Wii: The Godfather, Black Hands Edition
After playing the PC version eons ago I was pretty stoked at the thought of a Wii version, especially considering the level of control in fight scenes with the Wiimote... I wasn't dissapointed!
Well, I finally grabbed it and despite a couple of reservations it's an excellent game still. Certainly as good as the original and probably better thanks to the well thought out and simplistic control system.
The game is essentiall a GTA clone set in 1940s New York. Violence and corruption are the order of the day and the number of Police kick-backs and rackets involved in the game is testimony to this. The missions are clearly explained and the map is informative. The game itself plays very well.
For what it's worth I played the missions for about two hours and I dickced about causing mayhem for another hour or so. Its the violence coupled with the "sandbox" gameplay that makes this game an excellent release for repressed sociapaths like myself. There's nothing quite as enjoyable as slapping some poor bastard around in the street and then pushing him in front of a car or repeatedly bouncing some unfortunate twats head off a wall before dropping him to the floor and snapping his neck - NICE!
All of this of course is done with the new control system which despite my reservations, works VERY well. In fact, after Wii sports it's probably the best implementation of a Wii control system I've seen thus far - the developers obviously spent some considerable time developing it and its appreciated.
Sadly though, the game has one major let down: The graphics. Whilst I didn't expect it to be a graphical tour-de-force I didn't expect the graphics to have been lifted straight from the XBox version and crammed into the Wii. Many textures look blocky and flat and the whole thing has a distinct last-gen appearance, although it is very smooth - I didn't notice any popup, tearing or frames dropping but that's hardly suprising, I suspect the Wii's GPU could read a book/cook a flan and still be able to render this game without breaking into a sweat. Shame on you EA, you couldn've tarted the graphics a bit but I guess you needed to get the game out of the door seeing as you completely missed the boat with the Wii launch.
The audio doesn't really deserve comment... It has sound! It's not shit nor is it remarkable, it just does what it does.
So, overall we have a game that is at least as playable as the original, with a much improved control system and graphics that look more like an PS2/XBox game. Its worth a purchase but not at full RRP - shop around (I got it for £30) or wait until you can grab the fucker preowned.
Gameplay 8/10
Graphics 4/10
Sound 5/10
Overall 7/10

Holy fuck, now I must play it.
I was put off my the "red" cover, thinking that it's just Nintendo putting their "happy face - good job" approval sticker on something they tweaked to take away blood or violence and such.
But since you say it had GTA type play, I'm interested. Anyone that has a Wii already knows that the change in traditional controls has yet to be an issue with any of the games.
NS - I need a review of TMNT, Elebits, Pirates of the Caribbean, Meet the Robinsons, or Shrek the 3rd. I promise to flog you should I ever meet you (choose your definition!)
Elebits has my interest and may be worth a purchase, I'll keep you posted (mainly because the Wii is also in danger of being at the receiving end of a WiiFree chip so I can check out the games that I would never consider buying. If that happens, expect lots of reviews!).
As for Nintendo "sanitising" The Godfather... I don't *think* they have it seems essentially the same as the PC version. It's certainly violent but I have to confess to thinking the PC version had loads of bad language in the dialogue, something I haven't noticed on the Wii version. This isn't to say they HAVE censored the script, but they may have, I'm not sure and can't be arsed checking... It doesn't detract from the game.
I'm glad you're finding the reviews useful as well... I'm trying not to waffle on too much and be honest in my views. At least you know I haven't been "bought" like most official review sites

I don't think they sanitized it. I hear a lot of f-word stuff. Plus there's blood all over. And I would think it could be worse than the others, just because when you choke someone, you really put the choke on with your hands. Oh how I love strangling someone and feeling their heart beat thinning through the wii remote's shaking. Does that make me psycho? I hope so. Anyways, I highly condone picking up a copy...or downloading it. I didn't like elebits, but it was free from download, so I got it. Just not my thing. I've heard it compared to katamari, but it in all honestly isn't anything like it. I hate how you have to build up your gun every single level. You start with a weak gun and have to get more bits to get it charged up over and over. You'd think they'd carry over the power from level to level, but they don't. It's just not my thing. But godfather YES!
Aye, I forgot to come back to this thread and clear that up - there's plenty of sweary stuff in there, Nintendo didn't take a knife to it.
I agree on the means of execution though. The strangulation and "instant" neck breaker are both quite gruesome to do with the Wiimote... Hopefully Take2 will have a good look at The Godfather when deciding on the control scheme for Manhunt.
But yeah, since writing the review the game has gone UP in my estimation. I'm even inclined to give it a 6/10 for it's graphics due to some improved lighting effects over the other versions - it's still a bit blocky and "flat" in places though.

ok, I'm as addicted to this game as a mother cunter (I don't even know what that means but it sounds really "sweary")
The previous versions were good but the control scheme and extra missions really do make this an excellent port.
BUY IT YOU SHITTERS!

I will!
Found a john that slags them from $35.
Likely won't chip it now.
$35? that's like, about £15 or something... Damn that's cheap. Then again, isn't an "expensive" game in the US only about $50? The fucking whores charge £40 over here ($80+) RRP, although many shops discount. Generally you can find games in the UK for £30 but its still fucking expensive compared to you assholes.
Maybe if your games and food were more expensive you fat lazy cunts would exercise more and eat less
