Posted by David Cameron on 07-20-2008 11:40 PM:

The end is nigh

Its almost switch on time for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Its still being cooled down but will soon make its first attempt at finding the 'god particle'.

Question is, will it discover the Higgs Boson or will it kill us all ? From a purely scientific perspective, either outcome will teach us something new about particle physics. If we are dead, we won't get to build on those results, but hell, at least we'll know.

Posted by bartleby on 07-21-2008 12:34 AM:

Well over the last 2 weeks ive had 3 dreams that ive been fried by nuclear missles...

So im taking this as a sign of a coming catastrophe and saying we're going to be Killed.

It will not provide any major worthwhile scientific discoveries.

It will not kill anyone.

Nothing to see here.

Of course it's fucking safe... Every time a new particle accelerator goes online some cockhead thinks it will destroy the universe, IT WONT. There's more chance of my gas causing the end of the world.

What it will do of course is turn physics into an episode of Lost - by producing far more questions that it answers

Posted by Spank on 07-21-2008 03:28 PM:

thats the only probelm with science, for every question we answer....50 more questions pop up in its place!

im looking forward to seeing the results of this particle accelerator. can we create something out of nothing like religion would have us believe? i would like to find out!

The result may be more questions than answers. Hopefully it will be 5 more questions, a confirmation of Super Symmetry and almost a validation of string theory.

If this doesn't happen, its still a huge result because it'll stop string theorists wasting their talents on a dead end.

i have actually done contract work at fermilab, another particle accelerator ,quite interesting.

One day some whizzkid chemistry student will produce a cold fusion reactor in his back bedroom. His girlfriend dumps him so he gets depressed and decides to blow the whole planet up. The Earth becomes a dust cloud orbiting the Sun and the Moon flies-off to the outer reaches of the Solar System. No one will even know the human race ever existed.

there's some natural occurring forces in this universe on the scale of supernovas and alike
I doubt VERY much that us flea like beings can muster anything of any significance.

Sill, Saying that, i believe its only a matter of time before we start fucking about with the very nuts n bolts of it all.

ponder that scary thourt.

Thanks cupid, its good to be back.

I know it's not very scientific but I have faith (not in the religious sense) that the universe is far too well put together to allow one tiny spec of it to dick about with things that shouldn't be dicked with. When you look at how well the whole of physics "gels", I doubt the universe is fragile enough for us to break it... That's not to say we wont break ourselves though

And yes it is good to see AD back again (although he's been lurking)... Arthur, the changes we were on about the other day - watch this space

Posted by David Cameron on 07-23-2008 01:17 PM:

Theres not much chance of humans ending the universe but I don't think its beyond the realms of science fiction that man could destroy Earth, maybe even the Solar System.

They say this particle accelerator will accelerate the particles to so close to the speed of light that they would very likely produce mini black holes, these mini black holes will decay and disappear in an instant though, so no danger. There is no reason whatsoever for them to even attempt to create one that could sustain itself, but if they could, that would end the earth and anything in its vicinity pretty quickly, wouldn't affect the wider universe though.

Also heres what Nostradamus has to say about it...

Leave, leave Geneva every last one of you,
Saturn will be converted from gold to iron,

Before the coming the sky will show signs.

Nothing bad is going to happen. In reality, if it doesn't produce a Higgs boson, nothing is going to happen and it's back to the drawing board. Either way I'm pretty sure we're gonna see the standard model be superseded by something else fairly soon.

Do honey bees help pollinate trees? or grass?
I think wind and animal shit takes care of that part.

but your right, im sure theres a balance to it all

A quick google...

Honeybees don’t just make honey; they pollinate more than 90 of the tastiest flowering crops we have. Among them: apples, nuts, avocados, soybeans, asparagus, broccoli, celery, squash and cucumbers. And lots of the really sweet and tart stuff, too, including citrus fruit, peaches, kiwi, cherries, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, cantaloupe and other melons.

In fact, about one-third of the human diet comes from insect-pollinated plants, and the honeybee is responsible for 80 percent of that pollination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture

First particles are due to be fired round this thing in a couple of days but theres still another month to wait for the first collision data.

You wouldn't know this if you read about it in The Sun or any other tabloid though. Oh no, this is The Sun's recent offering(Click picture for full story.)

I've had to spend the weekend trying to explain to my less academic friends that the world is not about to end and that this experiment has been known about for about a decade, that the first collisions won't be made for another month and that their is little to no chance of the world ending.

"Have you heard about this machine thats going to end the world, I read about it in the The Sun?
"

"Oh yeah, the Large Hadron collider, its been on for about a couple of months now but it won't be making any collisions until October".

"No No , this is a different story, its just been in The Sun, it says it could end the world when its switched on in 9 days".

"Yeah, its the same story, they're just slow reporting it".

"No no, it can't be the same one, it was only in the paper a couple of days ago".

"ITS THE SAME FUCKING STORY YOU SPASTIC""

"Whats a Hadron?"

"Stop talking to me"
