Review: The Transporter (2002)

The Transporter (2002) Review by Jessica Fletcher.

WARNING: This review sort of contains spoilers!

In 1998, a movie emerged from France that left audiences picking their jaws up off the floor as they left the theatre. In 2000, a sequel to that very movie was released. Again, wowing audiences across the globe. In fact, a third movie is due to be released next year along with an American remake (*shudder*) and a spin-off tv show.

That movie was called Taxi. And this movie, The Transporter is made by the same team that brought you those fine movies.

Playing as a sort of French James Bond type archial anti-hero, Jason Statham is 'The Transporter'. A man whose choice of business is to deliver the kind of packages that UPS or Royal Mail wouldn't even consider. He's exacting, methodical and precise in every which way of his work. Customers are to abide by a strict set of rules laid in place by 'The Transporter'. Don't wanna play? Then the deals' off.

This movie is like a game of poker and getting the perfect hand.

After a gob-smackingly gorgeous opening action sequence, we are treated to a small tidbit of time getting to know our hero. But the movie doesn't give you the luxury of settling down to take in big streams of information. Within minutes you are thrown head first in to another explosion of action. And that's how it is for pretty much all of the movie. The conversation sequences come in small, digestable, bite-sized amounts; but for the rest of it's duration we are hit with wave after wave of lip-smackingly awesome action sequences that just leave you speechless.

Not only are we treated to cars, explosions, an awesome soundtrack and some great chop sockey sequences; we are also given a lovely helping of eye candy in the form of Lai Kwai (Qi Shu). This woman is stunningly beautiful and for a moment i felt like going to wank city (but then i realised there was still a movie to watch!). Qi plays her role very well, although it is painstakingly obvious that this woman could do with a few more English lessons. But she did well and played the role with a decent helping of flair and confidence, hopefully to justify her gaining more roles in further movies.

What is there to say about the camerawork? If you have seen Taxi you'll know what to expect. Lightning fast cuts of skids, donuts, wheelspins, crashes, handbrake turns; you name it this movie has it. Imagine David Fincher doing an action movie on acid and your sort of there. The soundtrack is equally superb with every sequence given it's just desserts with a great score or an awesome piece of music leaving you nestled to your seat building up the excitement as the minutes tick away.

It's a shame this movie was over too soon, i could have happily sat for a further 20 or so minutes watching this movie. In retrospect though, i do see now that things were neatly packed in to it's 95min duration.

I would like to take the opportunity in this review to tell Vin Diesel and his fans, and the studios to FUCK OFF. Those of you who know me pretty well know i don't like the guy anyway (except for El Diablo, which was ok). it is with saying this that i would like to announce Jason Statham as 'King Of Action Flicks 2002'. A title richly deserved by this man. He delivers an incredible performance in this movie and basically shits over the weak and feeble homosexual that is Vin Diesel. Studios, listen up, get Jason Statham in a few more movies, he deserves it.

If i had anything negative to say about this movie, it would probably be the atrocious accents used in this movie. When Qi Shu was speaking in some scenes, it was very difficult to make out what she was saying. This also applies to the French Inspector and some of the other cast members. Perhaps a use of subtitles in some of the foreign language sequences would have helped too, although maybe these have been added to the theatre print, i am not sure.

If you like, cars, girls, action, explosions or all of these things in one movie, make sure you watch this. I recommend you watch it with friends and not solo (unless you're thinking of pulling one off over Qi Shu ) for more enjoyment. You'll be talking about this movie for ages afterwards. Watch it.

yea i enjoyed this movie.. action wise its great.. and the taxi movies are great [u forgot to mention a dreamcast game made from the movie.. called Taxi 2... it was interesting to say the least ]

only thing that needs brutal criticism.. are the love scenes.... any time... the transporter and the girl are in the same frame.. sappy.. [and i mean SAAAPY].. music plays.. it kills the scene... in my opinion but the movie is still quite entertaining

One scene that left me going "holy shit that was so cool!" was the bit where he fights those guys in the oil slick then destroys a bike to use the bicycle clips for stability.

Not a bad review aside from the wank crap and the usual "Gay" putdowns which seem to be the craze these days. You wacky kids!

Yeah, good review, but I don't think he's a REAL movie critic! lol

I didn't like this movie on first viewing, but I watched it again and I liked it a lot. Don't agree with MS on how hot the chick was (as usual!) but I do agree with him that Big Jason should be given more action roles. He has the potential to become a superstar.

The one thing I don't like about him is his accent attempts. Why does he try and change it? He sounds OK with his natural accent, so he should just let it be.

Yeah, the whole accent thing in the movie annoyed me a bit, but it was a very minor thing (in my opinion) to fault in the movie.

It also got a 9/10 because it was simply a movie of pure enjoyment. It set out to impress the viewer from the start and it achieved it's goal many times over. Sure, it gave little attention to a juicy plotline, but then again, what action movies ever do?

This was just an out and out muscle-fest which delivered on all counts and i thought it was bloody brilliant!

Aww, william! I thought Qi Shu was real hot! But i like Asian chicks so....

Glad you agree with me that Statham should be in more movies. Hopefully the studios won't just toss him in to a bewildering stash of action movies, i'd like to see him do something else.

But if Jason Statham and Vin Diesel had a scrap on the playing field after school, Statham would beat his ass to the ground.

i will say that this was a really cool movie.. but not quite as cool as kiss of the dragon.. i mean.. where he rings the doorbell then takes off runnng and kicks it down.. classic.. BUT.. remember kiss of the dragon.. where he runs into a room to hide.. and conveniently there is a room full of black belts.. AHHHH entertainment

yea that scene w/ the doorbell and him bustin the hell out of it.. was beautiful ... great action scene... about 6 or 7 of us were sittin around half watchin it.. and of course we had to rewind and see it again

a part i thought was cool was after he kicks in the door and starts fighting the guys, he kicks the table and the gun goes flying and he catches it behind his back to shoot a bad guy...WOW hehe
