Review: One Hour Photo (2002)

Review based off of: retail DVD, widescreen edition.

One Hour Photo is an awesome movie. I found it to be thrilling, terrifying, exciting, and suspenseful. Well acted and written, too.

Robin Williams plays his part fabulously. He is an amazing actor, and once again proves he is not constrained to comedic roles exclusively. The rest of the cast performs well, too. The acting in this film is amazing, all around.

The best performance is of course Robin Williams as Sy. He seems like a friendly photo receptionist at first, but as the film progresses, we discover his terrifying secrets. He suffers from lonelyness; he has no friends or family. So, he becomes obsessed with the family of one of his customers.

The family seems pretty normal. A mother, a father, and a son. Sy feels as if he knows this family, and in a way, he does. He has developed their photos for years. However, the father, William Yorkin, like Sy, also has a secret, and when Sy discovers the truth, he takes things into his own hands. This is where the movie gets exciting.

William Yorkin and Sy Parish, in my opinion, aren't bad guys, but simply human. They both make the wrong decisions, and end up having to live with the consequences of them. However, I think Sy is a better person. He isn't a bad guy, he just got involved with and tried to change things that weren't his business. And the way he went about doing this was both wrong and illegal.

Overall, this movie is a great thriller. However, don't expect to laugh, or even smile. Instead, expect to be terrified. Williams' role as Sy will send chills down your back. While not for everyone, One Hour Photo should appeal to anyone looking for a good thriller/drama.

One Hour Photo is rated R for language and nudity. (though it should be appropriate for ages 15 and up)
