Popcorn Hour A-110

Fuck yes. So after about 2 months of beating the piss out of this thing, never turning it off, letting a 3 year old, 5yo 7yo and some teenagers mess with it I have little to no complaints and Im amazingly happy with it.

It handles subs (external and internal) perfectly, plays 1080p over a gigabit network flawlessly (PCH only supports 100Mb/s however), stops and resumes, great audio decoding with passthrough option.

Im running it with a linux server (SMB with WINS) and if anyone wants I can take some pictures. Compared to a WD HD packages, IMO it has a better GUI, a community for web services (portals, RSS and internet radio with way too many stations) and great support.

Unless the GUI has changed since it was released, and from the pictures I saw back then, I would say the GUI is horrible looking on the PCH. Agreed it certainly looks to be more fully featured than the WD, but it has been released for well over a year (maybe 2), and it costs ~2.5 times as much as the WD. (You are obviously richer than me ).

The WD has a fledgling community hacking scene and they have already enabled wifi streaming with a USB adapter. The latest "official pre-release" firmware seems to have fucked the quality of the rendering of the subs, however I would only ever need subs for foreign parts of films, so I'm not all that fussed.

For £80 I suppose you get what you pay for, (no HDMI 1.3 therefore no Dolby True-HD for example) but for the price I think its a nifty little box.

Like most things, I suppose, you pays your money you takes your choice. I think the PCH must be a really good product, just couldn't justify the cost myself. The WD does pretty much everything I need, especially as I managed to get a DTS capable decoder for £25 off fleabay!

Looks wise I would say its personal preference. However PCH GUI can be skinned and altered with nothing more than an HTML file. With that HTML file you can include links to anything on the web like custom weather, ski reports, etc.

I like that, I like that a lot. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the WD unit, but I really don't think it's got the clout to do all that the PCH does. It wouldn't surprise me to see that get bought out by one of the big boys to be honest.

TBH I hant looked at the WD TV HD's GUI while it was actually playing a movie. It is pretty slick. Much nicer than the PCH.

I've got a HDX-1000 on its way and to be honest I can't bloody wait!!!

Near enough identical (apart from looks) to the PCH, although they are pissing around with the firmware so there isn't DTS downmixing available on it yet (although i believe it is possible to use the firmware from the PCH A110 to get round this)

Not using a dedicated server but will be fitted with a 1TB drive for all that 1080p loveliness

Hurry up mr.postman you little bastard!!!!
