And i'm sure there's more i havent found out yet and itonly cost be £99

You can read more at VCDhelp.com

Mine plays everything i have tested so far VCD/XVCD(PAL AND NTSC) SVCD/XSVCD(PAL AND NTSC) MP3 (up to 320 VBR) CDR and CDRW(some cdrw brands play abit choppy, if u use a good cdrw brand it fine.) I have also tested DVD R and it works, not sure about dvdrw but it says its supported. I also have yet to test cvd, which im really curious to see if my dvd player supports it.

It also has
Component
Composite
S-Video
Opticial and
Coaxial output thingies and DD5.1, DTS, Prologic II etc.

I bought it last year, its a Hitachi DVP-415U, cost me $300 Canadian.

i had a pioneer dv-333 and it sucked ass. paid too much for it, it worked for a while, but then it just wouldnt play anything. got a mintek 1600, works great and its cheap. you can get it from the bestbuy website.

I have a Daewoo (Not sure on model #) Plays vcd/svcd/dvd-r/cdrw/mp3/karoke. No lagging and also works with cheap media

Posted by alundrety on 01-31-2003 11:54 PM:

well my pick is the APEX AD-5131(3 disc)
which is what i own and is my baby
and the picture quality is PERFECT and plays what you say you want to play, though not sure on all DVD-R compatiable, only tried some imation DVD+R

but you can WAY more top of line in hardware quality (meaning, the apex models do break easy if you dont watch out)

my pick is, becasue i browse and see comments about it, is the Samsung C621(5 disc i think)

anything 3 disc or more is ALOT better for no-hassle benifets

but you know what

try looking at vcdhelp.com IN THE STORE(CC for ex) then browse what they have on thier web, go by ratings and features

shopping around is better then going by what we say

and CC and Walmart(states wise) have awsome return policy

I picked up a cyberhome and had some problems with vcd. 70% would go out of sync. SVCD would play fine tho and it seems hit and miss whether you get one that does play in sync and one that doesn't.

Since then i've bought 4 more dvd players. At the moment i use my Phillips DVDR 890 which plays everything i throw at it. Be warned tho.. Its a tad expensive due to it being a Standalone DVD+R/RW Recorder. You can pick em up for about £450 (UK)

even though not all of these are listed on the box, it plays them all

VCD
SVCD
X/SVCD (some, depends on bitrate)
CD-R
CD-RW
DVD (of course)
DVD-R
DVD-RW
Mpeg1/2 Files burned as ISO
CBR MP3
Kodak Picture CDs

it's not progressive scan but, hey, $50 for a very versatile player!!

i'm sure its been metioned, but there is a pissant acer (i'm not sure of the model number, i'll check when i get back home) that plays SVCDs, but lags on VCDs that you have to burn as a data cd, but you can have JPEG slideshows (porn) and other things like that, i think it can play .avi files as well if burned in data mode... i picked it up for like $50, dropped it a couple times, and slashed the box, final price $30 at walmart, you'll know this pissant dvd player because it has no front controls and you HAVE to use the remote they give you...but for $30, its a nice dvd player... i also have a french rilfe for sale...never fired and dropped only once

Poblem with mintek 1600 is it has no svcd playback it plays very choppy, plays for 5 seconds pause plays, but other than that vcd or otherwise its great

watever u do dont get panasonic they dont even play SVCDs

For anyone living in the UK i would recommend a

Pacific 1002 DVD Player

they play:

VCD
SVCD
X/SVCD
CD-R
CD-RW
DVD (of course)
DVD-R
DVD-RW
Mpeg1/2 burnt as data
MP3
JPG

and u can pick them up in Asda for a tasy £49.99 i have had mine for a while when they were £69.99 an even then i thought it was a bargain! Granted it isnt the best named player on the market, but for the money and what it plays its well worth it!

Go get one now

nice player, but price $419.99 here in the states! ill stick with my apex AD-5131...places everything...except dvdRW+

Posted by maricla on 05-20-2003 02:05 PM:

Can you guys give an update on some dvd players that are dirt cheap?

Posted by Carson on 05-21-2003 06:27 PM:

maricla, search over at http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers

The Digix DV-288 is a full-featured DVD player from Wal-Mart (black case). It runs $58 in the US and has played everything I've thrown at it
CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, MP3, Kodak.. anything except divx ofc. Its only drawback is that it does not have a "Power" button on the remote control.

The Norcent DP-300 is almost exactly like the Digix except that it is $48 at Wal-Mart, is silver in color, and has a "Standbye" button on the remote.

Both the Digix and the Norcent can play PAL svcd's without any problem. Due to the cheapness of these two players, about one in 7 will come out of the box dead. Simply return them back to the store they were purchased at and grab another.

Most Apex models, esp. 1100, 1110, 500, 1200, and others will play all formats. They sell in the US for between $50 - $100 usually. Also, many of the Apex models can have their firmware upgraded so take off Macrovision and make them region-free.

I hear lots of good things about the Mintek 1600. It's another that runs at $45 - $60 and is available at Circuit City.

As a general rule, stay away from the 'top quality' DVD players if you're looking for something that plays every format you can think of. Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Toshiba and others tend not to play many of the formats that we all love so much

Have a good day,

Carson

Posted by mr_ding on 05-21-2003 09:16 PM:

Does any of those DVD Player supports disabling macrovision as well?

I'm using a Daewoo DVG-3000N and it plays DVD/VCD/SVCD/CD/MP3 with multiregion and it can disable macrovision.

Thinking of buying one (in Canada) for my mom for Christmas.

Posted by Carson on 05-22-2003 06:22 AM:

mr_ding,

several Apex models will disable macrovision and be region free out of the box, however those are generally all older models.

