404 is buying a new PC and needs your help, you cunts!

I know this should probably be in the computer forum, but as best I can tell only my Nan goes in there looking for porn. Silly old fool. I will move it in there after a week or so of 'intellectual debate and opinion'

Anyway I'm going to buy a new PC. I'd quite like to be able to output HD video onto my TV and i'd also like to play solitaire once in a while. My budget is about £1,500. So, suggestions please.

GO! GO! GO!

::edit - I'm probably being glib with regards to solitaire. In reality, i'd quite like a machine that can pretty much take any game I throw at it - at least for the next year.

Are you wanting to buy a ready built pc or buy the parts and build yourself?

I have zero knowledge about building a PC, although I'm sure it can't be that hard. At the moment I'm going the ready built route.

I did consider using DELL, having got my last PC from there 6 years ago and while slow it is still going strong. I'm just not sure what to get in terms of graphics cards, outputs etc

::edit. Was looking at the XPS machines on DELL. Any thoughts?

The dell XPS machines are reasonable, but you won't be able to play EVERYTHING you throw at it without some overhaul in some very key places.

My recommendation:

Build your own:

Intel Quad Core 2.5
Asus P5Q Mainboard (supports upgrade to the Extreme Quad proc when the time comes )
2gb OCZ PC1200 DDR2 ram (4 if you decide to run 64bit)
GeForce 9 series video with at least 512, preferably 1gb

pick a case, add 800watt PSU, and Vista (for media and DX10 support)

and pay around $1100 US

guaranteed to play Conan with no issues, and anything else you want to put with it.

As well as the Dell ebay outlet have a look at the dell outlet that doesn't evolve bidding it a bit more expensive
http://www.dell.co.uk/outlet

for dell's main site have a look for codes at http://www.dmxdimension.com/

http://www.ankermann-pc.com/uk/ also look to have good prices/

Posted by Ripper on 08-11-2008 06:30 AM:

If your in wales you can use a store on city road in cardiff that sells parts cheap like mobo, ram etc and they will build it for you for small fee and guarantee it etc..

Alll you do is take it home and install windows of your choice then plug and play

Will have a look for there web addy so you can have a look if you want.
For the money your looking to spend then you can have a top spec machine that can play everything, then when the graphics card gets on you sell it on and plug in a new card and games will continue to flow

Aria.co.uk - well built, reliable systems that you can either spec yourself or take one of their prebuilt PC's. Check out their Titan gaming range... They also have a helpline run by technicians/engineers instead of some gimp.

P.S. 404 is a cunt.

Yep it's called land of computers, heres the web site

http://landofcomputers.uk.com/

Also have some funky boxes in there too, plus you spending cash like you are, knock em down with the power of the cash £££££

I'd recommend this site http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/ . Select by spec or have them do you a customized one, select the parts you want, they build it and ship it to you. They don't charge much either.

Posted by Spank on 08-12-2008 12:20 PM:

or you could try www.novatech.co.uk

not expensive, good spec fo your monies and they deliver and shit!

1. Give the money to me
2. I send you this shitbox in the post
3. You end up with a PC pre-loaded with porn
4. I buy myself some new gold legs and a Thai bride

See? It's a win-win situation.

Good list, just avoid low end GeForce 8x00 and ALL 9x00 cards as they are defective. Pretty much only the original 8800GTS and 8800GTX are not affected by a manufacturing flaw that are causing NVidia cards to drop like flies. Glad I got my 8800GTS back in the day

So, I've decided to go the build my own route, but my knowledge on internal components is slightly vague. Would everyone agree that the items listed are the ones to go for, or does anyone have any other recommendations?

Also, what are peoples thoughts on HTPC's? Like these...

I have a macbook pro now, it's very pretty altho it does appear that I've warped the superdrive housing a bit.

Next time you're in wales, let me know. We'll go drinking and I'll leave you for dead in an alley somewhere for a laugh.

Charleston Grill on Caroline St is my favourite place ever at the moment. I think it's called that, I've been mistakingly calling it Taurus for about 5 months then realised Taurus was around the corner.

The chef at Taurus in Cardiff looks more bovine than most cows.

He cooks a bloody nice steak though

I'll check out the Charleston next time I'm down
