Nintendo DS

How do you go about sticking downloaded ROMs on a cartridge to work on DS?

Just thought I'd bump this cos I got a DS Lite for my birthday yesterday (yay!) and I'm buying one of these flash doohickeys. What I need to know though is, what's the difference between the various "media adaptors" (linkers?) that are available, do they all work?

The reason I ask is, I have my eye on the Supercard Lite because it matches the NDS perfectly and its reasonably priced. Having said that, I've spotted much cheaper adapters and there's also one called the M3 which is twice the price but appears to support movie files and mp3 playback - So, would the M3 be recommended for those reasons or would I be just as well off getting the Supercard and a copy of Moonshell or similar for my MP3 playback?

Also, how easy is it to dump several roms to a flash card... Do these linker things support that or do I need to use one of those multi-boot tools to shove a menu on the front-end and patch the roms to work with it?

What memory capacities do the various adaptors support? Should I get one that uses SD cards instead of Mini (or Micro) SD?

So yeah... Whilst I've found titbits all over the Internet and could probably work this shit out, nobody seems to have done a comparison of the various adaptors, so if anybody has any insight, please post here

Also, I'm assuming I need a Passkey to trick the NDS into thinking that it has a normal cart running... Would a normal NDS cartridge work just as well or is the Passkey also used to store NDS game saves or bypass other stuff as well?

... There, not too demanding am I?

::EDIT:: Too late, I decided to grab a Supercard Lite with Max Media Launcher and a 1gb MicroSD card... If anybody comes along and tells me how shit it is, they'll be banned; where the fuck were you when I asked the question?

Not the "Supercard Lite with Max Media Launcher and a 1gb MicroSD card"!!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding I never got round to buying the DS. I borrowed my sons gameboy advance (for when I'm working away) and bought Metroid Zero Mission (which has restored my faith in games after several years of relative gaming wilderness)
Gameplay, that's what it's all about. I will be buying a Urine next.

Could you give a quick guide on how to do the ROMs to DS?
I've not really got the time to look into it in depth myself, what with my alcoholism and THC inhaling habits.

Posted by Neversoft on 08-25-2006 02:21 PM:

just to let you fuckers know, I got my Supercard Lite, MML and 1gb MicroSD on Monday (hence why I haven't posted as much this week ) Its fuckin' super!!

For starters, it makes any MP3 player look a bit cack due to the minty goodness that is Moonshell (or DSOrganize for that matter). It loads roms in about half a second (no kidding!) and they play at full speed without any slowdown as far as I can tell, including games that are known to slow down badly on other "Media Adapters"

Highlights so far...

1. New Super Mario World
2. Moonshell (especially being able to close the DS and continue listening to MP3s, like a giant iPod )
3. Finding out that the "Brain Training" game reckons I have the brain of an 80-year-old
4. Electroplankton
5. Snowboard Kids
6. After patching, roms save directly to the MicroSD card

Lowlights...

1. Lack of EQ on any MP3 playback software (I'm sure some kind person will write one)
2. Wifi is WEP only thus far, no support for WPA (and WEP was cracked about 50 years ago so I aint using that shit on my network)
3. Knowing there are loads of great Wifi tools available such as VNC, POP3 email and more but not being able to use them due to the reason above
4. No visualisations on MP3 playback software

I have the original ds.Been playing new super mario bros quite a bit .Wish i'd waited for the lite version.I was thinking of getting one of them adapter thingys. They sound good. How much did yours cost neversoft?
I suppose its an investment.lets me try before i buy with some of the games.

Posted by Neversoft on 08-30-2006 09:32 PM:

I got the Supercard Lite (£35) and a Max Media Launcher (£15)... Uses MicroSD cards so I grabbed 2x1gb transflash cards to go with it, one for roms, one for MP3

The vast majority of roms work perfectly although some of the very recent ones will need to patched with the next release of the patching software (you have to patch roms to work with the Supercard, as is the case with all of these flash linkers/adapters)... The way I understand it is, roms are distributed as straight dumps and the patching is to fix the savegames etc to work with whatever your flash cart is.

