Review: Gangs Of New York

In Martin Scorsese's latest film, Gangs Of New York, we're taken back to New York City in 1864. In a time of war, the abolishment of slavery, and lots of blood being shed on the streets between Irish immigrants and so called American Natives. The movie opens as Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson), the leader of the Irish gang Dead Rabbits, engages in a bloody battle fought against William ''Bill the Butcher'' Cutting's (Daniel Day-Lewis) gang, the Native Americans. The battle ends with Bill killing Priest in front of the eyes of young Amsterdam Vallon(Leonardo DiCaprio). Sixteen years pass as Amsterdam grows up in an orphanage, but he's not forgotten his father's murder and the blood still remains on the blade. Befriending his father's killer, Amsterdam becomes Bill's right hand man and helps him to establish boxing matches and riots around the town. But Amsterdam's cannot hide from his past and his identity is revealed to Bill. A challenge is then made to settle for once and for all who is the most powerful gang in New York, the foreign hordes, or the American natives.

Acting was absolutely exquisite, this is especially true for Daniel Day-Lewis, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen him in a film. The sets and cinematography were also top notch and allowed for a further immersion into the film. The sense of corruption and constant allusions to the civil war exemplified the problems of the time. Character development was strong and helped to bring meaning to the movie's weak ending. But all said and done. Excellent film.

Just I'm a bit suspicious about Leonardo Di Caprio

One time, my cousin Walter got this cat stuck in his ass. True story. He bought it at our local mall so the whole fiasco wound up on the news, it was embarrassing for my relatives and all, but the next week he did it again, different cat, same results, complete with another trip to the emergency room! So I run into him a week later in the mall and he’s buying another cat and I says to ‘em "Jesus Walt, what are you doing? You know your just gonna get this cat stuck up your ass too, why don’t you knock it off?" And he says to me "Brodie, how the hell else am I supposed to get the gerbil out?" My cousin was a weird guy....

Yeah, right... and I suppose it's nomination for the best motion picture by the globes and possible Oscar nomination is nothing compared to your 5 word review.

its not that the movie was really terrible, compared to other bad movies latley.

What really makes it stand out as a turd, is the potential you see in the incredible sets/costumes, and the setting itself is fantastic.

The fact is, that with this great a story, and with martin scorsese's reputation, hollywood was still incapable of creating a memorable film.

Dicaprio is made of wood, he was carved out of a coconut tree by a homosexual stranded on a deserted isle, and later brought to hollywood by Bob Denver who was trying to get into his role by surrounding himself with south pacific souvenirs. Somewhere along the line a rabbi got the bright idea of animating him so he could save full house and go on to portray a wonderful retard.

Another bad thing about him and diaz is that when they are in a movie, it is no longer the writer/directer 's vision that your seeing, it is also partly a vehicle to enhance Leo and Cameran's public image.

Thank you Mike Ovitz.

Seriously if someone took that guy out, you would see the quality of movies and tv shows skyrocket.

___SPOILER_____

Notice how when bill discovers who vallan is, all he does is give him an attractive scar on his face, which really goes the extra mile to make him look like a toughguy while not at all detracting from his boyish good looks.

MARTY SOLD HIS SOUL, BUT HE DIDDNT NEED THE MONEY

I think someone's got some interesting pictures if you get my drift . . .

--All New--Official Gangs of New York Movie Review--

Due to popular demand, and my being a part of imdb.com, I decided to come back. Also my friends who stood up for me here, convinced me I should come back.

Happy New Year Everyone----

Director Martin Scorscese's epic action drama, set in the late 1800's marks one of the best films I believe of 2002, and the improbable oscar nominations for Liam Neeson and Daniel Day Lewis, and Leonardo DiCaprio isn't too bad either, in a film that I believe will spark more "Epic Drama's" to hit theatres near you.

In what I consider the most violent openning for a film, the Irish Gang, "The Dead Rabbitts", lead by Priest Vallon (played by Neeson), finds the impended war with the Nativist leader, nicknamed "The Butcher." (Lewis) is inevitable.

They battle for control of the streets of New York City, 1863, winding up in Priest's son, Amsterdam (later played by DiCaprio) witnessing his father's murder.

Sent away to reform school, Amsterdam returns to the streets of New York City 16 years later, with hatred for the man who murdered his father.

His plan, simply get close to the Butcher, through a number of allies, including a pickpocket played by Cameron Diaz, and enact the revenge that had fueled him.

Gangs is New York is indeed 2 Hours and 50 minutes long, and the film has a lot of violence, and for the male hormones, a lot of nudity, sorry none by Cameron though, but she has a good sexual scene with Leo that should satisfy some.

I liked Gangs very much, and hope that it gets some Oscar Consideration.

Gangs of New York is rated 'R' for graphic violence, language, and extreme nudity.

My rating: 9.75 out of 10.

Happy New Year Everyone!!
