BTTF was filmed in a soft matte format where the full frame is "matted" (covered, 'black bars' on the top and bottom) to achieve a widescreen ratio. When the film is released on Pan & Scan, the film is unmatted...

With the BTTFs, the special effects were filmed with a "hard matte", meaning the 'black bars' were unremovable. The rest of the shots, however, were filmed with a "soft matte" - which is where the bars are put in place later on.

The widescreen contains the same amount of picture that people saw in theaters (aside from the messed-up 2 minutes in part II and 4 minutes in part III), but in non-special effects shots the fullscreen version will have a small amount of extra picture on the top and bottom, and less picture horizontally in special effects shots.
