Skipping DVD

I have downloaded 2 different movies that play fine on my computer both are avi's (no comments on downloading avi). However, I burn them to a dvd using Nero and pop it in my standalone dvd player. Now every couple of seconds the frame will freeze then skip to another scene. It does this throughout the whole movie. Now I have played other avi's just fine using the same type of media (Memorex) on this DVD player without any problems. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be and the fix for it?

is your disc scratched?

No, almost perfect. When Nero poped out the disc tray I took the cd from that and put it in my dvd player to try it out.

What type of avi file was it.? What model standalone do you have.? Does it support avi or did you convert the avi to another format.? If so, with what program.? What speed memorex did you use and what speed did you burn at.? Also like Sobaku said, is the media scratched. Someone will answer your question if, A: You give specific details or B: The person answering has some errie 6th sense and can answer it with out knowing any of the facts.

Well some of these questions were answered, just waiting for my post to actually make it to the bored. But I will answer it again. I am not sure the type, if you let me know how to find out I will look it up. My standalone is a Samsung and it supports pretty much everything, I have watched avi's in it before with no problem. I just left the avi alone, and just tried to burn it to disc since I knew it should play in the player and didn't feel like waiting for it to convert. I have 8x Memorex DVD+R Media. I just set the burner to burn at MAX. The media is not scratched, it is close to being perfect, it comes out of the Memorex bin into the dvd try, burned, then straight into the dvd standalone player.

Now I have played AVI's in my dvd player before using this method with no problems at all. But these two movies continually skip through the whole movie and is impossible to watch. The video files them self on my computer work great.

Not to sure the problem, any help is appreciated.

I'm assuming that you're simply burning the AVI directly to the disc, rather than converting it over to a DVD MPEG.

Chances are it's the codec.. while many DVD players can use DivX, I don't think that many of them can use XviD. Your computer won't particularly care one way or the other, but that may be what's causing your standalone to have trouble.

Posted by doctor zoidy on 05-09-2005 10:08 PM:

also, try burning a slow speed disk, ive had plenty of disks come out fine at 16x, but everynow and again, regardless of conditions, a file doesnt run properly on the standalone... 9 times out of 10, burning it at 4x fixes it... dont know if its bad bitrates, corrupt files... it gets fixed

Yes I was just simply burning the AVI to a disc, I didn't feel like waiting for it to convert. However, I will go ahead and try to convert it using winavi and I will see if that works...I will also do it at a slower speed...Thanks guys..

Posted by danimal39 on 05-09-2005 11:24 PM:

another thing besides burning a slow speed ,if your using nero hit verify to check your disc,i,ve had as high as 60% failure with memorex, they suck

Posted by Fionn McCool on 05-10-2005 12:12 AM:

Download the program Avicodec
Run the program and select your avi file. Look at the video bar to see if your file is Divx or XviD. Do a google search on the model of your Samsung standalone to see what formats it supports. If it supports only Divx (more than likely) and your file is Xvid then there's your problem. You might have to convert the XviD to dvd with Tmpegnc if its worth it. Theres loads of guides for this on the net, just google .If its not a codec problem try buring the avi to cd-r. Otherwise maybe your media is poor and you should try burning at half the recommended speed like Dr Zoidy said.

Posted by antihero on 05-10-2005 08:22 PM:

i think its a question of the avi codec rather than the media or burn, but i could be wrong.

standalones are ok when it comes to divx (unless its encoded using Qpel or BMC), but are damn fussy about xvids. Loading the avi into gspot (freeware) will give you all the info you need.

Posted by TheSnowMan on 05-11-2005 05:49 AM:

I just went ahead and took the time to encode it using WinAVI and both movies work perfect. Guess it doesn't pay to take the lazy way out..

Ok, thought I would bring this back up because I am running into the same problems again. This time a different format. I am still using Memorex media. I am using DVD Decrypter put the video from a actual non-backup version movie on to my computer. I am doing this by making it an image. Then I was going to attempt to put it back on a disc using dvd decrypter but the image was to big. I then loaded it into DVD Shrink, and told it to shrink it then to burn it to disc at 8x speed. After this was done I took it out of the dvd burner and stuck it in my standalone. It loaded and played fine until about the middle where it started to skip every couple of seconds. The disc has no scratches on it at all. This is no the first movie to start skipping in the middle of the movie. I then tried to right it at 6x speed using the same process as above and the movie doesn't even load now to play. What the fuck is going on here? Somebody please recommend another media besides Memorex that has given better results. Thanks for any help..

Personally I don't worry too much about the manufacturer (cos they're generally all coming from the same few production plants) but pay attention to the dye used.

Wherever possible I only buy DVD's with the Fuji Dye (normally "Datawrite Classic Grey" cos that's what my local store sells). What I would avoid though is the bulk non-brand "white top" DVDs and crap like that, irrespective of the dye used.

Or maybe your writer is fucked or you're having buffering problems mid-way through the burn? You could also try mounting the image in Daemon Tools and watching it on the PC to ensure the skipping isn't in the encode.

