Review: The Banger Sisters (2002)
The Banger Sisters (2002) Review by Prince Paul.
Many of you have seen movies like Private Benjamin, Overboard, Bird On A Wire etc, so you'll prolly know what's coming next. Yes, yet another Goldie Hawn comdey engine rolls in to Hollywood, can she be anything other than typecast? Alas no as we see her in yet another 'rites of passage/lifelong friendship' movie.
Suzette (Hawn) is on a low ebb, having lost her job she's now broke with no clear future ahead of her. In a weird twist of fate it is brought about that she decides to up and leave her home to travel to Phoenix to surprise a long lost friend.
Suzette was a groupie, along with her best friend Lavinia (Susan Sarandon). The pair of them 'made their way' through many rockstars and led the life until they parted their seperate ways 20 years ago. On the way to Phoenix, Suzette stops for gas and ends up picking up a writer named Harry (Geoffrey Rush).
This is the story of Lavinia, Harry and Suzette and how Suzette's outgoing personality and nature brings out the inner persona's of Harry and Lavinia.
The Banger Sister's is nothing more than fun. It is nothing more than that, yet it doesn't try to be. It's well directed, well scripted and well acted. All these plus points, but no downers? No, this movie has it's downers. It lacks substance, it lacks a really meaty story. By the closing credits you feel as though you've missed something.
Everything is rushed through so quickly with no scope for extensive detail. I wanted to see more expansion on the changes at home made by Suzettes influence. This movie was over far too quickly. Such a shame because it had the strength to add at least another 20 or so minutes to it's running time. Saying that though, it's not all that bad. The Banger Sisters is a fun movie, and many releases lately have lacked that fun factor so this makes a refreshing change. I for one was quite happy to sit down and watch this, aside from the odd scrapes i have already mentioned.
Having seen many of Goldie Hawn's previous 'comedy' movies, and having read the plot outline for this, i kind of had a feeling i knew what to expect. In a way i was right, but i was also pleasantly suprised. The Banger Sisters isn't a bad movie, it's just not a great one.
Final Score: 7/10 ''I am the handjob queen!''
