Router Adapter.

I just purchased a Wireless Router Adapter, but cannot figure out how to get the damn thing to work. Call me stupid but sheesh. I might have it almost figured out, but idk...how do I obtain my/the Network Key?

What do you mean by adaptor? pc card for a laptop? usb wireless? PCI card? I'm not sure what you mean. But if I do understand what your asking.

1. Make sure Drivers are installed
2. See if it's in your device manager, if you have a wired nic make sure you disable that, and enable the wireless from the device manager.
3. if all else fails try the network wizard.

I mean a PCI card, my bad. Once I put in the PCI card and my computer said 'found new hardware' I followed the steps, or what have you. I then put in the installation cd and followed the directions, but it never came up with the final screen that the manual shows..but it 'did' install the PCI card. Eh, it's so confusing.

Ok, is it being listed in the device manager?

Try and ping the loopback to see if you get anything, 127.0.0.1 if you get 4 reply's it's good, and installed properly, But the main thing is, check the device manager make sure it's activated.

if you get a good reply from the loopback try and ping yahoo.com

reboot the pc.

If you had a previous nic installed on the pc, It's a possibility you may have to flush the ip, and renew it. I've had to do that a few times in my life.

This is the simplest of networking problems you can have.

Also since your using wireless, Since it's a pci card why not use Wired? It's faster and a steadier connection? I know there are reasons you can't use wired, I'm just curious.

I'd use wire, but I'm trying to keep the fact that I have a pci card thing from my parents. They're no longer down with the downloading. I could get a connection if I could only get a network key, but I'm not sure how to get one. And is there any way once it's up and running to get a full bar connection? I saw my cousins downloading speeds with his wireless router and they were shit.

I think you need to get it from whoever set up your wirless router, isnt it there to stop unauthrised access to the network?

you need to log in to your routers setup/admin page. This is normally done via entering its ip address into your net browser. Once you have done that, go to the security section and you should be able to find your network key (if you have one set).

Unfortunately, in my experience, the pc will need to be wired to the router to do this (unless you had the forsight to write the key down somewhere), which is a pain in the arse if the pc is upstairs and the router downstairs!

also, use the software that came with your wireless adapter, as the one windows uses is shit.

Posted by Jules_Tavernier on 01-22-2007 11:07 AM:

Also if you parents dont want you downloading, and dont know you have a wireless network card there going to find it a bit odd tha your asking them for the username and password for you to be able to log into the router.

Are you only able to pick up the router in your house, or are there other networks avalibe, if so have a look and see ifyou can connect tothem, i can pick up 5-10 different wireless networks from my house, only a couple of them are actually secure, all theothers I can connect to and downlaod using there BW instead of mine, also all the unsecure ones still have the defult username password for the router so if I ever need to change sdomething like port forwarding I can just log into there router and change itmyself.

From the sounds of what your saying the only way you are going to be able to get your wireless working is by getting your dad to set it up so you can use the router, which defeats the point of what your trying to do, which is not let him know what your doing :P

Thanks guys. You make a good point. But I installed the router cd on his computer and installed the adapter cd on mine...and all that fun stuff. I've seen people use other peoples connections, and when I went to connect, it had my dads computer name and somebody elses..but I still needed a Key.

Edit: I feel stupid but I put what I believe was my whole IP address/number whatever into the browser and it didn't come up. How many numbers should it be?

its not your IP addrsss, its the IP of the router, what router do you have that has the internet connection going into it ?

Your IP address should be four octets (e.g. 62.44.55.66) however you don't need to put your own IP address into the browser, you need to log onto the PC that actually has the wireless router connected to it and browse to the router's IP address (grr.. beaten ^^^).

Try running "ipconfig" from your dad's PC and have a look at his default gateway (often it'll be the same first three octets with a .1 or .254 on the end - e.g. 62.44.55.1). Once you browse succesfully to that IP address, you should get a username/password prompt. If he hasn't changed them, you should be able to search the web for the default username/password. Once in, you should be able to obtain the key and you will possibly need to add your MAC address to the filter list (if enabled). That can be obtained from your laptop by running "ipconfig /all" - it's labelled as your physical address.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the help. What router as in the brand/model? If so, I have a D-LINK Wireless G Router, DI-524.

Well, You would hope so.

My GF and I were driving through my parents neighborhood and there were a shit load of people who had unsecure networks, and some where but still had the default name. Hell even one had his actual home address as his router name. I think he though when it said address it meant his home address.

That's hilarious ^^^^! My dad knows nothing about computer really, so keeping it a 'secret' should be pretty easy. The router was originally my sisters, but she moved out, so now I'm claiming. My dad didn't even know what it was!

Did you get it working ??? can log into the other wireless routers you can detect and configure it to allow you a internet connection. If they have a different router you might need ot change the IP using to connect, also the defult username/pas might be different. soes it tell you what the router is when you see what wireless connections are avalible

Go to the router, take a paperclip and unbend it, insert end of paperclip into the reset hole and push the reset button, hold it for 1 minute, when the router quits flashing and all lights come on look for an unsecured network, connect, log in through your web browser to :192.168.0.1 (DLINKS default IP on most models) with the admin credentials given above.

set the configuration how you want it.

**Fixed**

No sir you do not
The router routes a local IP to every computer, There really is NO main pc. Just reset the router.

Hopefully you can log onto the router with your wireless nic. It will be set to default with no security.

It's possible wireless may be turned off by default, So you may have to use a wired nic to connect at first.

ALways gotta be a glory hound, eh?