If you can, sell the DS and get a DSL with the Supercard addon, the one that uses MicroSD... As far as I know its the only one that runs all games without slowdown (I've tested all of the roms known for slowdown and all are fine). You'll need a semi-decent MicroSD card too, grab a Sandisk or similar not "generic wank number 42"

Just to recap on what is needed:

1. DS Lite
2. Supercard Lite MicroSD (front-loading MicroSD slot so you don't have to continually remove the Supercard from the DS)
3. Decent MicroSD card, preferably 1gb or more, formatted to FAT (not FAT32)
4. A "Passthrough" cart for the NDS slot, such as Max Media Launcher or a Superpass/Passkey
5. A big pile of roms

Didn't want to start a new thread for this.I got a leaflet from ebay through the door yesterday saying that If i spend £50 or more on one item then I will get a £10 off.
This doesn't seem just restricted to me so I thought I would share it with you guys.
Anyways i thought it might be handy in this thread.
This is what it says on the back of the card.

1.select and buy the item you want on ebay.co.uk ensuring that the seller accepts PayPal.Minimum prchase price is £50 to qualify for the offer and the maximum discount is £10.The coupon will expire on 21st September 2006.

2.Pay for your purchase with PayPal and enter the redemption code CUDDLYTOY1 when prompted to during the PayPal payment process. The email address you registered for your ebay and PayPal accounts must be the same in order to redeem your coupon successfully.

I had one of these coupons before and it was £5 off if i spent £25.
I bought an item that was £19.99 and the postage was £7 so I thought cool thats over £25 but i didn't get my discount because its only the purchase price that you get the discount on.
I was a bit pissed off but thats the way it goes I suppose.I thought I'd better tell you about that incase you make the same mistake.
Anyway I appologise if the coupon doesn't work but having a code like CUDDLYTOY1 makes me think that anyone wanting to use the code can do so.
All the best

@ JFresh

A 2.71 Downgrader has been released - no need for GTA UMD it runs off a tiff exploit like MPH's Origanal Downgrader.

Combine with DEVHOOK 0.46 and you can do all that , and fully emulate 2.71

Check out http://ps2nfo.com for the files needed (you need to register but registration is free)

Also has some DS Stuff, but not a lot

So far I've found the Sandisk and Toshiba MSD cards to work fine but I "believe" any card with 60x or greater read speed should do the trick. The Toshiba ones are also going for about £18, Sandisk are closer to £30.

It was originally used as a demo for the DS I think, then expanded into that doohickey.

There's plenty of odd stuff on the DS, I'll suggest more as I think of em.

I'm getting the sprog a DS for xmas so I can immediately steal it.

Posted by Neversoft on 09-09-2006 11:46 AM:

Well, I can only really comment on the Supercard cos that's what I have.

From what I understand it's a bit arse on the compatability and speed of GBA games but it runs DS games brilliantly.

An adapter called the M3 Lite has just come out which is essentially the same thing but flashier software, a prettier GUI (Supercard's is basic at best but it loads FAST) and better compatability with GBA games. The drawback is that it's almost twice the price and the MicroSD cards go into the side of it instead, meaning you have to remove the entire adapter from the DS's GBA slot just to get to the MSD card.

There's also one or two DS-slot only carts coming out (they use the top slot rather than the bottom GBA slot) but I *think* these carts require you to flash the DS's firmware... But don't quote me on that. One in particular doesn't use SD cards, it has a USB connector on it instead, which could be convenient if a little limiting.

Posted by Neversoft on 10-08-2006 12:19 PM:

Just because I love pHo and want to have his babies, here's some pros and cons as I see em...

