I've got one myself and love it.

Now am I being an idiot here or is it not possible to forward received text messages or send picture messages?

Every other aspect I love but can't seem to work that out.

for mms download the free MMS app

As far as forwarding goes I don't think it's possible (yet .. It's coming) on a virginal unjailbroken handset

Future updates rumoured in the next firmware include
Data push for all apps
Copy and paste
And proper mms
Amongst other goodies

The vlc remote app is cool for 59p if you use vlc .
Remotely selet files from your hardrive
Setup playlists
Skip chapters
Adjust volume etc
All via your network from your iPhone

The only thing it can't do is fetch me a cold one from the fridge , the misses isn't too snazzy with technology he responds to a bell

Hmm...

I've also split this thread so you can carry on your iPhone discussions in an on-topic thread.

Ok cool then

Any other iphone geeks suggest some good apps ???

Speedtest is a good free app for determining network speed especially over 3g it's not always the phone being unresponsive it's just o2's shitty 3g coverage

The old iPhone and the newer one that came out last fall looked great. Nice features. Cool enough phone, but for texting it is garbage. I don't like the qwerty pad on screen like that.

Thanks but no thanks. If I want a touch screen Qwerty pad I'd go with the Storm, now that's a nice phone.

Since I'm a cheap bastard I'll stick with my Palm Centro, It does everything I need it to do, plus a whole lot more.

At least here in the States AT&T sucks ass, there network is complete garbage.

There seems to be a trend amongst non-business people to buy a BlackBerry at the moment. I'm going to start a trend to punch these people in the face.

Love the iPhone. I've never once forwarded a text (and people who do should be hurt), and MMS is pretty shitty so don't miss it. Hope they're included in firmware updates just so people shut up about them.

Best apps:
* Facebook (great implementation)
* Simplify Media
* Evernote (altho I don't use it enough, it's a great concept)
* eBay (recent update makes it proper better, really useful for keeping track of auctions)

Wish I had the 16gb but even if the next generation model is only basic upgrades (better battery, bigger drive, faster proc) I'll end up getting one regardless.

Back in the day Blackberry phones were just for business use. They are trying to push the blackberry's into mainstream use, look at the Storm. That phone is geared for everyone.

Texting on the iPhone is putrid. Theres a fucking learning curve to hit the buttons correctly. If you want to hit the "R" you gotta hit the "T" fuck that.

I like the Palm Centro, and yes the software is fucking outdated as fuck but it's simple just like the iPhone and I still prefer it. Texting is fantastic with this phone. If you're like me and can send over 5,000 texts per month then you need a phone that's capable of good text.

There are some things about the Centro that irritate the fuck out of me though, lol.

I would like to see the Centro with a newer OS, I hear that some of the newer Palms have Windows Mobile.

Evernote is one of the best concepts since sliced bread. I really need to use it more myself. The Facebook app is quite well done, and I do enjoy the WootWatch app.

The ATT network is superb IMO. I've travelled the country, including to Ohio last fall for my Bro's wedding, and had no issue at all with my old Razr. Been travelling with my recently acquired iPhone and have the same great coverage.

There coverage is about the same as Tmobile.

Sprint/Verizon have much better coverage.

Explain how that is bad please

I really don't have a problem texting on the iPhone as I've got fairly normal fingers.

A mate of mine who has fingers like jumbo pork sausages admittedly did struggle, so I can see where you are coming from.

The missing features of the iPhone (cut n paste, SMS forward, mms) are well documented.
It's my belief that anyone getting or got an iPhone
Are well aware of this.

Why are they missing? I REALY don't have a dam clue
But some how I've managed without them.

I've even come to terms with the extremely crap batt life.

How I use the iPhone means I can't see another phone out there that could take it's place right now.

Funny, on mine I just press R to text R. I used to have a QWERTY keyboard on my last HTC phones and I don't miss it much, altho I wouldn't type essays on the iPhone, but it's not designed for that. I find texting left handed is probably easier than two handed.

Ok, fair enough you're the 1/100000 people who use SMS forwarding for a useful reason rather than passing on utter shit that I don't want to read.

Get em to do the orders in email instead, problem solved.

Without boring the arse off you, in the industry I work in it is novel if some of my accounts have a mobile, let alone a computer.

If I asked them to put the order in email chances are I wouldnt get the order at all

I use my nails to type. I have great nails, lol.

My phone doesn't look this damn ugly, It has some apps on it to give it spunk.

there is a copy-paste solution of sorts available for the iphone called pastebud. it works 'through a clever combination of web services and bookmarklets' so no app or jailbreaking is needed to use it. its free, or pay depending on your privacy concerns.

A decent camera is all that's missing for me. I'm not a camera freak, but I like to take just (literally) a couple of pics on a night out or when I'm around and about.

2Mp was the best last I looked on the iphone. Pathetic!

I don't know, I was playing with my brothers iPhone and that was the one of the few things I was actually impressed with, most cameras are shit on mobiles but that seemed to take very clear and nice shots.

