I found a decent deal at best buy

This player was $70 philips dvp5982
This player was $40 philips dvp3140

The $70 player has the upconversion to 1080p which I can't use. It also has the usb port so I have to at least get a jump drive now so I can burn my Heroes eps on it so I don't have to waste a disk.

So far both players put that magnavox to shame.

I tested one xvid disk out on each player, So far no problems, and it fits to the screen. I am testing a dvdr movie on the 3140, and so far no problems.

Well DUH

I have been touting the Philips 5960 for months, and I bought the 5982 6 weeks ago for the new TV.

Excellent players!

haha

I know you had the 5960 and liked it, I didn't realize you had the 5982.

Have you had any problems with .vob files? Like a normal burnt dvdr? That is my main concern. I haven't watched any full dvdr movies.

I did burn the season finale of 24 xvid on cdr, and it played perfectly.

Both players are working great.

just buy a xbox 1 and install xbmc on it, better than any shitty phillips divx player.

haven't had any problems with any of it, actually.

And for the record, I've got the xbox and xbmc, etc... Still use my standalone more.

Wouldn't you have to mod your Xbox for that?

Thanks Elj. My buddy has an Olevia 37" HDTV. They were having electrical problems at there place, and the tv now has problems, It can do 720p, but when the source is 1080i it zooms in and you can't view but 1/8 of the screen. His RCA dvd recorder upscales using the hdmi cable, It automatically upconverts.

I took my philips over his place, and we were able to get the 720p to work perfectly with this dvd player, This player is on his list to buy now.
