Subtitles on SVCD

Hello,

I have a question, is it possible to permantently put subtitles into SVCD movies like lotr 2, than burn them on a cd and play them on your region-free svcd supportable stand alone dvd player?

If it is, can anyone write down what program you need for it?

I got a similar problem.
I have a vcd in english and a .srt subtitles file in italian.
I have seen that all the guides in internet explain how to add subtitles on vcd starting from an avi file but i have not found nothing about adding subtitles directly on a vcd or mpeg file.
Can i add permanent subtitles on vcd without converting it in avi?
