usenet problems...
Hi all, Im new t othis site. I would appreciateall the help i can get. I read the post about how to download movies. I chose thee usenet method.
I have optonline and the usenet stinks not such a variety of stuff on there, very vague categories. what use net is the best to use?
thanks
Leo
::EDIT:: No discussing specific Newsgroups folks, but feel free to assist with regards to providers etc (In other words, keep it legal!!) - NS::
MOST decent providers will carry all the groups you want. Your best bet is to check out a nzb site or two, and sign up for a 3 day trial that most providers give.
newshosting seemed pretty good.

newshosting or giganews in my opinion both have good retention and great completion. newshosting is cheaper tho.
newshosting is good, never had any problems....good retention, and as mentioned, its cheap! good for me, cos im a stingy bastard.
Before you start paying for news service, check with your ISP.
Mine does provide access to newsgroups, with unlimited monthly downloads and 1.8MBPS. However it's only 3 days retention.

What stinks?

Oh, it's just JC
Newshosting and (correct me if I am wrong) giganews both have good retention, newshosting is 30 days in most cases, and offer UNLIMITED download bandwidth. I personally am using newshosting currently and they keep up quite well with my 3meg internet connection.
Good luck and shop around to find what suits you!

NZB files are "indexes" of usenet, say you want to grab a film but you don't know if it has been posted, normally you would have to pick a newsgroup (can't name any here but use your imagination), point your news reader software at it, download all of the headers (and just the headers can be hundreds of megabytes), find the post (amongst the other thousand), select all the files and then proceed to download them.
Join up to an NZB site and they list all film/apps/console/games that have been posted to usenet, from here you can download the NZB file (usually less than a megabyte), plop it into your news reading software and sit and watch as it downloads as fast as your connection allows.
If you really want to learn about usenet slycks guide will fill you in about PAR and PAR2 files and sign up to www.newzbin.com for reports on posts (there are alternatives to newzbin but they don't seem anywhere near as complete and fast) newzbin have their own IRC server aswell with a dedicated support channel for newbies and Q&A about premium (pay for) news providers aswell as ISP providers etc. etc. (I know cos I live there
)
just to let everyone know I signed up with newsbin and usehostings. It is excellent fast uninteruppted downloads for really cheap. cant go wrong.
giganews
i started with my isp-provided giganews account through comcast, which only had a 2 gig limit for the month, but who could complain it's free. after a few hours i d/led almost my whole months worth, then i decided to get upgraded.
only good things to say about giganews from me, but i havent tried any others, no reason for me yet any how. i havent even compared prices, i do giganews-unlimmy for 25$/month, but i hear newshosting is cheaper, might be worth a LQQK!
if Newsbin.giganews = true then Digital.Gangsta.Visible = True
end if
If you can afford it stick with giganews, they are the best!
newshosting can be a bit slow sometimes (was down to 150k/s yesterday for me) and occasionaly hiccups for an hour or so a month. It depends on YOUR connection speed really, if you have a 3MB or greater connection I would stay with giganews.
I've found usenetserver to be an excellent and very cheap company for my Usenet needs. At $14.95 a month, I've yet to find a cheaper provider (And if you pay quarterly, it's even cheaper...). Anyway, that along with GrabIt (my client of choice), you really can't go wrong IMO. Hope that helps...
P.S. I know Verizon DSL provides usenet access (at least for business customers...not sure about any limitations or anything since I stick with usenetserver--it has significantly more groups and such)

not heard of that problem with grabit and i only use it when newsleecher craps out. Then the only problem i have had with grabit was the crash when you download too many headers.
as for usenetserver they are also extending the retention to 40 + days but the last time i was with them earlier this year they were awful with bad completion and bad retention. hope things have changed for the better like they say
question for all you newsbin pro users: is there anyway to search the entire usenet for specific titles instead of clicking on each one and downloading the entire section?
erm, try newzbin, that's what they do, pay up as a member and you can "file search" the whole of usenet, why would you want to waste time pulling headers?
http://www.newsgroupservers.net/#NNTPes heres a listing from anchordudes or carriers and thier strengths

I paid for newbin..how do i exactly search the entire usenet without selecting each group?
newsbin as in the software? or newzbin as in the website?
if its the software, there should be a search function....

my isp offers newservers at no extra cost(lots of isp's do)..i get around 10mbits/down and sometimes up to 15mbits/down..the retention pretty much sucks though..but,it is free,so i can't complain..so anyone who likes using newsgroups, should first check with thier provider..even if you buy service with giganews(or whatever),you can still add on your isp's newsserver..

newsgroups is awesome
easynews
I'm quite fond of easynews.com.
At least 30 day retention (I believe it's 40). $9.99 for 20GB a month. You can get another 512MB a week for free by taking the customer service survey and additional opportunities to earn gigs by giving away CPU usage. A GREAT web based global search and all of your Gigs roll over every month.

"What...me worry?"
I am thinking about using easynews instead of newshostings
Im sick and tired of waiting a few days after the release is posted to vcd quality to get the releases its too damn slow.
Can I still use newsbin pro with easynews?
not getting your bootlegs fast enough, huh? the specific server you use isnt the problem, junior.

has anyone else had problems with the usenets lately..its more than a week and no new releases its just weird to me.
how the hell is no new releases on usenet a problem? there has been lots of new stuff on that i can see. !
the binary I usually get the releases is not updated lately..I was just wondering. I use newshostings
Newshosting is one of the top paid providers so I know they carry all the relevant groups. You're probably just not looking in the right places cuz I see the new releases all the time.
