Has the site slowed down recently?

About a week ago, this site got a lot slower for me & my cable modem. Even the nfo's take a little while to load. HAS ANYONE ELSE noticed this, or is it just me? Other than a single ftp site, there's been no other speed drops anywhere else for me.

Thanks, VCDQ is #1.

Lightbulb PHP Caching

I've only recently found this site, but I have noticed periods of extreme lag here and there.

Have you thought about caching results to improve performance?
The front page need not be updated everytime a person views the site because its contents are not changing every second. Its results can be cached and retrieved without hitting up the database. That along with gzip compression can speed things along.

Look into phpcache or some other caching systems like the ones used at PEAR.

According to the phpcache website, it can also help ease server load on this forum as well.

I used to cache the site >6 months ago.. but that was very limiting in what i could do with the site..
The front page does need to be generated on the fly for every user because I now show new releases since users the last visit. i'm using some heap tables (memory tables) that are updated every few mins instead of reading directly out of the disk based database..
and i've been using mod_gzip for ever.. bandwith would be INSANE without it..

this is "THE" site for a comprehensive database. popularity has both ups and downs. down when it gets overloaded by popularity
but the good side is when you see your favorite new films been released. especially with the still sample nfo and reviews this is a pretty well run site i look forward to the coming year ahead

well mostly becuse lately there been this "hype" of sites/sections shut down by RiAA mpg or whatever they are called.. i am acctully starting to think _why_ / _how_ this site still is online.. its very great and cool.. btw vcdquality have been mentioned in the local papers few times here to.

Posted by memoman on 01-04-2003 09:22 PM:

maybee as it is such a focus for groups and uses that they can sit in their offices on their fat arses and have the site feed them imformation freely

Posted by X69 on 01-05-2003 05:26 AM:

cut out news paper articles and send em to me.. i'll scan em and post em on the site..

theres a difference in being able to shut someone down, and wanting to shut someone down. we do absolutely nothing here thats illegal.. we're like a newspaper in the fact we report things that have happened in the past.

personally, i think its a bit more positive to report about the ability to say "fuck hollywood!" and not have to pay for the shit it produces, and encouraging people to use their money to see the quality films instead, rather than talk about people being raped and murdered. but thats just me.
