So with this movie now so close to release...

Do I go and get the comic series FIRST since I know absolutely nothing about the story at all OR do I watch the movie and then go read the comic...????

I'm not a comic book "nerd" but I always kind of wished I was...it was just a thing I kinda skipped over in my childhood.

Anyways I can't help be pretty excited for this movie just knowing about the "comic nerd" fanfare surrounding it all.

So to all who have or do read comics: Do I call the local comic shop and have them get me a copy of the set, or do I go see the movie first?

Also here's the awesome trailer that got me so pumped before watching the movie PUSH.

Go to your local comic store and get the paperback. I bought it on Amazon after seeing the first trailer for Watchmen and loved it. Probably enhance your enjoyment of the movie.

I bought 2 sets of original prints on e-bay in about 2001...one to read, one to keep in mint. Hoping the movie will be as huge as expected...for my pocket as well as artistic reasons.

(Also have 2 unopened boxes of limited edition Spidey cards from 1995 with McFarlane artwork...have never had them valued...could be worth a few pennies now.)

wouldn't build your hopes up, hollywood tends to fuck these things up spectacularly, I read the graphic novel of wanted which was brilliant, the film was the biggest pile of shit I saw last year and bore absolutely no similarity to the book other than the title.

People from Bradford can read?

(being a Barnsley lad living in Wakefield I get to say that... Most of the people in Wakefield have 11 toes on each hand )

Back on topic - the trailer looks pretty damned good so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Lots of decent-looking action movies coming up though and no doubt most of them will turn out to suck...

... I'd comment on the "graphic novel" but last time I read a comic I was 10 and it was The Beano*

lol, I was gonna put comic but being nearly 40 I thought it best to put graphic novel, it makes me sound sophisticated ( you could even think I was from Barnsley/Wakefield except I dont have enough digits)

I read the Watchmen comic/graphic novel and was like, well...meh? Obviously since its so highly rated I don't think comics are my thing.

Man you're old!!!

Remember a buddy having some of the comics, read a few but never really got into them though they were pretty interesting. Comics just were never my thing. But the movie does look pretty good from what I've seen in the trailers.

If you are able to keep your expectations from the book to a minimum, its a quality film. however if you are a rabid fan it might be disappointing to an extent.

Vols 1-4 of the comic book available on Xbox Live for 1600 points.

If you are talking about CAMERA's rls, don't bother, its a fucking hideous cam.

Posted by HoldDaSalad on 03-08-2009 03:37 AM:

I just checked out the Sample. It's not as bad as it could be. It's not a good cam either. I'd wait for a better release or go to the theater to fucking see it.

Why would anyone watch a cam of this movie (or 300, or Sin City, or any Pixar, or...or...)?

Wait for a rip at worst or preferably DVD/x264/HD.

Or, seriously, download the fucking cbr for CDisplay - and that will explain better than I can why this should be seen unpixelated, full screen, correctly lit, and in vivid and perfect-tone colours - or get your fucking arse to a cinema.

A cam of Watchmen...seriously?!?

German Video / English Audio

Coming soon to a TS near you ?

(Just guessing as the german video is alot better but not perfect . slight tilt, ar, etc)

Anyone else get the newest Caligula directors cut ? I didn't see it listed at all but it is out there with all the uncut scenes. (Prolly needs it's own thread).
Nothing like a pron movie with a 15+ million dollar budget.

is there movie releases on the forums

Posted by punzada on 03-10-2009 11:08 AM:

Never read the 'graphic novel' so no pre-fanboyism for this so had no real expectations.

That's a good thing cause this movie was shit.

Posted by Fionn McCool on 03-10-2009 06:15 PM:

I thought it was really good, enjoyed seeing the charaters come to life. I did wonder though if people who had not read the comic would like it. Even though Snyder tried to cram a lot in, it was missing the feeling of the book. The central theme didn't transfer to the screen as well as I thought it might and a fair bit of the meaning was lost. Still, looking forward to a repeat viewing when the extended directors cut is released.

All the uncut scenes...? It'd have to run 210 minutes + the additional Guccione hardcore scenes.

There are more versions and myths about versions of Caligula than probably virtually any other movie. If you're interested:

Back on Watchmen...planning to see it Thursday night, but the reviews from friends - at least those who have an opinion on movies I trust - have been lukewarm to unfavourable. But none of them had ever read the comics, so I'm still hoping it'll be to my liking.

I didn't read the comic or the paperback so I had no expectations or preconceptions regarding Watchmen. I saw it on a very large screen. There were only four others in the theatre. The portrayal was indeed graphically violent and bloody. Along the same lines (or moreso) as the Punisher II: War Zone movie. The friend who accompanied me said that the movie was a fair representation of the comic at least in terms of the graphic portrayals of violence. There is one sex scene in the film as well. The movie took quite a bit of time explaining and showing the backgrounds of all of the main characters (backward in time storytelling). In fact the majority of the movie was spent this way. It was necessary in order to understand the story which comes together in the last twenty minutes or so. And it is a good story too. The ending was not at all predictable. I would see it again even though in general I am not a fanboy of this type of movie. Terrific special effects too. I don't really understand why it was necessary for the blue guy, Dr. Manhatten, to walk through the whole movie with his schlong exposed.

Downloaded "Watchmen The End Is Nigh" on Xbla tonight. It's repetitive but the graphics are nice and it's fun.

The flashbacks are pretty much how the comics tells the story. And Dr M spends the comics mostly naked, so again staying true.

Watched it last night. Really enjoyed it. Didn't think they could ever do it justice on the big screen, but they did. There were lots missed out - the newsstand vendor is in the comics a lot, as is a kid that reads a comic about pirates - and that comic with a parallel storyline line about a man stranded on an island struggling to get back to his hometown to save 'his world' from the doom of the pirates that attacked him plays out with significant story time in the comics, but doesn't feature at all in the movie.

None of that is truly important though. It's an adult comic that is done justice with an adult movie that doesn't compromise. If anything - and kudos to the filmmakers for it! - the movie is harsher and (IMO) more graphic. Rare that.

Strangely though, it's not an SFX extravaganza. There are plenty enough, virtually every scene in fact, but they don't overpower the tale. Respect to that too.

I'll watch this again a few times, no doubt.

8.5/10

I also plan on seeing it again and perhaps taking a look at the comic. Thanks for your enlightening comments, Baha.

Just saw it, loved it. Only five thirty-something men in the cinema of which I was one - says something about Friday afternoon cinema goers, or geeks in general, I'm not sure.

Anyway I thought it was great, one of the most uncompromising pieces of film I've seen in a long time - I haven't read the comics but I want to now.

Just wish I'd known the downloadable movies on XBLM where frame-for-shot copies of the movie though and I would have avoided them. Luckily I only watched through to the fourth chapter, which was about close to halfway through the actual movie.

Posted by djpecker on 03-21-2009 03:35 AM:

I saw this the other day and thought it was shit.

Well not complete shit but i didn't think it was very good.

All the fanboys and nerds are cumming themselves over it but the fact its a comic book with a patchy story turned into a film covered in cgi with dull actors made we wonder what all the fuss was about.