I believe the Mintek and Norcent models both are able to be made Macrovison-free (however, manufacture date, colored stickers and other things can tell you exactly which version of the model you have)...

the best resource I've found determining the status of apex/norcent/mintek/digix/daewoo/etc. cheap dvd players, and the ability to either set them region and macrovision free or to update firmware to make them so is at http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/ . I hope this helps.

Posted by maricla on 05-22-2003 08:54 AM:

Thanks for the reply. Ended up getting Norcent DP-300 for $50 at wallmart. Works great so far with my SVCD/VCD. Also was able to go Region free but not macrovision. So far I'm a happy customer.

Posted by Carson on 05-22-2003 07:20 PM:

we've got 2 Norcent DP-300's at the house. Returned one the day it was bought because we couldn't turn off spanish subtitles on any retail DVD.. but got another and it's been nothing short of great. I hope you enjoy the Norcent as much as I have (minus the bright orange loading screen and the lack of a power button on the remote.)

Another thing to mention that I forgot above is that the Digix DV-288 has a 'dinger' bell sound that goes off every time the tray is opened or closed and I don't believe it can be turned off... it gets very annoying.

Thanks,

Carson

Posted by Neo43224 on 05-23-2003 01:49 AM:

about the norcent dp300?

I see online that the norcent dp300 is only available online. So there isnt any in walmart stores???
Also does it play svcd? Reading what it supports it dont say svcd on it at www.walmart.com.

Anybody purchased it online? And if so does it support svcd. I was going to purchase it but after i read what it supported it dont say svcd.

Did they made an error online?

Posted by Carson on 05-23-2003 02:22 AM:

I have only seen two models of DVD players (and I can't recall which they were) that actually stated on the box that they are SVCD compatible.

Regarding the Norcent only being available online, it means that Walmart is no longer ordering new ones to be sent to stores.. so your local walmart will only have what it has on-hand and probably won't be receiving anymore. The store 5 blocks away from me has around 10 on the shelf and 20 more in back. (I work there while I'm struggling through college). Just because it says only available online, it does not mean that they aren't at your local store. Also, I can confirm that yes indeed it does play SVCD's. The Norcent even has a button for switching between PAL and NTSC titles on the remote... it's a great player for $48.

Posted by dopeuser8 on 05-24-2003 06:21 AM:

Norcent DP300 (Citizen JDVD3830 is a clone of it) are $79CDN at Walmart (Citizens are at SuperStore).
They play everything, and as of right now (May 23/03) its pretty easy to find the 'gold' version (as some people call em) of the Citizen, there might be some Norcent golds but youll be looking forever. So get the Citizen, then go to nerd-out.com, in the Norcent forums, and get the newest firmware (mdvd dolphin or offa fw). For one thing you dont need to look at that ugly orange Norcent screen any more. Anyways, the thing is macrovision free, region free, plays everything, you can turn off the unused DAC to make the thing run a bit cooler, hook a computer HD up to it....
Enuf of my rambling, go to the nerd-out forums for more info, and make sure you get the right serial # or you wont be able to upgrade the firmware or turn off the macrovision

Posted by vinnyv on 05-25-2003 07:07 PM:

The Norcent DP300.....is well worth the money. I have a Sony DVD player that plays everything but SVCD's. With the header trick on the SVCD's the sony plays them fine (Model 615, 5 tray). But some of the last SVCD's that have been released have not been able to play on my sony even with the header trick. I bought a Norcent from Amazon.com for 49.99 with a 10 buck mail in rebate. Couldnt beat it. Plays like a charm. I still like my sony for the over all quality picture that it shows, but the norcent for 50 bucks is the best money I spent . I use it for svcd's mostly. But I also heard from some people that it play MP3's on DVD format...which you know would be pretty cool. Really good dvd player for 50 bucks.....the only thing it didnt play was movies burned as data....but I didnt think it would. Love it.

Posted by slurmman on 05-27-2003 02:02 AM:

Toshiba SE-R0047 (about 70$ US)

This player is pretty good, but has a few bugs.

The audio goes slightly out of sync with the SVCD, so you have to press the 'angel' button on the remote, select second angle, then select first angel again, and it fixes it.

Also, if the SVCD gets choppy and skips, you gotta eject it, clean the bottom, then re-insert it. It's not that big of a hastle though.

The new Pioneer DV-260 is pretty neat. It plays just about everything you throw at it. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a descent DVD player for a good low price. Its on Walmart.com for 88 bucks. Get it while its hot...

DVD; DVD-R; DVD-RW; DVD+R; DVD+RW
CD; CD-R; CD-RW; VCD; SVCD; XVCD
MP3/WMA; Picture JPG/CD

It also has a graphical user interface, zoom, parental lock, progressive scan, and probably more I can't think of right now. I just got the player a few days ago and no problems so far. The quality on VCD's and SVCD's are awesome by the way.

norcent dp300 plays everything, even vcds/svcds burned as data, unlike vinnyv says, I think certain firmwares need svcd mpegs to be renamed .m2v, but it plays any mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 clip burned as data. this thing also plays mpeg1/2 video multiplexed with mp3 audio burned as data or a non-compliant vcd

Posted by Bigdrugbaron on 07-22-2003 02:03 PM:

For vcd/svcd i use a sharp dv-740 (reboxed sampo player). Plays most discs I throw at it, needs multiregioning out of the box but come on, u burn a txt file on a cdr and stick it in, even my mum could do that. For divx/xvid i use my trusty xbox.

If moneys no object u best off going for the kiss. It looks like a betamax but plays divx using hardware decoding, even xbox cant do that...

diversegenetics - bigpockets.co.uk were selling the kiss dp-450 pretty cheap last time i looked but beware, u have to take the thing in bits to update to latest firmware, not fun when u just bought it.
