Cleaning DVD player lens: any thoughts?
My old DVD player is starting to develop playback faults/glitches, e.g.:
- Stuttering audio at the start of one SVCD
- One SVCD that played before now freezes after a few seconds playback
- New SVCDs burnt to Maxell CD-Rs go corrupt towards the end of the disc (but play fine on PC)
What's do you people think is the best way to clean?
Are these lens cleaner discs any use?
Or should I take it apart and give it some compressed air, or even a cotton bud and some cleaning fluid?
Hmm I wouldn't risk it myself, probable faulty equipment.
Hi,
I use the DVD disc laser cleaner, and the can of air. Works fine for me, your player is getting old. Might be a time to replace it.
some dvd players are internally fitted with pc dvd rom drives such as the cyberhome .and with slight modification are replacable in the case of the cyberhome there is a guide on the cyberhome.de site.depending on how much you paid for your dvd player and weither you can replace the rom drive.some times it is easier to buy a new unit as they are not that expensive depending on what features you require.
Re: Cleaning DVD player lens: any thoughts?
Don't use cleaning fluid on the lens you may destroy it.
Dust & dirt (if you smoke it's worse) accumulate on the lens over time & can cause the symptoms you described.
I've had good success with the cleaners made for CD's they have smallm brushes on the recorded side of the disc which 'gently' wipe away any dirt DON'T follow the instrustions and use the supplied liquid! .. Available from Hi-Fi, White Goods, Kmart, etc.
Good Luck

ive been having similar problems too, some svcd's are begining to skip frames, not bad, but u can tell the laser is having difficulty reading the cd. the image will pause on a frame for about half a second, then proceed on. i think im going to try some of these lense cleaners, any brand suggestions?
