Top 10 Movies of 2005

Well for the past 4 years I have posted what I feel to be the top 10 movies of my year...and over the past 4 years MANY MANY people have disagreed with my pics..maybe not all of them but a good amount...but as I stated in the past this is the top 10 movies that made me glad I took the 2-3 hours to watch them..they might not be the "critic" choices but they are mine. Now I wasnt going to do this this year but since I've seen a decline in quality posts in this forum I decided to do it so maybe we can get some dialogue going...well...without further ado...

****UPDATE****

1. Pirate of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Hands down the most fun I had at the movies all year...I evern went back to see it 5 times)

2. The Proposition (My pic for the Best Picture...too bad nobody elses)

3. Pans Labyrinth (Well since this movie is eligible for the Oscars THIS year I will make it my #3 movie of 2006)

4. Children of Men (Brilliant film from Alfonso Curaon which should be nominated for several Oscars)

5. Casino Royale (The best Bond movie EVER)

6. The Departed (The movie that WILL win the Oscar finally for good ole M.S)

7. V for Vendetta (Yes..this movie came out THIS year..and it was far better than X3!)

8. Invincible (A heartwarming story about my beloved Eagles!...how could it NOT make my top 10!)

9. Lucky Number Slevin (You know when I went to see this movie back in February at the Film Festival I loved it so much I thought it would be tough to knock it off the top spot...but look at it now..not so lucky)

10. The Fountain (A brilliant beautiful film that many people probably wouldnt like..but I did so it makes the list)

Honorable mentions:

The Good Shephard
Rocky Balboa
Superman Returns
MI:3
Stranger Than Fiction
Jackass Number 2
Little Miss Sunshine ( I didnt think it as great as everyone else in the world...can someone explain exactly WHY the Uncle Frank character mattered????)
The Descent (for you Uk'ers..I know this was 2005 but it was 2006 for us)
Thank You For Not Smoking
A Scanner Darkly
Crank
Miami Vice

I havent seen Apocolypto, Half Nelson, Eragon, Blood Diamond, The Illusionist or The Prestige yet and I've heard very good things about all expect Eragon so they might've possibly made my top 10...but since I wont see them until after the new year they have to be disqualified from my list...however they COULD make yours!

So...lets have it...

I'm with you for V is for Vendetta & Lucky Number Slevin.

Didn't have a chance to finish The Fountain........ but I must say this.... The Illusionist was badass. Norton does an excellent job for an overall good story. A must see.

Superman Returns I think was one of the worst movies ever made. I can't fucking stand this movie, I hated it when I saw it in the theatre, I thought maybe i wasn't in the mood to see it, So I decided to watch it again and downloaded it, and I gotta say it was even worse the second time.

X3 was Ok at best, It got decent reviews but not that good of a movie, I can watch it and enjoy it to some extent but I wouldn't recommend it.

Pirates was really good, That chick was super hot in it, Her facial expresions were fucking hot. I can't remember her name. Good movie.

Lucky number slevin was really good.

Hands down so far for best picture I gotta say is Blood Diamond. I that that movie was fantastic.

You sure you meant 05?

Ahh shit, I'm finding myself in partial agreement with 'slips.

1) Pan's Labyrinth
2) Children of Men
3) Crank
4) Clerks 2
5) Lucky Number Slevin
6) Monster House (being a horror and b-movie fan, and a big kid, this film made my day!)
7) Slither
8) ..I'm struggling now. Probably The Prestige.
9) Really struggling now, I can't think of any more.
10) Nope.

In fairness I haven't seen as many films as I'd like to this year. I've yet to watch Little Miss Sunshine which as I hear would likely be up there. In contrast to Petrocs I was pretty massively disappointed POTC2, and to back this up, my Mam agrees with me! She was a massive fan of the first one and watched it over and over.

X-Men 3 was also awful. "I'm the Juggernaut...Bitch!", the bitter killing off of Cyclops, the pussying out at the end regarding Charles's death, the plot, the direction, everything felt lacklustre.

I haven't seen the new Bond yet though and I'm just utterly shocked that V came out this year, it seems so long ago!

<soapbox>

Crank is without a doubt the best movie of 2006 for me. It had everything going for it.

It's a fucking disgrace that it will be overlooked by all the backslapping Miramax-loving awards fat cunts.

Crank had some of the most innovative editing and direction i've ever seen. And on a directorial debut too!!