I have never thought about checking the dye, and I didn't think I was buying a cheap brand. I usually always mount the image with daemon tools and watch it there before trying to burn. I have a Sony DVD Burner, it wasn't the most expensive I could find but also not the cheapest. The burner writes at 16x speed but the media I bought is only max at 8x speed. I didn't think that would be a problem, but you never know. The burner is also farely new, alone with the standalone. Is there a way I could perhaps fix the buffering problem, or even find out if I am having one?

Posted by MarkMathers on 06-16-2005 05:08 AM:

i am also having a problem similar to this....i have verbatim dvd-r and have burned a movie (ntsc,no region) to it using dvd decrypter at 4x. When i went to play this dvd in my samsung and toshiba (which both play dvd-r's, i have tried them both before)they will not play. However when i tried my neighbors cheap walmart brand dvd player, it works....i wonder what i could be...i was thinking maybe it wasnt a ntsc issue (ie. they only said it was ntsc) but when i checked the ifo in ifoedit it says its ntsc.....any ideas?

Posted by Neversoft on 06-16-2005 10:24 AM:

Seriously guys, experiment with the different dyes, I've never had a single DVD player bork at that Fuji dye (although I'm sure some do).

As for the possible buffering problem - most burning software shows you meters for the buffers when burning, one for the "Windows" buffer and one for the writers own buffer... If the writers own buffer starts to drop during a burn, you may be having problems. The best thing I could suggest would be to ensure that you close any resource-hogging programs and store your "data" on a seperate physical drive (not a partition) to your main hard disk. Also, turn on the "speed detection" option in your burner software, just in case it can't transfer fast enough for an 8x burn - although it should.

Oh, and defrag your drives or better still, install Diskeeper and forget about defragging forever

Well I will be headed out to the store tomorrow to buy me some new dvd-r's, going with the FUJI brand, should be the right dye. Hopefully that will fix the problem, kind of tired of this b.s. skipping on random movies.

Thanks for the help, will report success/failure tomorrow..

Unhappy skipping

Let me know how you get on with the other discs cause I have the same problem as you, I have updated all the codecs and burned on to 2 types of discs but I get the same probem, when i use nero to create dvd's, I just burned of star wars ep3 on to a dvd and the first 45mins is fine, then it starts to jump i dont know what its all about. works fine on the pc but in every other dvd player it jumps so I could do with some advice also cheers!!

Just thought I would add an update for anyone who cares. I went out to my local store and picked up some Fujifilm DVD-R 8x Speed blank dvds. So far I have burned 4 different movies. 3 of those movies I have never burned before and 1 of them I have and it had skipped. Out of the 4 movies, none of them skipped. I did have one of the movies audio go out of sync for the first half, kinda weird, but that was not the disc problem. I definatly reccomend these disc of the Memorex. Thanks for all the help guys, glad I got this problem solved.

Glad we could help. Also, that DVD going out of sync... Try pausing the playback for a few seconds then unpause it - works on my player on the (rare) occaisions it gets it's head up it's ass.

I use fujifilm discs too..the japanese ones (light purple on top), which use the taiyo yuden dye...swear by them, never had one coaster yet. It might be tempting to buy the cheapest disc you can find, but in the long run ive found it pays dividends to shell out that extra 2p per disc...glad you got it sorted.

Posted by TheSnowMan on 06-22-2005 04:34 PM:

Sweet, I will try that sync fix. I am converting an avi to dvd format using winavi and neither of those have a sync problem. When I put it on disc it looses sync for like half of the first half of the movie. Stupid problems, I will try that out though.

I figured when it came to buying blank DVDS, unlike blank CDs, buying cheap would be bad. So I went with Memorex thinking they were high quality. Lesson learned...

I made the mistake of buying the budget crap, ever since I bought "Datawrite" and they are very good. Costs a little more but worth it. Where are you based? UKDVDR and Bigpockets are a good source for them.

That's why I mentioned em... The Datawrite Grey on Fuji dye are flawless. I can't remember ever having a bad burn with them and my NEC3500, although I'm sure I have... Once

for the past few months ive been using 8x datawrite yellow. they are absolutely perfect and work on almost any player ever made (well, probably). ive done copies for around 30 different friends and not one person has said they are glitchy or faulty in any way. they also play perfectly on my PS2, arianet dvd player, and LG DR4810 dvd recorder

Posted by nykid on 07-13-2005 10:35 PM:

I also had a similar problem. I have burned many dvd's with my NEC, I use Ritek ridata g04 branded dvd's 8x. I would burn the same movie on my desktop computer with nero or dvd decrypter , but if I burn the movie on my dell laptop which uses a sony dvd+-RW DW D56A I get skipping. any ideas?

Posted by cruisin50s on 07-14-2005 09:58 PM:

Hi guys i have used a variety of Disc's and in most cases have found the BEST solution is to burn at a slower speed even 2x, i have had disc's fail at a higher speed but work OK when burn't at 2x,also the xvid avi is usually converted by Nero when you burn the movie, so that should not be the problem, if you use Nero 6,I have never had a problem, with an Avi not playing, but speed definately does effect the outcome
