must get dvd player

there should be a thread of be on best item for your value. you guys were right philips 642 is the best thing ive bought in a while so great omg wonderful. Although i wish they had made the player a little smaller and not as high also i wish the remote had the ability to open the tray and with they made the controler a little more beautiful. i thought i had to reincode my vids in divx, but so many are in mpeg4 or 2 so i just ned to pop them in and play

philips dvp642

I was reading up on this dvd player, It mentioned that it supports the +R's but no mention of dvd-R. Does it? I also read about audio drop outs. Anyone got info on those few questions?

I am need of a new dvd player and want one that can play divx, and xvid.

I have not had issues with audio dropouts.

And as far as your question about it playing DVD-R, it most definitly does.

That all I use!

I did have issues with DVD-RW, thought, I think. Damn I can't remember, I have 5 dvd players.

LOL,

I just got this dvd player today, The only problems I have found is divx or xvid burnt to dvd-r, The picture rezes out. But if you hit the menu button it fixes it on most movies.

Now I am watching my old howard the duck release by flair ages ago on my new dvd player.

Was it DVD to DVD or DiVX to DVD?

dvd+r, dvd-r ripped from a single layer dvd such as multipicity. and even purchased dvds. Bram Stokers Dracula, and also The good son which are both purchased.

The svcd dvd's, vcd dvds. The only one that didn't fuck up was the divx on cd-r which i played five minutes of it.

My girlfriend noticed that it was hot, and it was VERY hot. I just put my fan on it to see if that helps. I had my cable box on top of it. I don't know if that can cause a problem though, It shouldn't. it's made to have a device on top of it.

Everything fucked up exept for the divx on cdr

Well I moved my cable box, and turned my fan on facing the dvd player and it's playing my svcd dvd great now. I just wonder if the player heats up that much or if it was caused from the cable box. It can't get that hot where it fucks up every movie just from playing them. it has to be the cable box, since it's very thin. I don't know, will post later.

philips kick ass, i have the DVP-642, and everything ive ever played on it was great, no complaints, and para i havent had any heat problems at all, and i dont stack shit on it, i heard if u stack stuff on any kind of disc reader it will cause interference and will screw up the thing underneath it

Posted by HoldDaSalad on 02-11-2005 10:28 PM:

I have a philips stereo, had it for about 4 or 5 years and it's been great, and is still great.

Just return it and get the same shit. I have none of the problems you are describing.

And please remember, don't put any shit on top or underneath the player. I fucked up an APEX player doing that shit.

Neversoft, maybe one day I'll have to fist myself for saying this, but I *trust* this DVD player. It's been very good to me....

Just don't ask me if I'd buy anything else Philips. I don't think I would....

Posted by HoldDaSalad on 02-14-2005 06:03 AM:

Yeah this dvd player is going back, I can't watch a full movie on it without it fucking up. I borrowed a movie from a friend of mine today which the movie was BRAND NEW. Unopened and half way through it starts fucking up. So back to the store it fucking goes.

I had a problem with the 642, after 3 months when paying SVCD's the screen would roll. Worked fine with everything else though. Ended up exchanging it for the same thing and life is good. Other than that it's been great.

Picture rolling? Perhaps the format setting is on Multi instead of PAL or NTSC. I think it's an ID-ten-T error.

Neversoft, enough with the bashing.... You know you want one. Philip's will become your new God (or at least 2nd to your extreme fetishes).

I'm not bashing, I'm laughing my arse off while you guys blow money on a manufacturer of shit Seriously, there's a billion-and-one DVD player manufacturers and most of them are made from the same, standard, reliable, Chinese parts and they play everything, cost about 20 pence and work for a considerable amount of time. Wheras asnything made by Philips that has any moving parts has a tendency to break - it's been the same since the old VHS days.

Do a search for Philips DVD player problems, or if you really want a laugh, look-up the problems I (and thousands of other people) had with the Philips DVR880.

Bashing?... No, warning

Smile

My philips home entertainment system works fucking great, I have had it for at least 5 years, and not had one problem with it, I have philips cd-rs and they are the ONLY brand my car cd player plays flawlessly, much much better than purchased cd's.

I have only had one bad philips item, and that was the first dvd player I bought from them.

Posted by Lord_Nykon on 04-27-2005 08:28 PM:

Sup guys
I am buying this DVD player myself
The Philips DVP-642
This is what I have noticed for problems with it
None other than the laser.
I have read about 5 posts thus far on vcdhelp
This dvd player has only a 90 day warranty,
most of these guys got 5 months use out of it b4
the laser went on it. Then had to pay an additional $50
for a replacement because it was out of warranty.
Other than that, great DVD player for your movie needs.

Posted by carolinawolf on 05-09-2005 05:31 AM:

wow and i was afraid i had said Philips DVP 642 to many times and was going to be told i was spaming

Posted by snitzle_iii on 07-26-2005 12:53 AM:

im sure as new tech comes out that there will be better/similar dvd players, but i am very complasent with the player. its true that i had probems with return and exchange and bla bla bla, but everything has been running smooth. this is defnitly will be a fun toy when i go off to college. think about it youll be the movie man and impress teh ladies by actually watching the movie on a big screen tv. I think its funny when chicks always ask "why do we have to watch it on the computer"
