PAL SVCD's on NTSC system play?

Greets all,

2 simple questions here. One is OT but I want to keep this to one post.

1) I want to know if it's normal for a DVD player (I have Apex ad-5131) to be able to playback PAL SVCD's, as I'm in the USA (NTSC).

I burnt a cue/bin with cdrwin, and only after read the .nfo where I discovered that the format was PAL. I excpected the screen to "scroll" when I played the movie (as I remember from my C-64 days if a PAL game wasn't "fixed"; AND also with my Amiga if I don't switch to PAL mode, there would be problems).

How is this possible? What are the differencecs NTSC/PAL on NTSC TV?

2) Kind of a follow-up to the above: Is there any program which will allow me to "edit" the above bin/cue (obviously without first burning to a CD) to re-encoded as an NTSC video, perhaps some program that allows me to burn the bin/cue to the HD as a "Virtual CD"?

Do you think it's even necessary to convert?

TIA

Jim

In answer to both of your questions, VCDs are what you would call "region free". They are not limited to region detection on most dvd players so almost any will play on any. Second, I find the easiest way to convert would be to use a program like cdmage and extract the mpegav.dat file to a location. You can then use isobuster to convert the file to mpeg. And finally use tmpeg to convert it to ntsc format. All of this information can be found on www.dvdrhelp.com which has replaced www.vcdhelp.com

Wha?

#1 he asked about SVCDS

#2 not all players can do on the fly NTSC->PAL conversion

#3 You led him to the same answer that I gave him

mike, thanks for the info, and the proggy suggestions.

Scott, I know about dvdrhelp but I have to wait a few days before I can post there; what I'm asking isn't covered in FAQ's.

I want to know why the PAL movie plays back seemingly normally, without screen roll. I'm not sure if you knew what I was referring to in the top post; perhaps you don't 'go back' far enough to know what I was referring to there.. dunno.

In any event, thanks anyways.

Jim

Dude, the answers you seek are all there, you don't need to post.

Check the player listings for your Apex ad-5131 and see if it's able to playback PAL SVCD's

Read thru the forums for "DVD NTSC PAL Conversion", the reason why the picture doesn't roll, and all the other info you're looking for is there.

And finally, if your player cannot do on the fly conversion, you could use VCDgear to extract the MPG and then convert using TMPEG or other programs, or use a virtual program like daemon tools to play the bin from the HD, and thus not worry about converting formats.

We were all newbies once, but should try and exhaust your searching and reading possibilities before you post.

You are correct Scotty, I was just leading him where you said. Just trying to be helpful and break it down a little for him. I still don't think he is getting what I am saying about the PAL format. All it is is just a format in name only as far as VCD or SVCD is concerned. The only time your DVD player will detect a difference if it has region encoding is if it is a DVD. As far as APEX I currently own 4, though, not the one that he is speaking of and all of them play VCDs. And as far as region encoding they all played out of the box except for one of them AD-1100 which I got a firmware upgrade on from our favorite site that we mentioned above.
