Review: Interstate 60 (2003)

Interstate 60 (2003) Review by George Peppard.

After being responsible for one of the biggest movies ever made; Bob Gale, creator of Back To The Future makes his debut as a director with the delightful independent movie Interstate 60. For a debut movie, this does not fail to disappoint.

Interstate 60 is a weird mish-mash of often complex, diverse and often very weird storytelling. Playing out as a sort of feature length episode of The Twilight Zone the movie follows the trials and tribulations of Neal Oliver (played by James Marsden of X-Men 2 and Zoolander) and his search for 'an answer'. Unbeknownst to Neal his wish is about to come true, but in the strangest, kookiest and most undoubtably weird way.

Neal eventually ends up 'seeking his answer' by travelling a road that doesn't exist. That road is Interstate 60. Along the way we meet a handful of odd, yet likeable charachters and situations. Things don't run as smoothly as expected for Neal and his road trip is somewhat complicated to say the least!

Both writing and directing this movie, Gale uses all of his past expertise and pours it all in to this movie. The storytelling is well paced and simply delightful. At times it's just pure unadultarated escapism, others it plays out as a fairytale. The aforementioned Twilight Zone style insanity also mixes in superbly with the rest of the movie.

You have to weigh up a lot of different aspects to this movie to summarise one exclusive rating. It's low budget, it's an indy movie, it's a directors debut, it's well shot, the score is heart warming yet well fitted to the movie and the acting is totally on par with any big heavyweight Oscar fatboy. Talking of which, i cannot pass up the opportunity to name-drop some of the quality names starring in this movie; Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Gary Oldman, Amy Smart and more unknown, yet good value names.

At the end of the day, although i loved this movie, i think it really is an aquired taste, mainly on the strength that some people are imbeciles and cannot sit and enjoy an independent movie. The Twilight Zone esque nods may not be to everyones liking, but as a fan of this whole 'style' of genre i couldn't help but fall in love with it.

Interstate 60 is certainly a new wave in road trip movies. A refreshing change to a tired genre and i loved every minute of it.

Final Score: 10/10 ''It began as a wish, became an adventure, and ended as the ultimate road trip.''

no thats what i call high budget hollywood.. (i would insert dross here, but this is one of the few exceptions where it 'appears' (i haven't seen it yet) to be a good film) the fact you even compare the two is ridiculous.

LOL MG. I know i so wanted to give this movie a 10. For me personally it is a 10/10 movie. But if i gave it a 10 then 1. people would call me biased. I'm not. If this movie was a piece of shit i would have said so. 2. it's an indy movie. people hate indy movies but i had to discredit it 0.5 marks for this as i knew it would affect some poeple.

Oh, and can you review Chicago pweeeeeze?

this movie was sheer brillance, it was smart, funny and fun, i defintlly agree 100% with your review MS!

this movie was amazing. i wasn't sure what to expect but since so many people were talking about it in the chan on efnet i decided to see it and i'm glad i did.

on another note, this is one of the few movies that really made me feel good watching it, i was depressed for a couple days but after watching this movie, as strang as it may sound, it completely cheered me up and gave me a new vision in life, new goals and such. it speaks volumes when a movie can actually touch someones life

SINZAR, i completely agree.. it left a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart when i saw this..

i disagree with MS though... it's a 10, who cares if you think i'm biased, or you hate indy movies.. this is one of the most enjoyable movies i've ever seen, the guy who hates liars is fucking hilarious, O.W. Grant is a fun and inventive character... and the movie gave me a new outlook on life... that anything and everything will happen.. got me a new phrase

"In an Infinite Universe given Infinite Time, Everything will happen."

YAY! Everyone loves Interstate 60! *claps and jumps up and down*

K i'm changing it to a 10/10.

I only gave it 9.5 because i thought people would whine at me and say "oh your so biased" etc.

I was gonna give it a 10 in the first place. So now i will.
