Started to go downhill IMO when they lost Red Dwarf and the crew were stuck on Starbug 1. I stopped watching after they replaced Rimmer with Kochanski.

But yes, the older episodes are cult classic sci-fi/brit comedy.

Picked up towards the end, thought the last series was good, with Rimmer back.

Looking forward to seeing this.

You're messing with a UK national treasure here Para, for your own sake I'd pick a different subject to troll cos you're not gonna win this one

I'm in agreement with the rest of you bastards... It was great until some daft fuck gave em a budget for the last few series and fucked it up. I don't hold out much hope on these news eps either

Posted by Darlowad on 01-28-2009 09:12 PM:

Yeah im guessing they will spoil it with authentic looking props, overly relevant gags and polished acting

Not intending to troll, I just think the show is that bad. I kept hearing great things about it and I was sorely disappointed with it.

Since I was so pissed about it, I feel I must share my thoughts on it. There are other BBC shows that I really do/did enjoy.

It's tantamount to dissing Monty Python, Fawlty Towers or Blackadder over in Blighty. I can see why you don't like it though, I'd say it's Brit humour but without the Brit eccentricities that the other shows have which you Yanks seem to like

Posted by David Cameron on 01-29-2009 07:37 PM:

The Brittas Empire must be more Para's cup of Tea.

Red Dwarf is second only to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy when it comes to sci-fi comedy. Its probably the last sit-com with canned laughter that I remember enjoying.

Para. Punishment for you is 2 hours W.O.O

Monty Python is great.

That's mostly the charm of it. Once they got something resembling a "proper" budget (about $89 by UK TV standards) they fucked the show up by concentrating too much on visually masturbating Red Dwarf fanboys and ignoring what made it good in the first place such as decent writing and genuinely funny slapstick moments.

No complaints, I agree that it has some charm to it. Heck I'm even surprised that got the go ahead to do this show based on these books, some of the funniest sci-fi comedy books I ever read (atleast 10 times each lol!)

I've got to dig them out again after I finish all 8 seasons.

So arsed to read back in this thread, are they doing a ninth season? Or are there more than 9?

Sure about what? I'm sure Red Dwarf went downhill during the last couple of series, I'm sure the new episode(s?) will be inferior to the old ones, I'm sure that most non-Brits wont like the humour and I'm sure that you're mentally handicapped... Beyond that, I don't know much about fuck all.

Posted by ntscuser on 02-07-2009 05:34 PM:

The series peaked at the end of season 4/beginning of Season 5 with the episode "Holoship". There was a noticable decline after that.

Holy shitt, Just staggered in, its about 2am. Somehow I remember this had been on tonight, seeing as I didn't pull tonight I'm going to attempt to masterbate through the entire 23 minutes and 6 seconds... then stop, hold my cum and continue to completion during part 2 tomorrow.

All three episodes are repeated on Monday night along with the "making of". That's for you lucky fuckers who can actually get Dave and don't have to download it like I do

I feel lucky when can do exactly that. Hopefully a decent rip will be available beginning of next week (all 3 episodes and making off)

Watched all 8 seasons last month and can honestly say I quite enjoyed them enough to burn em to disc so i can pull em out every year or so.

An MPEG2 version of the first new episode is available already but I'm not allowed to say where. Folder name is "RedDwarfToEarthPt1"
It's PAL so you're going to lose a bit of quality when converting to NTSC.

I kind of miss the laugh track and it wasn't on for long enough. I feel unsatisfied.

Posted by Crump on 04-11-2009 08:03 PM:

Im with you on that. Also, they didnt seem right. Hard to put my finger on it. Like they (or at least the writers) were doing bad impressions of the old characters...

Posted by ntscuser on 04-11-2009 11:41 PM:

I don't normally watch commercial channels so that "Dave Brand New" logo in the 4:3 safe area was a real distraction.

Posted by David Cameron on 04-12-2009 02:46 PM:

Part 2 was better, still pretty weird though.

For the American fans who don't know, the place they drove to at end of part 2 was Coronation Street. It's a street in a British Soap Opera called "Coronation Street ", thats the show that Craig Charles, the actor who plays Dave Lister has been working on for last few years.

Its bizarre, are they gonna turn up at Scrap Yard challenge to find Robert Llewellyn ? What about Chris Barrie and Danny John Jules, they've only done a few random bit parts here and there since Red Dwarf ended.

Posted by Crump on 04-13-2009 01:00 AM:

Wank. Glad I didnt stay in for it, god bless sky+

Watched pt 1 earlier today and I have to agree, no laugh track so it didn't feel right though I have to say they did a decent job considering it's been how many years since the last episode?

Gonna watch pt 2 and making of tomorrow.

I kind of enjoyed it after watching all 3 episodes, it was basically a rehash of an old story but it gives me hope of maybe a full season with some new adventures.

Maybe the "9th series" that they referred to in the past tense will eventually emerge, it would have to be as a prequel to this Easter special and we'd see kochanski leave and Kryten lie about her dying.

Posted by Neversoft on 04-17-2009 06:20 PM:

I didn't mind it, the episodes were quite well written and produced but I agree with some of you with regards to the laughter track... Nobody wants "canned" laughter but Red Dwarf and many other comedy shows are played to a live audience and recorded - the laughter was conspicuous by it's absence but I still enjoyed it.