I never really understood the obsession with going to such high digital resolution when proper lenses are so much more important if you don't want your work to be billboard sized.

Posted by Neversoft on 02-21-2009 06:35 PM:

Not wanting to derail the thread but I've been very happy with my Sony C902. It's more "phone like" but has plenty of features, the camera is pretty good, it looks sexy (and isn't the size of an 80s Walkman) and there's assloads of software out for it, including the sextacular MyPhoneExplorer

The iPhone looks pretty snazzy but like the iPhone clones (like the Samsung ones) it's still fiddly when using that touchscreen for certain tasks and it lacks features that some mobiles have had for years.

Sprints coverage is questionable at best. Once you get away from the city or interstate, you might as well throw your phone out the window.

Verizon is quite decent.

And even in a large city I experienced so many dropped calls it was almost useless.

Not real thrilled with the phone selection from Verizon but the coverage is great.

I've not had any problems with coverage anywhere in this shit hole state, nor have I had problems in Indiana or Michigan. I had good coverage. So they have drastically improved there network since you've used them or your talking out of your ass, lol.

I have heard that they have gotten a lot better where they previously had problems such as Findlay Ohio. That's a Verizon area for the most part. Just in the past year or so is Sprint decent there.

How does this work, I'm sure some of you guys might know the answers. Sprint is using the 3G network, How do these other companies fare in comparison like Virgin Mobile or Boost mobile? I hear Boost uses the iDEN network which is part of Sprint. I have no idea of what the difference is. Anyone know?

My buddy has had Helio for a couple years and has had great service since day one, I know they piggyback off the sprint network but what network are they running on?

As a former nextel (boost if you go prepaid, same network) customer that has switched to sprints network with my last contract up I would have to make sure you *avoid the iden network at all costs*

I can only speak about the NY area but coverage is shitty, dropped calls randomly, very annoying 'tinging/clicking' in the background of calls (people who have been on the network knows what i'm talking about ... tssstt click click click click click zrrrrr tssst) and all the phones are shit, very very shit. The only fun part was that the phone was so uncaring about it's interference with nearby objects that we would all know before my phone would ring that i was getting a call if we were in a car or by a tv because any speaker within a 5 foot range of the phone goes TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK then the call comes through, it's very obnoxious.

I don't find that's the case, even with small weblinks. Maybe it's just that I've had 4 generations of touch screen phones now and I've become really used to them.

As for the camera, as long as it has a photo taking function, that's all I care about. I'd never use my mobile as a source for printing anything out from, I have a DSLR for that. 5+ megapixel cameras just mean shitty photos (due to shitty lenses) taking up lots of space on the device.

i saw this news a few days ago and said AT LAST !!!

Finally the phone will be what i want it to be.
sure the addition of cut n paste along with mms are LONG over dew.
but more importantly are the other more hidden features,
Companies like tom-tom and sling-player have had software ready for the iPhone but couldn't put them out dew to FW 2.xx

these and other bits of software can soon let loose on the iPhone with fw v3.

i hope they open up the bluetooth properly other than just for stereo bluetooth.

Hmm we will see! SO this itunes business, i've got more than 32gb of music, do i have to manually select (and deselect) songs to go on the phone?

Posted by Darlowad on 06-19-2009 07:32 PM:

NO NO the best thing to do is organise all your tunes in seperate folders , you then add individual folders to itunes

try and make sure all your songs are tagged corectly otherwise it gets very messy !!!

When adding a compliation album >right click >info> select part of a compliation for all songs otherwise itunes goes crazy and adds them all as seperate artists and albums!

You realise the Palm Pre you like so much was designed by ex-Apple designers, runs an OS originally developed by Apple and is from a company with an executive board full of ex-Apple execs?

As for syncing music to the iPhone, I just have a playlist called 'iPhone' on my iTunes and move things back and forth it, and have that synced. Works for me fine.

did mine all within the first 15 mins of release,
from download to reboot in 3.0

but must admit there was a sticky bit where the phone acted very strange dew to the sim being pin locked.

i suspect you could knock a few zeros off that number
just down to some people being generally thick.

Cheers Darlo and pHo, that makes sense to me now. So i'm going to delete everything from itunes and then only add stuff (to itunes) that I want on my phone, that sound about right?

I always said i'd never get an iphone/ipod because of all this but my phone contract had just expired so i thought i'd get one, the unlimited data comes in handy.

Posted by pHo on 06-19-2009 08:58 PM:

No, you don't need to delete anything from iTunes. Make a new playlist called iPhone, and drag a bunch of songs into it from your main library. Then when the phone is connected click the Music tab and tell it to sync to that playlist. Then everytime you sync it'll make sure the device is up to date with whatever is in the playlist. Means you can choose what goes on and off it when it's not even hooked up, which is useful.

You can sync more than 1 playlist if you want, I just use the one cos I have an 8gb 3G and I dedicate about 4gb to MP3, 2gb to podcasts and the rest to apps.

If you don't want to sync to a playlist, just click "Manually manage music and videos" on the summary tab.
