Its not just the 360 that dies...

As I found out this morning. Happily playing COD4 and all of a sudden there's no sound and although I can carry on playing, a clicking can be heard from the drive. Great. So I quit the game, reboot, and the drive is fucked. Won't read games, dvd's or cd's. It doesn't even spin up. I wouldn't mind but i've only had the cunt a week.

From searching round the internets it seems like a regular occurrence, especially where PES2008 and COD4 are involved. Picking up a new replacement on tuesday.

Anyone else got any tales of woe?

the shop are changing it as i've only had it a week, but sony are also shipping replacement units i believe they have accepted it as a problem. Something to do with a diode in the bluray drive.

its the 40gb, running firmware 2.10.

seems to be a small % of failures at the moment, but some people seem to be on theor 3rd unit. Something to do with a blown diode in the BR drive. And its been reported on all versions of the PS3.

40% does seem very high, but if it is the case and sony have put shitty components in the 40gb version, they are up shit creek.

What is weird though is the amount of drives dying since christmas...
