DVD to Divix or Xvid

when i download some of these movies over the internet that are xvid or divix they have a small file size but the quality is pretty good. i just wonder how can you make a small divix or xvid file without losing a lot of the quality. ive been trying to google this but havent found anything yet.

You're, actually, loosing quite a bit of quality in the DVD -> *vi* conversion... it's just nothin' that you can really tell, unless you're trying to.. check the bit rates on releases of the same movie, from the same source, but in the different formats.. you'll see the difference.

If you're looking for simplicity when converting from DVD -> to XviD, I'd recommend you use AutoGK- a variation of Gordian Knot.. it's quite handy and useful.

Sorry to disagree but bitrate's aren't always an acurate indication of quality. Especially if you're somparing the bitrate of MPEG2 with that of MPEG4.
And now that we've got H.264 AVC coming in, bitrates are going to go down even more.

If you want to TRANSFER your existing DVD movies, into "smaller" high quality .avi, .xvid or .divx files--use AutoGordianKnot (it is easier to use):

..they will tell you what "free" tools you need and these pages will guide you through the "ripping"(taking from DVD) and "encoding"(convert to format) steps really simple(cartoon format)--without talking too you like you have a degree in Technology~!
