Solaris Review

"And death shall have no dominion"- this is a line stolen from poet Dylan Thomas which is supposed to define this movie and the love affair which it reflects. It is supposed to inspire us to ask the unattainable question: Is there life after death? However when used in combination with George Clooney's new movie Solaris, it serves as a poorly conceived catch phrase over which a tapestry of good ideas fall short of their intentions. The movie strives to ask so many questions that you'll be left wondering, what's the point? George Clooney does a great job fulfilling the role of Chris Kelvin, a psychiatrist who visits a ship inside of Solaris to find out what's wrong with a group of researchers there. However in the ship he dreams up his dead lover Rheya (Natascha Melhone) who committed suicide after giving up their child. Sadly, Melhone never seems to quite get the hang of her roll. You want to feel sorry for her, but at the same the movie keeps emphasizing that she’s not human, and dormant memories of John Carpenter’s The Thing arise. Snow (Jeremy Davis) also gives out an awesome performance as a schizophrenic, although I’m not really sure that’s the word to use as technically he’s still his residual self, you’ll have to see the movie to understand that. Gordon (Viola Davis) gives us the role of the extremely intelligent antagonist trying to get the hell out of the Solaris field. Although her performance was not superb, it was not sub-par and she simply comes off as a character to which you’ll feel little emotional attachment to.

Acting set aside, this movie simply has no redeemable value, unless of course you happen to be female, then you’ll enjoy the countless times you get to see Clooney’s exposed chest/buttocks. However, when the movie’s over you’re left with a feeling of: what the hell was that? I shall digress from assigning any grade value to the movie as I feel people are entitled to make their own opinions and I personally detest reviews as they set the reader in a mind set to either like-dislike the film based on someone else’s experiences, I choose to review to express my opinion. Even having said that, I can foresee (due to recent events) that people will mock my opinion or flat out discredit my seeing the move based on my actions to the late MG. Well you’ve your right to challenge my review of the movie based on your own opinionated review after seeing the movie, however the fact that I’ve seen the movie should be fairly clear. If you’d like proof I give you several things that aren’t publicly available (to my knowledge) on the release…

1) After Gibarian’s video transmission to Clooney, the timer on the bottom will read 14/44:15:22:12.

2) The movie opens with a dizzying view of Clooney’s office ceiling with a couple arguing over modern day media.

3) While Clooney is coming toward Snow’s room and while he is talking with him we get to hear the awful lyrics of ICP.

Well that’s all, flame away if you like, thanks for reading if you did.

I don’t really see it as anything other than protecting myself, and if you'll look here you can see that the fire's more or less still going on their side. However, having said that I do see how it could detract from the read, and I’m sorry I had to include it, but I felt it necessary.
