Question say what? movie industry losing $$ to piracy?

think about it. nightline ran a special not too long ago about media piracy, claiming the movie industry has their panties in a bunch because people know how to get movies off the net. if you asked me, the industry gains money instead of losing it--now hear me out.

we all know that pirated movies are at least reduced in quality in some way. many of which have significant downsampled picture and audio streams, exept for some dvd-rs. even on the dvd-rs it's usually a dvdscreener with warnings strewn throughout the rls. either way, the point is youre not getting the full quality movie. now let me ask you how many people download a movie so they don't have to buy it? think about it, i seriously doubt anyone downloads a dvdscreener rip and then decides just because he got that that he won't buy the dvd when it comes out. i'd bet dollars to pay that almost everyone who pirates movies actually buys the movie when they come out--the only point to downloading them is to see them in the 3 month period when you can't see them or buy them, and for bragging rights to your friends

so how does the industry GAIN money? well, i like to think of pirated movies as screeners (lol). if i'm not sure if i want to see a movie, i dl it and screen it. on many occasions i've screened a movie and decided it was worth the 8 bucks and went down and saw it. in fact, unless i'm absolutely sure i will like it i never watch a movie without screening it, because way too many times have i gone to a movie to find out i just wasted all that money.

at any rate, the "fact" that the movie industry is losing money due to piracy is at least in part, a lie. any other thoughts?

bad post, the general population gets it from kazaa, and are 8 year old little boys that do it to be cool.

A lot of money is lost in non-domestic exhibition, I.E. before some movies are even released in the U.K. or other parts of Europe a screener is out. In Asia where piracy is rampant it's almost impossible to exhibit pictures. Why would you wait months just for a flick to hit the cinemas when you could walk down to the corner and get it for a quarter of the cost?

As per the quality of flicks, yes it's always going to be nicer to see movies in auditoriums equipped solely for exhibition purposes, but obviously that hasn't stopped people from watching them at home. Technology’s been getting increasingly better in the scene over the past years, and if NATO actually does implement digital projection by the end of this year we’re looking at a LOT of changes in the scene . Some pirates might buy final product, but I for one haven't purchased a movie ticket or bought a DVD in over three years, I have however gone through countless spindles of CD-R's and have begun evaporating my DVD-R supply.

Using pirate movie's as promotional screeners can go both ways. Like you said, if you like the movie you're inclined to go and watch it, but what if it sucks, you still going to plunk down 8 bucks for a movie you’ve already seen?

nope. but that's the movie industry's fault for trying to trick us into watching a movie that sucks. honestly ... I have felt so gipped by some movies. because even if you walk out, you've already paid the money. in most cases when I watch stuff that I've downloaded, I can tell in 15 minutes whether I'm going to like it, and so I just turn it off if I don't. if I do, I'll generally go down to the theater and watch it with friends. in fact, that's the major reason I download -- so that I can always recommend good movies to friends.
