Tiscali vs Outlook

Please help me

I've recently formatted a friends pc, removing XP and installing Vista.

Prior to formatting he could send/receive e-mail with Outlook without a problem on a cable connection.

Now for some reason he can only receive e-mail. I've checked the POP and SMTP settings and they're correct and every other entry is correct.

I've Googled around a bit but it's all a bit inconclusive, checked Tiscali's website and followed their online guide without success and rang Tiscali's Indian call centre who (eventually) just told me to do what I've already done.

Any input would be appreciated

Which version of Outlook? Does Windows Live Mail send? Which authentication method are you using?

Maybe it's a firewall issue? The port(s) are being blocked. Try and disable Windows Firewall and see what happen.

I'm going to assume Tiscali is the ISP? Is he using there email address? If for example if he's using a comcast email, and are using a Tiscali isp, you can recieve all day long but the moment you try and send it it gets denied, You have to forward the servers to send out. I maybe using the wrong term.

Setting up an acct like that is easiest with outlook/incedimail. Never set one up with Thunderbird.

Did you check the boxes for authentication on the outgoing server, and SSL connection?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Para, yeah, you're right receiving not a problem, just the sending issue. Having Googled it seems like they are seperate servers that deal with incoming/outgoing.

@Fuckmonkey, no I didn't mate, do you think that could be the problem? I'm not around his pc so not in a position to check.
In response to your first post, Windows Live Mail sends using @live.co.uk without a problem.

Again, thanks for the input, any suggestions would be great

I would definitely check them if you can receive but not send - especially if it works elsewhere. Some ISPs require you to log on before sending so that you can't shovel crap through their servers - I'm with Virgin and they don't require a login but many others do.

Conversely if it is ticked and they don't want it then that can cause a problem too, as the server is expecting an anonymous logon and gets a username instead.

As for SSL that will change the outgoing port used, which may not exist on the ISP server if it's not used. I had that problem when synching my PDA to my old office Exchange server - not the same situation I know, but indicative of the kinds of problems Outlook can have.
