New to burning dvds please help

Hey im having some problems burning dvds...im new to this so bare with me here...heres my problem:

I downloaded Nero 6 and im trying to make a dvd...i tried burning a Super Video CD and a Video CD...i have this file thats like 2.2 gigs big and i got a disc that can fit 4.7 gigs...but the thing is when i drag this file in and its an mpeg by the way...it freezes w hen it converts it or something...anything im doing wrong?...also if theres another good burning program that might nto have this problem please let me in on it...also help me on the process of bruning dvds...like i dont know how to fit the full 4.7 gigs on one disc...thanks