It had a simple, over the top plot. Just what an action movie requires. Jason Statham was bang on form providing the right amounts of attitude, no dodgy accents and the correct look for the part.

It just had everything going for it. Besides Lucky Number Slevin it is the only movie i've seen this year that has literally kept me on the edge of my seat, juddering like Muhammed Ali after 20 bottles of Jolt.

Crank is head and shoulders above everything else made this year (that I personally have seen obviously). It pisses me off no end that a movie of this calibre will gain zero respect from chubby checker and the board of fat boys dumping potato bags filled with rolex, cristal, remy xv and the keys to an Airbus A380 in cerise leather to Rene, Brad, Angelina and all the other undeserving cunts this year.

Fucking dispicable.

CUNTS.

Shit yeah. Crank was great fun, amended my list accordingly.

Don't know what people saw in V for Vendetta or Children of Men, both annoyed the fuck out of me by pedalling liberal propaganda. Their plots and acting were overshadowed by a gay political agenda, suckkkekd.

1. The Host
2. Severance
[EDIT] 2-and-a-halfth. Blood Diamond - put it on just to check the quality of the DVDSCR...and it's 2h20mins later!
3. A Bittersweet Life (actually 05, but didn't make it across til 06)
4. Pirates of the Caribbean 2
5. Feast (05 again, but not released til 06...and still no release outside of the US...WHY?!?!?)
6 = The King and the Clown
6 = The Banquet
6 = Lucky Number Slevin
6 = 13 (tzameti)
6 = Hostel (YES! It was released in 2006)

I watch a LOT of movies - I don't watch TV, don't listen to radio much, haven't played my Xbox in over a year, Civ and Total War are the only PC games I play (and not in a long while)...so when I'm home I watch a movie or 2 a night....so it means I may well have forgotten some: I'll probably post again soon with an updated list as I see/hear things that remind me of other movies from this year.

The above are those that spring to mind as movies that I enjoyed and can see myself watching again. And it's a very subjective list in that although The Betrayed was a decent movie I can't see myself watching it again anytime soon and I far preferred the Infernal Affairs trilogy (which I would watch again).

Others that spring to mind (including the 'Requiem for a Dream' ones...meaning they're well worth watching, but probably not more than once every few years):

Who's Camus Anyway?
Find Me Guilty
The Lives of Others
The Betrayed
The Illusionist
Ils
Dog Bite Dog
Inside Man
Crank
The Beat That My Heart Skipped
Memories of Tomorrow
Pan's Labyrinth
The Fountain
Innocence (edit: apparently a 2004 movie...but it only started making waves at the start of this year afaik and I only saw it recently.)
The Promise

Lol, too late, watched it last night. Actually quite enjoyed it, don't mind political agendas if the story is based on fact.

Just not into the fantasy "if you vote right wing, THIS IS WHAT IT WILL BE LIKE" bollocks.

Have you considered that children of men really had nothing to do with the whole dystopian government (that was the ONLY government that had not completely collapsed in the story, probably thanks to hardline stances) but more about the whole no kids issue.

Also a terrific story and some fucking incredible long shots.

I just think you're reaching really hard to be offended by what's really just a vessel for a story and not propaganda.

Just the way I saw it, good story but would have been a better movie for me if it didn't have all the little digs at right wingism.

Excellent movie! Makes it straight in to the best of the year.

I even liked Leo in this one (and that's a rarity for me). Jennifer didn't get her tits out for the lads...and I still liked it! I've had the misfortune to travel through a warzone (in Sri Lanka) when a guerrilla attack took place and this was the first film I've seen since probably Salvador that captured the panic, mayhem and sheer terror accurately.

Best Supporting Actor award is signed, sealed and delivered: Djimon Hounsou - yes, I did have to look up his name - cannot be rivalled, his performance was superlative.

But there was hardly anything "right wing" about it, xenophobia and tough immigration laws is not exclusively "right wing"

Absolutely but they are associated with eachother by fuckwits who try to stigmatise the right.

It doesn't offend me, I just didn't like it.

CUNTS.

Crank was utter shit, on a par with the Taxi movies.

I can't even remember 10 movies this year, and still POTC2 doesn't even come close to being in my list.

Know what you mean, kind of snuck on me too, very good movie.

Not gonna amend my list again though coz I haven't watched Flags of our Fathers, Home of the Brave or Little Miss Sunshine yet. All are gonna be offered as selected viewing after Christmas Dinner(Borat is being forced upon my parents first - After the Queens Speech).

