You are incorrect nitemare. Mintek model 1600 is the cheapest. I got one at best buy last night for $40. It plays vcd/svcd/xvcd/mp3/kodakpicturecd/ntsc/pal/etc.

I have Sony DVP-NS410, and it is the best

It plays ev'ry format I have found
svcd/vcd/mp3/cdrw/cdr/dvd+r/dvd+rw/dvd-r/dvd-rw etc...

Even bulk cdr's works fine. I usually burn SVCD's to CDRW and watch them with this and then burn another movie on them.

Some data from vcdhelp, this is for model 405, but 410 is the same (just a bit better

:: thats unusual, sony must've changed their laser cos the old models (i have a 536 from about 3 years ago) refuse to play most CDR brands (princo worked, and a few others) and didn't play any "off" bitrates (xvcd was ok, xsvcd refused)-pHo

I have a Sony DVP-NS305 and it refuses to play SVCD, i thought all Sony's weren't programmed to play SVCD's (i now stand corrected). (but using the Header trick works fine).

Brought it a few months ago, plays all brands of CD-R i've tried (100pk spools etc), VCDHelp Link

Strange, mine works fine with SVCD's... And I thought that 305/310/405/410 are all built with same technic =/

oh, and mine's region free. of course
Since its too boring to wait movies to be released for R2

Pho, I have a Sony DVP-S330 from a couple years ago and it also is picky as hell. The only thing I've ever gotten to work in it are Memorex CD-RW silvers. Every Sony I've ever tried blows for vcd/svcd.

Posted by Whitenigga on 12-21-2002 11:41 AM:

oh yes, my friend has a couple of years old sony dvdplayer (i don't remember the model) It also refuses to play vcd's & svcd's.

Only "HP That's Write" -cdrs work with that machine, other medias won't work. not in vcd nor audio.
So, that player sucks. But old is old... New Sony technology rocks

i cliked that amazon.com link fer the apex, and it sez nothing about svcd vcd or ne thin. i'm fairly new to this prolly a month now...so does the description not have to say svcd vcd xvcd or ne thin like that fer it to play them? wut must it say?

Posted by cameronsdad on 12-30-2002 07:28 PM:

All apexs made after april 2002 do not play vcd's they do still play svcd I would recomend you get the mintek 1600 wich plays both and has better picture quality than the apex.

Samsung models like my p401, with progress scan, are excellent. Your gonna pay a little more, but my dvd-p401 plays everything except divx, and will play every type of cheap-ass media I through at it including CompUSA 100 pack, no label, cheapo cds!

And the remote rocks too!
