheating can take place.

If you want a hand or get stuck, just give me a shout on MSN, I'm not on IRC much nowadays due to gf/life/money/health issues that take up my time

I recently downloaded all the stuff I needed to do a friends so I can send it to you.

Firstly pick up:

Or find one in stock.

from a comment above.

No need to mod if you're just wanting to play xvid. Just get Tversity or Orb. Now if you're wanting to play burned games, thats another story.

I personally wouldnt do it till after the warranty, as i've heard all these horror stories of perfectly fine 360's with the "Red Light of Death" mysteriously after an update.

I wouldnt risk it.

PS 404, my gamertag is napalmfuzz (did you see that one coming) so add me if you want.

I uses Tversity it works great but just wondering was their a mod that lets you play xvid directly without a pc. How long it the warranty on the xbox for?.

Posted by 404notfound on 03-28-2007 11:11 AM:

So, an update.

I wouldn't be doing it myself. I know someone who has firmware updated 70+ and hasn't bricked one yet (touch wood). He'll obviously charge me but its only 25 quid. I don't have the confidence to do it myself.

NOW... he and a few other folk online said the firmware update wont void the warrenty. Seems a tad suss to me but i've looked around and folk seemed to have got replacements within the 12 month warrenty period.

This red light thing freaks me out tbh and might have swayed me towards PS3 had i known before. It seems like it can happen during any update, with a firmware upgrade or not.

So.. I'm still confused. Looking at the price of games I picked out 10 really good belters i would love to get my hands on now... but each retailed at 40 quid

Oh.. As for my gamertag. Its my real name. Can I change this (i didn't really think it through). I haven't had a look around Live to check yet and it was down yesterday.

The red lights from the firmware upgrade occur as follows (from memory):

INitially if it's a reconditioned box, you had a new dvd drive put in BY microsoft and you do the update (issue fixed apparently)

There are two versions (maybe more now) of the samsung drive. MS25 and MS28. The initial firmware hacks were done based on MS25 firmware. When the MS28 was flashed with this, initially it would work. The update detected it was MS25 firmware running on an MS28 drive and flashed up the 3 rings.

I had this. Problem easily fixed by flashing to a later version of the xtreme firmware (Based on the MS28 firmware)

So don't shit a brick about doing it. It's perfectly safe.

360 are non brickable you can always flash back to your initial firmware

but once the case is open warranty is gone forever

its the risk you take

i no peeps who have flashed and there 360 died

i no people who flashed since day 1 and have had no probs

its up to you

the "Red lights" are not that big of a deal. It used to be, but if you've just recently purchased your 360, its not likely to happen. Dont be buyin a PS3 lol, i wouldnt want ya to be bored.

The shall i?, shant i? is doing my nut in. I've been reading on the forums and it happens a LOT and apparently Shn's has just gone the way of the dodo.

At the moment i'm leaning towards NOT doing it and modding my Wii instead.

The guy who modded it for me has been using live on his modded xbox for a year with no problems. I'll let you know but as far as i can tell MS cant tell if your box is modded

I didn't get an abusive voice message

Grinch.. Your xbox live account? Did you give your readl address etc when you signed up? Mine was linked to my hotmail account

Also... What media are you using? I grabbed so cheap ones, Virtua Tennis looks fine, Dead Rising flagged up an unreadable error after 5 mins.

Might have to invest in the Verbatims after all

my opinion..

its still too early, only the dvd firmware has been cracked..and you still have warranty.
360s are very expensive, not worth the risk.

if you want something to play with, softmod your xbox or use the independence exploit on your ps2 and play with homebrew..heck, even the psp is wide open.

Posted by pHo on 04-06-2007 01:25 AM:

I really should get mine done, I've stripped it down but had incompatabily issues with the 2 sata controllers on my PC (and didn't have my 3rd controller available, dunno which one it is either).

Mines out of warranty (and I voided it anyway) so hey, might's well. Can think of plenty of games I'd give a shot at which I'd never consider buying like.
