Review: The Pianist (2002)

Roman Polanski has made a few legendary films. And some films that just plain sucked.

This one i imagine is his opus. Its magnificent.

There is absolutley nothng wrong with this at all.

Its perfect.

As for the subject, its based on the book "Death of a City" by Wladyslaw Szpilman (a great pianist). The book was published in 1946, and it is a very fresh account of the Nazi attrocities in Warsaw.

The movie contains the most disturbing instances of nazi violence your ever likley to see on film. But more than that it draws you in to Szpilmans charachter as he's seeing this unfold. The movie starts from the begining of the Invasion and the horror just builds and builds. There is no attempt to moralize by Polanski, as there is no need to. You really dont feel anyone behind the camera, he just recounts the story.

The acting is masterful, even by the extras for christs sake. The characters who are on screen for 3 seconds are selling this concept in a way that amazes me.

You will be moved.

Speilberg probably beat his wife (Kate Capshaw) senseless when he got back from seeing this. He could never make a movie like this. He lacks respect for his audience. With good reason.

Jawdropping.

Groingrabbingly good.

There is this one scene involving a train that is possibly the best peice of film in history.

And when this film doesnt win the oscar for best picture, you will know that the oscar, like the golden globe and every other award we as americans bestow on anything, . . . is meaningless.

I recommend it.

This is a really really good movie and should have a really good shot at the oscar for best picture and there shouldn't even be a question of who should be getting the best actor award its Adrien Brody all the way hands down.

hah- kids want violence- get them sick of it at a young age, then they won't be looking for it when they're older- providing them with panzy-ass kangaroos and other shit like that just makes them want to beat the shit outta the homos that make it..... well maybe the kids dont, - but i sure as hell do!

yea about 5 friends and i... watched The Pianist yesterday.

ive been wanting to see this ever since i saw a small trailer for it... it looked excellent.

i agree... i think this movie is really a piece of art. there were points where i thought 'ok.. ok.. i fuckin KNOW about the holocaust..and i kNOW what the germans did.. i dont need to see this violence and absolute cruelty on film'... especially the scene when the men lie on their stomach and take a bullet to the head. whether or not people acted this way or not. i have a hard time believing someone would lay there as the other 9 men were short directly in the head. that was disturbing as was the germans driving their truck over a freshly killed family.

a couple of my friends said 'u know i dont know if i want to see this anymore. its too much'... and it certainly can be...

but the movie by far... redeems itself in the last 45min.. the scene w/ him playin the piano for the first time in years is a masterpiece in itself.

this can be a hard movie to watch but it is very worth ur while.

yeah this was a great movie.

But I did not like it as much as schlinders.
schlinders list had a powerfull narritative that connected the audience to the minds of all the characters good or bad.

the pianist is pretty much about the pianist from start to finish.
it is no where near the masterpiece. schlinders list is.
