Thumbs up Review: Blue Crush (2002)

Blue Crush
imdb link : ?0300532
imdb rating : 5.6/10 (1,256 votes)

theres only a few commercial films about surfing.. probably the most famous being Point Break, and thats not really a surfing film, just a film that happens to have people surfing in it. Blue Juice is a british film starring Ewan McGregor (amongst others) which took a more gritty and realistic approach to the surfing ideal.

and now we get the similarly titled "Blue Crush". from the very first second you start watching, you know that realism is pretty much thrown away, and its just a 'feel good' movie. fair enough, i can handle that, but it'll probably put some people off im sure.

ok, the story.. well it was never going to be complex. girl nearly drowns in accident (which is never really explained other than thru the same flashback sequence thats overshown thru out the movie) 3 years previous, girl enters surfing contest, boys think girl is a 'barbie', girl falls in love with some football player and pushes contest aside, girl regains confidence to enter competition. its not shakespeare, but that doesn't make it bad.

the main thing about this film is the supreme photography. sure it could be classed as "MTV style" but that doesn't make it bad. some of the in water shots are fabulous, and it amazes me how well they were able to pull off most of the surf shots. now im no surf expert, but those are some pretty damn big waves, and whoever was in them (whether actress or stunt double) did a fantastic job, especially considering some of the bails. the movie WORKS. so eye candy (hey, this is a movie about surf *girls* dont forget too!) is awesome. storyline is average but not pretending to be something else, and the acting is of a decent enough standard.

personally, i enjoyed the film, i think the average imdb score is a bit low, as compared to a lot of the other 'popcorn flicks' recently, this seems oscar worthy, and hell its a short movie that is pulled off well.

the ending is better than 99% of the others out there whilst not being particularly inspired, but at least it doesn't fall into the usual trap of teen films and shows the screenplay was written with a bit more care than the usual dross we're forced to watch.

few criticisms in the fact the last 15mins seems a bit "samey", the same events seem to occur a few times in a row which is a bit annoying, but hey! who cares. just watch it once, stick it in the pile and pull it out sometime in the future whilst bored.

7/10 . Definitely worth a try. You'll know within the first 10minutes if this isn't the movie for you.

I'm sorry, but I hated this movie... to me the plot was bland and boring, the acting was medicore, and there werent even hot babes to make up for all the boringness.

4/10

cause blue crush sucked.

compare it to utter shite like The Hot Chick, Extreme Ops and Stealing Harvard and you'll see what i mean. its a fun enough film, and the photography is excellent. i watched it at 2am with nothing else to do, and i didnt turn it off so that says something

remember, im rating it 7/10 in accordance to other films of this genre. im not saying that its an awesome film, but if you like films like this, you could do a lot worse. im always open to films from foreign/arthouse/limited flicks to hollywood shite, and as hollywood shite goes this is a lot better than most. M:I 2 anyone? eww!

Unhappy

7/10 = "oscar worthy"

what does that mean exactly??

99% of all the movies made do not have inspired endings?
or
99% of all movie endings dont compare with Greatness of blue crush???

read it again ..

that means the quality of the recent popcorn style flicks (ie films with no meaning , just 90mins of 'fun') has been so poor, this looks like an oscar film in comparison, not that it deserves an oscar.

and by the ending i mean that 99% of films follow the same bullshit triumphant ending that you can see a mile away. personally i didn't think she'd win the contest, and the director made the right choice by making her lose. if she'd had won, it would've just been the usual teenmovie-by-numbers where the 'hero/heroine' always comes out on top. in this film she simply overcame her fear, rather than won the whole thing.

im not saying its a wonderful film, im just saying its better than most of the crap in this genre.

I just dont buy into the whole teen genre thing or "popcorn flicks" anymore.

I think every movie can be placed in one of these genres

1. comedy
2. black comedy
3. action
4. drama
5. horror
6. fantasy
7. sci-fi
8. doc

the whole teen genre thing just seems to me to be a sterotype used to say a movie really just sucked ass.

To say a movie just sucked a little less ass because its in the suck ass genre is a copout.

ps
im debating w/ myself wether B-movies should have their own genre?

Posted by pHo on 01-09-2003 06:50 PM:

not necessarily, a lot of films can be placed under Teen Comedy or something, for example most of the national lampoons films, american pie, porkys etc.

also, whats wrong with a film that just wastes 90mins of your life? not every films needs to be deep and meaningful, and not every film needs to be trashy, its nice to have the choice. i'd never compare a film like Blue Crush to The Seventh Seal or anything, but that doesn't mean its not worth watching.

I disagree comedy only works if the person watching it is smart enough to get the joke. To say that teen comedy is a genre is basically sayen that teen agers 13-19 in general are less intelligent audience members wich could be true but a 7 year time peroid just seems to broad for the classification of a genre. Hence the sterotype.

The movies mentioned above are teen orianted, they deal in the most part w/ issues teens face, wants, desires, and what not and alot of the characters are in fact teenagers.
but
physcial comedy they rely on to get a laugh is a style of comedy none the less.

I just dont see why alot of movies be it drama, comedy, fatasy, sci-fi couldnt be considered teen movies.
And the only reason i come up w/ is that they are for the most part quality films.
like spiderman
if this movie would have sucked it would have been without a doubt classified as a teen film rather than fantasy
??maybe comic adaptations should have their own genre too hmmmm

Posted by pHo on 01-09-2003 10:00 PM:

its nothing to do with intelligence, its target audience.

Posted by bobbystill on 01-10-2003 12:25 AM:

well thats my point.
alot of films are geared for that target audience but only the ones that really suck ass end up w/ the teen genre stigma.

for example Fucking Åmål (1998)
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0150662
great movie- no sterotype
but still with out a doubt a "teen-film"

Just because blue crush was better than extreme ops or the hot chick doesnt make it a good movie....