1. M3 has a side-loading MicroSD slot which means the whole unit has to be removed from the DS to get the MicroSD card out, the Supercard is front-loading.
2. The M3 has a much prettier GUI, Supercard's is "functional" at best.
3. M3 has better GBA compatability.
4. Supercard is better supported by Homebrew developers, especially now they know how to access its internal ram (giving them an extra 32mb to play with IIRC) - the new DS Linux is the first app to exploit this. DSOrganise (one of the biggest homebrew apps) does not support M3 because the developers wont release the libraries to read/write to the SD card.
5. M3 seems to get patching software updates quicker than Supercard. The SC developers seem to wait until theres a few games that wont work before they release a new version of the patcher.
6. There is now a Supercard Lite that has rumble built-in

You could also consider the DS-Link and NinjaDS carts... They don't support GBA (at all afaik) but they use the DS slot only, freeing up the bottom slot for other stuff. I *think* the NinjaDS is a flashrom with a USB connector and the DS-Link uses MicroSD cards instead but don't quote me on that... I can't be arsed to check

Posted by antihero on 10-08-2006 12:38 PM:

think the m3 also has a built-in media player for music/movies, whereas the supercard doesnt (although it doesnt really matter once you have got hold of moonshell)

Posted by DethStar on 10-08-2006 06:41 PM:

I bought a DS a few weeks back, and I think what mainly want out of an add on is a movie player. An emulator would be nice, but not necessary. Which would you recommend?

I've been lookin' at this one: http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?ls...roducts_id=3983

But I have no experience with any of these... so, just curious as to everyone's thoughts..

Posted by Neversoft on 10-08-2006 07:18 PM:

As far as I know all of the carts require you to convert your movies into a DS-friendly format (Moonshell comes with a converter). Also, I think the media player that's built into the M3 player IS Moonshell, and an older version at that

There's also the EWin2 adapter which is front loading like the SC.

Most of the adapters have built-in emulation for various bits and pieces (SC handles NES and GB I think) but there's better homebrew emulators out there anyway so I wouldn't worry about that too much... Unfortunately there isn't a "great" SNES emulator but hell, ScummVM is available Be warned that when I was shopping around a lot of the manufacturers "claim" movie playback, PCEngine, Megadrive emus and all other crap but they're actually referring to homebrew stuff that is available and simply making it sound like their cart can fire laserbeams n stuff

::EDIT:: If DS is all you care about (and not GBA roms) then you should look into the DSLink or NinjaDS cos I don't think either of those even require you to patch the roms... You just shove the clean rom dump on the cart

Posted by pHo on 10-11-2006 12:19 AM:

As stated to the NS earlier, I went for the G6 Lite and the Pass We 3 earlier. Its a 4gbit (so 512mb) card with no external memory card, but this makes it fast as hell (microsd can't keep up with some things apparently) and is cheaper than buying an M3 Lite and a decent sized card from what I could tell.

I have zero interest in using it as a media player (i have a 60gb video capable mp3 player, so a 2gb max mp3 player means nothing to me) altho I'm hoping that some homebrew will be working eventually.

I paid £77 for it inclusive of VAT and delivery etc, from http://www.cheapmods.net and its looking like it'll be with me tomorrow, if thats the case then their service is excellent and i'll recommend em heartily. We'll see

DS-Extreme and NinjaDS both look great so long as GBA roms don't concern you. The good thing is, they should run all of the roms without patching... AFAIK they also run the new DS browser although you still need the ram expansion.

Nintendo DS

I'm very much interested in buying one. My only concern is the free WiFI multiplayer service...how is it?

Wait times to find a game, latency issues, etc..and are games like Mario Kart fun to play with strangers?

Posted by Neversoft on 11-02-2006 11:15 AM:

(I merged your thread with this one KayDawg cos, errrr, well... Look at the thread title

I'd wholeheartedly recommend getting a NDS. I haven't played it online much because it involves using WEP encryption (NDS doesn't support WSK) on the wireless router as opposed to WSK and WEP is easily crackable with the correct software.

You could use the NDS USB wifi dongle for the PC though, that only allows NDSs to connect I think.

As for wait times ect... It was VERY easy to connect and get a game of Metroid, although I got my arse kicked.

