Considering that Xvid using a higher compression rate than MPEG-2 (SVCD), I'm sure that's why it looks crisper? Heh, right. Think about it guys. 2 CD's vs. 3 CD's. MPEG-2 is (retail) DVD format; Xvid is intended for Internet video distribution.

Conclusion:
Get the SVCD release for quality and the Xvid if you're in a rush.

::EDIT:: Everybody applaud the know-it-all who doesn't know fuck all about video compression \o/ Do some research before shooting yout mouth off next time! - Neversoft::

this isnt as sharp as the xvid.
svcd is for muppets who cant encode xvid, and to be honest im really suprised anyone bothers with svcd nowadays

anyway...... both releases are mighty fine....

9/8 great release ty maven peeps

By your reasoning a 6CD MPEG-1 encoded movie would be better than a 5CD xvid.

The reason MPEG-2 is the standard dvd format, is because most players lack the processing power to decode xvid.

Posted by Redemption1980 on 12-13-2005 08:03 PM:

Not as nice as the XviD obviously because of the lower resolution, and inferior Codec used, but still nice enough, albeit a bit on the large size, but even 2gb+ is nothing these days.

8/7/?

I agree that SVCD is past it really, theres loads of XviD players out there, and the most of the time the XviD version will look better, even if its less than half the size. though XviD does have problems with blacks at any bitrate

Posted by Clessy on 12-13-2005 08:58 PM:

Personally I always take the Xvid versions and then turn them into KVCD uses 900MB cds. That extra 200MB of room gives plenty of room for great quality.

I normally use a 33 to 5000 bitrate constant quality variable bitrate using acp.

Great post. Has no basis in fact or reality whatsoever, but I enjoyed it none the less.

(And yes, retail DVD does use MPEG-2, however at a max bitrate of 9800 kb/sec...compared to the 2600 kb/sec limit on SVCD.)

As for this release...

8 - black mark is still annoying
9 - no complaints here, nice and crisp
? - haven't seen yet

The Chronicles Of Narnia The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe *SVCD* - TELESYNC - maV

very nice release indeed maven, best ts ive sen in a long time good to see you giving ppl a choice between xvid and svcd hope that continues,i prefer svcd cause its easier and quicker to convert to dvdr but i can understand ppl who prefer xvid, undersized is a stupid nuke reason btw, now we have the quality how about some quantity theres a big lack of ts releases lately, underword evolution would be a nice xmas pressy .
vid 9 little bit grainy in dark scenes but thats no real biggie.
audio 9 clear and understandable no glitches,
movie 7 expected better with all the hype

Posted by NoNe23 on 12-14-2005 03:18 AM:

The Black EYe-Lash Or Watever it iz doesnt bother me but i prefer the XviD picture looks more sharper on the XviD and more bright/colourful but thanx for the nice effort maVen...i thought they were done with SVCD/VCD...Good To see them still putting them out though cuz its easier for me to put on DVD with just transcoding tha Audio to 48khz and just compiling it to VOB's and watever

But Based On Sample

Video-8 (Also Looks Kinda Dull Maybe Just me)

Audio-8 (same as XviD nice and clear)

Movie-7(just got XviD Instead)

Ummm.... not trying to flame here or anything but xvid is a far superior codec over MPEG-2 SVCD in terms of quality. Of course, it depends on how many passes you make and what codec you're using... but you're generally going to get better quality out of xvid.

As for this release- it's great. It's been a while since a TS was this good. Harry Potter was a disappointment for me.

props to maVen for both the xvid, and the laugh in your face svcd, I got the xvid for obvious reasons, but the fact that they released this as an svcd tells me that they just want to keep the poser groups from reencoding this. Thanks for doing it right and keeping the posers in check. They just got pwned

Posted by jonno35 on 12-14-2005 10:34 AM:

great release from maven. abit off topic but the best way to convert from xvid is "divx to dvd". its free and you dont have to mess around with sound ripping to get lip sync right. its just a one click method. movies usually get converted to around 2 gig depending on the length of the movie, and a 2 hour movie can converted in around 1 hour. theres also little or no quality loss. it all gets put into a video_ts folder so you just burn a new dvd film and drag and drop the ts folder!

Can someone please advise where to find the "divx to dvd" free conversion software, as mentioned in jonno35's post?

Posted by dangerrous on 12-14-2005 09:19 PM:

Okay, just a little help with the svcd/xvid/divx issue. These files in the SVCD format are done for the asian black market where it is up there with the digital versatile disc and sometimes preferred, you can read up on this on the net regarding the asian home entertainment market, as a trade off many of our dvd players are also able to play svcds, so it's not such a bad thing (burn the image and watch the film on your tv).
Xvid is an open source MPEG4 codec, MPEG4 was originally designed as a possible codec for dvd but was turned down in favour for the more stable mpeg2 (moving pictures expert group)but due to it's powerful compression rate it's use for the internet grew to what it is now.
We also have other codecs which are being developed that compress the data even more for the use in psp's and portable harddisk video units. Phillips is also developing a compression tool/codec as featured in the What video magazine.
Interesting thought, although turned down MPEG4 is now becoming common place on the new generation DVD players

Now to the film, I watched it on friday, then watched it at home on Sunday. To make a film of this quality in Two days with no sync problems is very impressive, full marks to MAVERN.

I agree this release is not as good as people are making it out to be. Mind you it is very nice, its not the best TS I've ever seen and I haven't seen that many. I think their Into the Blue TS was much better than this in both XViD and SVCD formats.

if your take source that has been compressed with a LOSEY codec (i.e. svcd or xvid) and RE-compress that into another LOSEY codec, (i.e. svcd->xvid, xvid->svcd) then that is BAD and only results in lower quality

Nice release.

A: 8 (had to adjust audio to mono, as stereo sound very distant and hollow)
V: 9 (Great movie, one of my favorites this year.)
