Slow! What Happened?

What's Up Everyone,

Lately, all the programs I use for movies are running slow, very slow, except downloading. After downloading, I unrar files and everything is fine, but if I use WinAvi to convert files, what used to take less than an hour is now taking 4, 6, 8 hours. And when I go to burn a movie, either one that I have converted or even an img. file that I have downloaded is now taking 2, 4, 6 hours to burn using any program, ie; Nero, ImgTool, Alchohol 120% it dosn't matter what program I use they have all slowed way down. The rest of the computer seems to be working as always fast surfing and graphics whatever, and I have not changed anything lately.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

When did you last defrag your hard drive?

Have you installed any new programs lately?

No new programs installed lately, but have upgraded DSL speed.

If it's optical drive-based stuff that is slowing (ripping and burning DVD's for example) then XP may have reverted the drive to PIO mode instead of DMA...

... Go into Device manager, expand the IDE controllers doohickey, right-click and select properties for each IDE channel in turn (although it's probably the 2nd primary and 2nd secondary that your optical drives are on), go into the advanced settings and ensure DMA is enabled.

Beyond that... Check your hard disk space, especially the C: drive and defrag the bugger.

Oh, and check your performance in Task Manager.
