r.e
I have not got a dvd writer at the moment but the two models which have decent reviews are on the Sony DRU500A and the Pioneer DVR-A05. If the DVD+R becomes standard then the Sony has the edge as it does both DVD-R and DVD+R.

I have a pioneer 104 and it's fine. I can burn a normal xbox game in 30 min., or a full dvd-r movie in about 25 min. You can also fine the 104 about $100 cheaper now than the 105 if your not interested in the top speed or whatever. As for writing both - and + dvds, I think it is unnecessary. Unless dvd+r becomes the standard (which i don't think it will) there is no use for it.
sony 500dru firmware problem and they were all recalled at christmas, now back in circulation after prob sorted but hard to get till feb. it will take a year to sort out +/- format so is it worth the wait for a sony or get something done with a pioneer as in 12 month it will be obsolete then as the speed of writing will have gone up by then.hope this helps you

we got a pioneer 104 at work (at home at the mnoment though
)
im gonna buy the sony when i get enough cash.
also had problems with the bulkpaq disks.
teach me to be a tightarse and buy the cheapest disks
