Thumbs up Review: Detroit Rock City (1999)

Detroit Rock City (1999) Review by Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

From the director of such movies as The Chase and umm, Psycho Cop Returns comes this 128 carat beauty of a movie. Detroit Rock City.

Edward Furlong headlines the cast in this hilarious teen comedy set in the 70's when rock band Kiss were the 'in' band of choice. The story centres around Jeremiah Bruce (Sam Huntington) and his outcast schoolpals and they're love for the band Kiss. It's the last day of the school year and Jeremiah and his pals are all geared up to travel to Detroit that night to see Kiss play. All would run smoothly if Jeremiah's highly religious mother (Lyn Shaye) didn't hold the belief that Kiss were "the devils music".

When Mrs.Bruce destroys the boys tickets they don't give up and decide to come up with a plan on getting to the concert. And so what follows is a rip-roaring laughter packed road trip following the boys to Detroit and the humilation they submit themselves to just to get the tickets.

The movie doesn't just centre around the concert though, it's also in the tone of a rights-of-passage movie in places. The movie benefits from a fantatstic plot and script and excellent directing from a pretty much unknown. I also love the camerawork which at times gives the movie an almost fly-on-the-wall feel. Very innovative indeed.

I could find little to fault in this movie except that Mrs.Bruce's character did begin to become overtly irritating towards the end of the movie and sometimes some of the jokes fell flat and didn't work. Other than these minor discrepancies, the movie is a real treat.

A pretty much unknown movie that deserved a lot more attention when it was originally released. If you haven't seen it already, go watch it. This movie is worth it's weight in gold and more.

Detroit Rock City, branded lovingly by me as 'The little movie that could'.

Final Score: 8/10 ''Just because she's a female gynecologist, that doesn't mean she's a lesbian. And even if she was, at least my mom didn't give birth to me while she was on LSD.''

I couldn't agree with you more. This film was cool.

You forgot to mention that Edward Furlong gets his end away with Shannon Tweed. Lucky wee bassa!

Movie was cool, but because of kooky title, didn't do well at box office.

Hmmmmmmmm

Okay, since the rest of you guys have lost your mind, allow me to give an opposing view.

This movie SUCKED. It was horrible....unwatchable....in fact, if I hadn't been drunk when I saw it, I wouldn't have watched it.

Everything in this movie was a bad cliche'. All the way to the ending when they all meet at the intersection at the same time and head off to the KISS concert. I was laughing, but not for the right reasons.

This movie killed Ed Furlong's carrier, and that may be the best thing about it.
