Hard Drive Mechanic worked for me a little while back. Recovered all the data I lost on my home office pc. I had a few updated files (photoshop, excel, word) I didn't backup that day, so I figured I'd try out a program that could recover the data to see if it works. And it did.
Nortons Ghost worked for me too.
Nice thread title by the way
I used getdataback (old version) in the past. It was great, but corrupted my rar files. The new one might not have this issue, but the crack was not working anymore. And $80 is a bit much for a one time issue.
I used this....
Open source and did the job....

Winenternals erd commander.
Thanks guys! I used getdataback and I was able to find one of the text files I was after with that. I used PhotoRec to find another but it was awfully difficult. After like 5 passes on my HD I just wanted to go to bed. I had to find another app to search through all the text files it recovered. Most my photos were missing or damaged, a whole sub folder was gone