Forgive me if I don't take that as a definitive review. Afterall, you did like V for Vendetta. "Lol Beyond Belife" - Stephen Hawking.

Home of the Brave has been rated as "utter shite"

I agree 100% I really enjoyed the movie but it doesn't rank in the top 10 at all.

I finally watched Pan's Labrynth and I gotta say that might be the best movie I have seen this year. It was very different. It beat out Blood Diamond.

I am going to try and compose my list for the year as well as I can

1. Pan's Labrynth
2. Blood Diamond
3. Rocky Balboa, Very pleasent surprise
4. Children of Men
The rest won't be in order, I wouldn't personally put them in my top 10 but I haven't seen that many good movies this year

V for Vendetta

Silent Hill

Lucky number slevin

Lassie- Believe it or not it was actually really good, I was shocked to see it got really decent reviews and decided to check it out, I really enjoyed it. It wasn't like the sorry tv show.

A scanner Darkly

Clerks 2, for a comedy it was halarious. but it's a comedy.

babel

inside man

Pirates

departed

These movies I thought were really good but don't deserve a place in my favorits list, I guess it's the lack of good movies coming out this year. It's a fucking shame to.

I still have to see The Fountain, persuit of happiness which looks ok at best. I can't think of what else I have to watch.

Most of the movies I have seen this year were older movies.

It was very similar to the game, It was very dark and extremely creepy. As far as horror movies go, I think it was one of the creepiest movies I've seen for a long time. I just really enjoyed it.

Have to agree. I liked the parallels it drew with the game (camera angles etc.) That said, Sean Bean stunk the place out.

I thought it was just moody shit as well. I'd go so far as to say I preferred Doom, at least that made me laugh a few times, SH was just predictable and boring.

Honestly your the reason Hollywood makes shitty movies, because the average stupid american will go see anything, Thanks for fueling Hollywood.

Watch Pan's Labrynth if you don't like that there is something wrong with you.

I live in the US so this is stuff that came out here in 2006 (besides The Host).

1. Dead Man's Shoes
2. Pan's Labyrinth
3. The Host
4. Lunacy
5. The Proposition
6. Children of Men
7. Half Nelson
8. Funky Forest
9. Little Children
10. Mutual Appreciation

Posted by HoldDaSalad on 01-13-2007 07:27 AM:

I've heard that Apocalypto is gory, It was just the hype, It wasn't. It was a very good story, I will say this though it was a bit tough to watch because it was VERY brutal.

I would say it's in my top 10 for sure,

So far I can honestly say

1. Pan's Labrynth - This movie isn't being knocked from #1. This movie was pure fucking great.

2. Blood Diamond - Very emotional, Set the mood of the movie very early, Kept me on the edge of my seat. Very well played.

3. Apocalypto - read above

4. Children of Men - I have now seen it twice, The long shot during the battle at the end.... ONE fucking word for that "Amazing" I need to see it a third time.

5. Rocky Balboa - I was very surprised with this movie, I really enjoyed it, The main story wasn't about the fight in the ring, it was about Rocky's struggle, and it was layed out nicely, it was a great story.

I don't know if I can make a suggestion for anymore in my top 10, So I would say my top 5

REVISED.

Not a bad list, But I do disagree. Also is this in order?

I have to revise my list, I have one more movie to see this year, Well 2006
After reading your list I have to see The Illusionist, Little miss sunshine, The
prestige, Maybe Volver. and I can't forget The Fountain

1. Letters from Iwo Jima: Very realistic film, There was more war in it than I thought there would have been, One of the best movies in the past few years.

2. Pan's Labyrinth: Another War movie, Well War/Fantasy, Was the fairytale real or not, That is the question, There are some rather good debates on both side.

3. Blood Diamond:I wanted to see this the first time I saw a trailer for it, Looked fantastic. I loved this movie, Was my #1 until I saw the new top 2. lol.

4. Children of men: for the fact the movie was realeased a month or two before it's release, I thought it would be shit. and this was one of the better movies this year.

5. apocalypto: I saw the trailer and wanted to see the film, Not gory, but VERY brutal. I ecpected a good movie, and I thought it was rather good.

6. Rocky Balboa: Does it belong in the top 10? Maybe not, But the reason It's in my top 10 is because it was a very pleasent surprise. I thought it would be ok at best if that. and it far exceeded my expectations. and to me it deserves my listing in the top 10.

I don't think any other movie I have see this year so far deserves to be on the list.
