It looks good to me, I plan on going to the cinema to see it... Don't wanna watch something that relies so much on SFX on a shitty copy at home.

This movie just looks bad, lol.

loved all the originals as well, and of course this is not going to compare to them. But it does look god imo and come on, star trek with (good) Special Effects??? the only way that can be bad is if George Lucas directs it.

Bet you the price of admission I go.

Para/Salad doesn't seem to know that I have seen EVERY Star Trek picture since the first one in the theatre. Even went to a Star Trek Marathon back in 1996 with First Contact being shown at Midnight (theatre release date) Ex-wife is actually a Trekker (not Trekkie you fucks!) like myself.

Ok. "IF" you do let me know. I'll go.

I may start geekin for this a bit, The early reviews are looking rather promising.

^ You should try "geekin" for it a bit... It looks good, is directed by JJ Abrams (if you like his stuff) and is receiving really good reviews - more to the point, it can't possibly suck as bad as any Trek movie released in the last 15 years!

After watching the clips on Rotten Tomato I've got a hardon even Neversoft would be proud of!

Notice Simon Pegg has a small part . Zachary Quinto seems to pull off a decent Spock, and Zoe Saldana is damn fine looking as Uhura yum!

Warning... A few, minor spoilers here

Just came back from watching this and, for the most part, I thought it was fantastic. I do have a few quibbles, but they are very minor and in no way ruined my enjoyment of the film.

Firstly, It seems JJ has been taking tips from Michael Bay in how to shoot fight scenes that seem to blur to the point you can't figure out what is going on. Kirk's bar brawl was a prime example.

The score was average at best, dull and uninspiring at worst, although I did get goosebumps during the final moments but that was probably more to do with Spock's narration

Simon Peggs accent is atrocious, truly horrendous, and possibly borderline racist . In certain scenes he seemed to dip in and out of the accent on every other word.

Lastly, and probably my biggest problem,
I don't understand why Kirk was promoted to Captain so quickly at the end. Sure, he saved the day but is that any reason to promote him from a suspended ensign to the captain of the flagship? Wouldn't it have been better to have promoted him to lieutenant commander, then in the sequel have him as commander and keeping Pike on as Captain?
Overall though, I thought it was great.

dammm i shouldnt have read that

Posted by Crump on 05-08-2009 01:12 PM:

Yeah I agree with your points. I also found the score to be a little on the quiet side, like it didn't want to stand out.

A thing that bugged me, the lighting, it kept shining into the camera, hard to explain..

One question: How many explosions were there?

This is a serious question. I am polling Abrams/Bay movies to find out just how much shit goes kaboom.

Posted by Crump on 05-09-2009 01:29 AM:

Well its an action film set in space with big future guns (technical term) so there is gonna be quite a few...

Posted by HoldDaSalad on 05-11-2009 03:18 AM:

Spoilers

I went to the theater to see this yesterday and then watched the TS that's out with my family today.

It seems as if they are totally disregarding the original series and the movies with this alternate reality. So it's not really a prequal.

I really enjoyed it the first time, I enjoyed it quite a bit more the second time. I was kind of confused as to what direction they were going in with this. I had it in my mind it's a prequal.

As for Scotties accent I thought it was funny. All the characters reminded me of the original cast so that's a plus.

Minor Spoiler (you've been warned):

While I actually enjoyed this film, and it is probably my favorite of any Star Trek movie (the others just really aren't my thing although I've seen a good chunk of them)....

Can I please have a decent star trek movie WITHOUT a time travel plot/paradox of some kind? Please? Maybe?

/rant

despite my bitching at that minor thing, enjoyed the cast, thought the film was overall a good watch and I can't wait till it comes out and next view it at home in full hd to really enjoy the explosions again.

speaking of which, the technical answer for your question bakkoda is: quite a bit.

Agreed, why do they fell the need to do it?

Film of the year for me so far + a great cast.

Saw it yesterday and can't say I was that aroused by it. It was ok but nothing epic or even anything that could make it memorable to be honest. It was a so-so sci-fi movie with a meandering plot that makes little sense and good special effects.

I can't tell if the movie was aimed at die-hard fans or people new to the franchise but I'm neither, I like Star Trek but couldn't give a shit about it if ya know what I mean and this movie left me feeling pretty underwhelmed. Also, with the exception of the bits relating to how the crew got together, the plot is as generic and "Star Trek" as every other Star Trek movie.

In summary... Nice SFX, decent cast but at the end of the day just another Star Trek movie and NOT the "re-envisioning" that people had hoped for.

Never knew Spock was into niggers, i'm not a Star Trek fan so it could have passed me by but I never knew he had given Uhura some Vulcan loving.

I don't believe that was ever in the shows. I could be wrong, I like Star Trek but not into it like others.

That Zoe chick who playe Uhura is smoking hot though, Anyone see Guess Who?

Did you not realize how badly that source is cropped (especially having just seen it)?

Lol.

You cheated your family of about 50% of the movie!

I am not a Trekkie but i watched that Justin Lee Collins thing the other day you know "the bring back star trek"
Anyway it was said on the show that Uhura's first kiss was meant to be with Spock but Kirk stole that as he was such a controlling cunt on the show.
It was supposedly the first mix race kiss on screen.

Saw it at the IMAX on Friday. Loved it. Great blend of action and humour with excellent pacing and no dull moments. Even the 'back story' defining the characters doesn't detract from the movie (as they so often do). Gonna go see it again so I can catch what went on in the 4 corners that I didn't have the neck-turning ability to catch on the (very!) big screen.

Good to know... I'll be dragging the missus to watch it next Tuesday. Everything I've seen so far tells me it should be a good flick apart from the casting of Simon Pegg as Scotty but I look forward to being pleasantly surprised.

Peggs Scottish accent is atrocious. I like Pegg but he's not Scottish, I know he's not Scottish, everyone knows he's not Scottish so why the fuck make him talk Scottish. As bad casting goes, it's right up there with casting Don Cheadle as a Cockney in Ocean's 11.

Scotty should have been Ewen Bremner or even Ewen Mcgregor.

Apart from that, I really enjoyed the movie. Despite the reviews, I wasn't expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be seriously fucking awesome. John Cho was great as Sulu, the scene with him and Kirk on the sky drill thingy was particularly cool.

Yeah, you're both right about Pegg's accent, it is very poor! Funnily enough last week I saw 'Death at a Funeral' where Ewen Bremnar(? I think that's his name), Spud from Trainspotting, plays an Oxbridge-type Englishman...needless to say how poor that accent was.

If there were two actors whose roles shoulda been swapped...I think Spud would've carried off the blundering genius, that Scotty is portrayed as, quite well (and Pegg does the middle-class lovelorn character that is required for DaaF...in just about every role he plays!).

Well I couldn't decide whether to go and see Drag Me To Hell or this today, so I chose to see this at the local Imax. Not a bad film, not the best film I've ever seen - but worth the entrance price and a good way to pop my Imax cherry.

That said WHAT IS WITH ALL THE FUCKING LENS FLARE. FOR FUCKS SAKE.

Sorry, had to get that out.

I thought this was a really good movie. Have seen it a few times and watched it with friends that were not even fans of Star Trek and they said they enjoyed it very much. I even think the "Fanboys" might like it >

Very cool twist and remake of the 1st Generation's characters and a great story.

I eventually caught it last week and really enjoyed it. No chance of it happening but it'd be great to get JJ launching a series on the back of the film with the same cast (with the exception of Simon Pegg).