If you're curious about whats going on online with NDS multiplayer stuff, you can interrogate the servers using WFCStatus

there sure is, got one for a guy at work, just check this out

its exactly the same size and shape as a GBA cart, so fits in the old DS perfectly, although it uses a miniSD instead of microsD.

There is also a rumble version that is actually cheaper, but it doesnt support GBA.

have a look here to find your nearest dealer.

EDIT: sorry, didnt read your post properly. The adapter shown above WILL work in the DSLite, BUT it sticks out and looks a bit stupid.

i`ve read that there is a virus called brick that can fuck up your ds

Posted by Vampire on 12-02-2006 05:36 PM:

It's an actual ROM and doesn't infect existing ROMs. Once run, it erases your flash effectively turning your DS into a brick (hence it's imaginative name - DSBrick).

It comes in one of two files - r0mloader.nds (151361 bytes) and taihen.nds (548673 bytes). It's very unlikely that you'll get infected by it unless you run one of the two ROMs mentioned or some fuck-knuckle renames one of them to look like another ROM and releases it (you can always check the size of the files in that case).

Posted by geoffbob30 on 12-02-2006 06:25 PM:

cheers for that

Posted by pHo on 12-02-2006 08:20 PM:

goto http://www.advanscene.com and get their NDS software, it'll do everything from checking CRC and renaming to conventional standards, and then putting in proper order etc. Its a handy bit of kit to have, and you'll know the ROMs you're importing are always fine if you use it first.

Its only the homebrew stuff you tend to find something that'll brick your DS, and if you mod the DS in the first place (not something I'd personally do to a Lite cos its a bit risky, the older ones are easier) it won't affect it.

ALL of the NDS Mario Games kick arse in various ways:

1. Mario64 DS... Just as addictive as it's N64 "daddy" but with added playable characters (some stars can only be obtained with specific characters).
2. Mariokart DS... Oh jesus, oh jesus, oh jesus! Best MarioKart game ever, period.
3. Mario vs Donkey Kong 2... Like Lemmings but better.
4. Mario 3x3... Weird controls at first but quite an addictive Basketball game.
5. Yoshis Island DS... Same basic game as on the N64. Quite good though.
6. Mario and Luigi - Partners in Time... Dunno, possiby shit

I love my DS and want to sex it - when I can get my damned hands on it, the GF and/or her kid appear to have taken a shine to MY BASTARD BIRTHDAY PRESENT!

Poor sap...you obviously missed out on Yoshi's Island for SNES...which makes Yoshi's Story on n64 look like crap.

Anyways, I love my DS, I got Yoshi's Island for it last week and just finished it...but now I'm going to pick me up an m3 simply (most likely)..sounds like the most reasonably priced and practical

anyone know if there are good NES emulators out there?

Using Max thingy-me-bob and supercard lite.

might just be a dodgy d/l

You need to replace your NDSRominfo.dat file in the Supercard Patcher folder. Grab the update from here: http://www.supercard.tk/

I got NDS Browser
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_Browser
but it says Memory Expansion required.
Anyone know how to get round this?
Also I'll be using my NDS (or trying to use it) in a hot spot in a hotel, how safe would it be to check my emails? could some cunt that knows more about all this shit be able to read my passwords?

I thought that DSO was using the DLDI library now, which supports M3... Have you actually tried it?

I don't give a fuck, Supercard FTW! Although I don't use the DS over Wifi anyway because it only supports the broken WEP encryption and I'm not cunting my home network just to take the DS online.

I did try DSOrganise, it wouldn't work and read the browser is absolute shit anyway.

Bought DS Lite Browser for £19.99 from Gamestation.

How safe would it be to use a passwords on it for emails and forums?

(from a hot spot)

Also will US games work online in UK?

It shouldn't be any *less* secure than any other browser. In some ways it'll be more secure cos your DS aint going to have trojans etc.

AFAIK there are NO regional limitations on the DS so "Yes" to point 2
