Good movies that no-one knows about
We all know about the normal good movies...the blockbuster smashes but what about the Foriegn/Limited/Small movies that no one has heard of? This may be a dupe, but I was just looking for some good movies to watch that are maybe a little different or something cool that I had never heard before
Better Luck Tomorrow. It got so little publicity, and yet manages to be so good.

I hadn't heard about it until I saw something on IMDB
Meh, I'm a looser, something new...
Well, Interstate 60 comes to mind. Limited release, but a perfect 10/10 in my book. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

Better Luck Tommorow was awful...I really found the movie stupid and boring...
And if nobody knew about the film, how would they know if it was good or not?
Equilibruim
Battle Royale
Donnie Darko
there are plenty...I can't think of anymore
__________________

There are a few films in recent years that I had only heard about through word of mouth and on the internet, so I don't think they were really advertised...
May
Requiem For a Dream
Donnie Darko
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Poolhall Junkies
There are a ton of others, but those are all I can think of at the moment
The only film so far that i have not heard of is Y Tu Mama Tambien... any good?
For fairly unknown films, check out some of the limited release films groups put out. Films such as Tape which is very different from your average flick and quite good in my opinion.

Tape, Spun, Lockdown, Just A Kiss, Final, Lovely & Amazing, Tadpole, ZigZag, Playaz Court... just to name a few.
Not all overly unknown or neccesarily films i would recommend, but everybody has different taste so thought id list a whole range. But what most of them have in common is the limited releasing and very different styles they are done in.
I have a huge list of my limited/foriegn releases that are fairly unknown somewhere as they are the type of movies i usually go for. I'll post some more, perhaps better, films if i get the chance.

too add to the list:
Whale Rider
Interstate 60
Morven Callar
The Sidewalks Of New York
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Spun
The Good Thief
Dirty Pretty Things
that's all for now, but i got heaps more.
Cube is on the border of mainstream/obscurity and is a great flick.
As for REALLY obscure, but great: Child's Play
IMDB listing
No, not the one about the Chucky doll, but a really cool "what the hell is going on here, and what is this all about?" flick. It was a Hammer house of Mystery and suspense made for TV job, but it still stands out as one of those films that had me glued to the screen.

Y Tu Mama Tambien was great, probably one of the best coming of age movies I've ever seen. I like Om3n's mention of Tadpole; it had a set of nice laughs and situations...
not to sure if this did get some hype but ' Big Shot: Confessions Of A Campus Bookie ' was a good movie that i doint think i heard about until i watched it.

I think a lot of people know about 100 Girls...
if you like cheesy 70's and 80's horror films, check out the Sleepaway Camp Trilogy and The Lost Boys.

Whale rider started off fairly unknown screening around film festivals, and im not too sure about other countries. But here in Australia the Partick Rafter Foundation screened it pretty much nationally at the begining of the year as a fund raiser with1/3 price tickets. So i'd say that was a pretty well know film.
Pretty well made movie, One New Zealand should be proud of.

Here's another film not many people have heard of, at least I don't know anyone who has heard of it and that's reason enough for me to post it.
-Life or something like it (Angelina Jolie film, she has blonde hair and a sister, nice ending)
volcano high is pretty kool.
Life or Something like it was a pretty decent flick. Centropy did a pretty good job with that one if memory serves. Just doesn't look quite right for AJ to have blonde hair like that though.

Requiem for a Dream
about drug addiction
The movie Memento was rather strange and good at the same time. I'm not sure if this movie was mainstream or what, all I know is that I did not hear about it until a friend recommended it to me and rather enjoyed it when I saw it. If you haven't seen it i highly recommend it, but once again I am not sure if this was an extremely small release or I just completel missed it.

Showcase kicks ass
Mememto was mainstream, but it turned out very well. That technique has very rarely been used.
Requim for a dream was also a very differently made film, and yea quite depressing to watch.

actually Donnie Darko and er uh.. Memento
I'm a sucker for japanese horror so, JU-ON (the first 2, not the remake) and such wonderfull wicked stuff. Those flicks are basically very much like Ringus are. Also TOMMY series is nice.
How bout Ed Wood?

Groundhog Day
The Boiler Room
The Man Who Knew Too Little
Bill Murray has made some good comedies, Groundhog Day was probably one of the most underrated comedies of the 90s.
Everybody knows about Groundhog Day.
I liked it, but got tired of the same humor over and over by the time it finished.

Loving God.... Vengeful God...
These are some of my favs
Thursday:
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0124901
Its about a former drug dealer who starts a new life but his past catches up with him. Lots of blood and gore but well directed!!
Versus:
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0275773
This one is kinda horror action move that invovles zombies, but its also well directed!!
Meet the feebles:
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0097858
Its one of peter jacksons first movies. It all puppets but really funny and weird. Definitly worth a watch in my opinon.
i cant think of any others right now but let me think over night and get back to ya. But if u havent seen these movies check them out asap.
a friend told me to rent a movie today so i did, just watched it and it was really good. i had never heard of it and i dont recal anyone ever talking about it but its called The Experiment (Das Experiment) its a german movie
too bad it wasn't dubbed in english but if you dont mind the subs you should check it out and besides its the kind of movie where the dialog isn't too important cause what you see is pretty much self explanitory
and its also based on a true story (i love those)

... there are more good movies out there than you can think of, it's a sad thing most peeps dont know how to read subbies or understand film from pre-1990. you only limit yourself.
Nice selection....
I just prefer not to read subs, it can spoil the experience of watching a film if you have to sit there and read at the same time.
[Edit]
Of corse, subs are always prefered over dubs.
How about Ringu, Original jap version of 'The Ring'
Cult Horror films.. there is also a Ringu 2 and more recently a Ringu 0 which is actually a prequel to the original.
[/Edit]

Dubbed english is usually pretty horrid and can botch the enjoyment of a film. For example, I was watching Intacto last week, and while I wanted to watch with subs, I was out-voted and we had to watch it dubbed. The voice acting was terrible and was the only drawback of the film, which I would have otherwise been thoroughly caught up in. If you can't handle subs, because maybe you can't read or you have problems doing more than one thing at a time, then by all means cheat the integrity of the film by dubbing in poorly acted voice-overs.
I actually love subtitles. So much so that I'll watch normal TV with closed captions turned on. They help a lot when you miss something that someone said due to accents, sound effects, music, someone sneezing, etc.

1. Thats what it said on the DVD cases
2. It is pronounced Ring in english but spelt Ringu because of the simple fact that it is a japanese film and thats the way it was chosen to be spelt.
(yes, i pronounce it ring)
And if you don't believe me, check imdb, the official titles are spelt with the u on the end. Since they are japanese films, ill spell em with the official and japanese titles.
And they subbed not dubbed, i hate dubbed films.

I dont download a film simply because it has limited in the folder name, however i am much more likely to get something i am unsure about, or have never heard of if it has limited in the folder.
I generally prefer low budget/limited ect films too the so called blockbusters.

^ I've found some real gems getting limited movies...better than the $50+ million budget crap playing in theatres right now.
"THE KILLER" (HK MOVIE)
starring chow yun fat and directed by john woo,
pretty old movie, but the action scenes are the shit, better than face off shit (most was re-created from the killer b/c it was also directed by john woo)
its the best action movie that was ever made from hong kong..chow yun fat does his thang with the guns...the best original action scenes...
