toshiba laptop totally screwed....any chance of revival?

ive got a toshiba satellite 5200 902 (the one without inbuilt wifi) and basically its started going from worse to monumentally fucked. Of late the DVD multidrive doesnt work (so installing anything off cd i imagine is out of the question - like a fresh install of windows for example), and now more and more is going wrong.
Id say it wasnt too full of crap, as had a fully registered norton internet security up until about a month ago, which seemed to work pretty well, and it still working now, but obviously not with up-to-date definitions.
basically windows has become so fucking unstable it wont remain on and working for 5 hours without windows freezing. the fuck is i cant install SP2 because NOTHING works afterwards (no mouse, no sound, no USB) fortunately the keyboard worked so i got rid of it. now windows will literally totally freeze. it was the savoir of my VERY old desktop which died every 5 seconds with 98 and never had a problem with xp.
the thing is, its a reasonable machine, and the screen is big and bright, the sound is awesome and i dont have enough money to replace it...

any ideas to get drivers working with sp2 if that will save it..i.e driver solutions? how to install xp again (not from cd?) (it has hard drive partitions so if i can somehow get a copy onto my harddrive then i can do it that way)

any help would be awesome as would be a bugger to lose this computer.
cheers

I'm too drunk to read the entire thing but i did see the words 'Norton Internet something'.

Whatever you're talking about, that's probably the problem.