On a Dlink, the wireless should be on by default (plug and play, blah blah). So there should not be any issue connecting to it. As for the PW, like Para said, it will be reset too. Use the defaults listed earlier to log in.

I feel dumb yet again for asking a question like this...but, does the chord going from my modem go into the WAN port on the back of my router, or does it plug into one of the other 4 ports!??

I did what you said, but didn't see an 'unsecured network', how would I get to that? I had the cord from the modem going into the router and the router cord going into the computer, and put the paperclip in...the lights were solid, but nothing came up on my screen. Think me trying to do this myself is a lost cause?!

Ok here is a guide, You should get the general idea.

This is for wired

this is for wirelss

These aren't the best pics i'm sure, but it gives the general idea, and it's pretty much universal.

It should be in there somewhere.

Have you been able to check the security settings in the router? If it's defaults, WEP is probably the encryption being used so look for that.

It looks like I'll be needing a firmware upgrade, or so the techincal support lady is wrong. For the first time today I was able to connect to the Internet after hooking up the router/modem. But then it stopped working. The D-Link lady told to click properties on my local area connection. I did that, she then had me double-click 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and from there I had to enter the D-Link IP, 192.168.0.1 as well as some other numbers...I have no idea what that did. Then she had me put 192.168.0.1 into my web browser (what seemed like 100 times) and see what came up. Once I got the D-Link page where I configure stuff, and she had me click on WAN. I forget what happened from there, haah. All I know is that it didn't work. So then I entered the number again (once my Internet would not connnect anymore) and the last time it said firmware upgrade, browse, etc, etc. Once I download the firware upgrade I should be up and running (?).

I don't know if I got you right, But did you put the router ip in the tcp/ip? In the nic configuration? If you did, No wonder why it isn't working, I hope I read that wrong.

Do you have dsl or cable? If you have dsl, if you have a static IP try and hard code the ip, dns, mask and gateway. That could work, I had to do that when I got dsl. I couldn't connect by using dhcp.

I was told by At&t that I don't have a static ip but my ip won't change. lol. I found that humerous, But I hard coded the ip's and everything and it worked.

You have to get the info from the router, plain and simple.

I have cable. I think that I'm losing my mind trying to figure this out.

Edit: The light on my PCI card is only on when I start my computer, what does this mean, if anything?

Edit #2: I put in the D-LINK IP address in my browser and a thing saying, name and password popped up. I think it said name?! Anyways I typed in, 'admin' and I got to the D-LINK configuration page. Now do I 'run wizard'? Or do I have to edit the WAN settings?

Make sure the WAN is set for HDCP, It should be default, to see if it works correctly make sure you are broadcasting wireless, and if you have the option for WEP, or WPA make sure you don't select either, and then after you apply changes go to view wireless networks and view avail wireless networks and you should see one called Dlink and it should be unsecured. if it's broadcasting and you can get access to the net, then secure it. If all else fails try another router.

Also if your doing all this shit in the router, on the computer and your not cycling the modem and router it won't work, Especially if your on cable. Just unplug the modem and router power cord and wait for about 10-20 seconds and plug them in.

If the light isn't blinking, That probably means it isn't broadcasting. Make sure you have it enabled in the device manager.

Seriously dude I don't get why your having such a problem with this, Well don't get into IT.

Actually I think you have it figured out and your fucking with me. Aren't ya?

Oh do an ipconig /all and post it. I want to see what you get.

Dude i'm a bout to shit myself silly if YOU'RE being serious?

I'm not trying to be mean, but I gotta ask

When any of us tell you to do anything on here, Do you understand what we mean? I know this can be tough, We have all had network issues where we wanna pull our hair out.

It's to the point where i'm starting to tell you to do the same things over and over again.

There is only a few things it can be at this point.

Here is a list of things to check, if you don't know how to do any of these ask.

1. cycle the modem and router
2. reset the router
3. make sure nic is enabled in device manager
4. do you have any firewall protection (Zone Alarm, Norton etc.)

by default these things are pretty much plug and play

No worries. I don't understand the following:

3. make sure nic is enabled in device manager

NIC? Network...?

Cycle the modem, and router means unplug the power from both for about 10-20 seconds and then plug them back in.

Device manager, Go to My computer, Right click in the white area and go to properties, and then click on hardware and then device manager, and find the network card, and make sure it's enabled.

Nic. the Network card. the wireless card you bought.

I have seen this numerous times, Norton is really bad for this, The firewall built in, I forget what versions can and will prevent you from surfing the internet. Just disable it to see if it works. Never know.

I had this call one time, This family bought a computer, and I did tech support for there isp, and they coudln't connect, They refused to disable norton, because they said that compaq knows more about this than I do, and they wouldn't have put it on the computer if it's faulty, They were really rude. That call stuck with me.
Guess what the problem was? you guess it, NORTON. Fucking Norton.

Norton is a bitch. I currently have Norton Systemworks Premier 2006 and it's given me nothing but problems! Ok, I went to the device manager and on Network adapters I clicked the + and up came Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster. I still don't get why the lights aren't on though, does it have to be working for them to be on (be connected with the router)?

Edit: If only they would have listened to you, I swear some people are sp stubborn.

Never used a Linksys nic, So I don't know but I would imagine it would have to be transmitting before the light would blink.

Right click on the device in device manager, MAKE sure it's enabled.
Did you completely disable norton? Or do you have any other firewall protection? I'm sure you don't, but I need to know.

If you keep getting disconnected your router may be getting interference from one of your neighbours... In the router config, change the channel the wireless broadcasts on. On some wireless cards, you will also need to change the channel on the PC that you're connecting from.
