Review: AFI - Sing the Sorrow 2003

A Fire Inside, or as their more commonly known, AFI, has been one of the groundbreaking Punk groups for many years. Sing the Sorrow marks the end of those days, and the beggining of something new. Prior to this, AFI had been a Rags to Richs story. Starting in a garage, and working thier asses to get to the plateau they're at now, really shows an exceptional level of skill on thier part.

This new CD is an example of this skill. It has a bit more of a "skremo" feel to it, similar to bands like Thursday, The Used, or Finch. Inspite of the new sound, AFI still pulls this album through to be a well-put together piece of work. Amazing tracks like "Miseria Cantara" and "Bleed Black" filled with nothing but in your face incesent rockage, and other, more calm tracks like "Silver and Cold" or "The Great Dissapointment" prove that these guys have a normally unobtainable range of skill to entertain at multiple levels.

Parts of this album are weaker than otheres, specific tracks are less intriguing than others, but overall is a real step of experiance for this group, and is obviously the brainchild of many hours of work, exeperimentation, and dedication. With 2 more records left on thier deal, we can be expecting alot more of the same entertaining, talent-filled, albums by this extremely underated band.

FINAL RATING
7.5 / 10

Stand-Out Track(s)
1. Miseria Cantara (The Beggining)
4. Silver and Cold

He bought it at our local mall so the whole fiasco wound up on the news, it was embarrassing for my relatives and all, but the next week he did it again, different cat, same results, complete with another trip to the emergency room! So I run into him a week later in the mall and he’s buying another cat and I says to ‘em "Jesus Walt, what are you doing? You know your just gonna get this cat stuck up your ass too, why don’t you knock it off?" And he says to me "Brodie, how the hell else am I supposed to get the gerbil out?" My cousin was a weird guy....

punk rock is gay....you abandon your band after they have a fanbase greater than their parents and you and 4 of your friends...i will never understand.

punk rock is gay... i hate punk with a passion. but when they call themselves "east bay hardcore" and then they put out a shitty pop like album, thats what makes them sell out to me. i mean black sails the sunset... words cant even begin to describe how good that was. and halloween, classic. but when they came out with the art of drowning, it went downhill. then sing the sorrows... i dont know what happened.

they changed. progressed. it happens. I just posted in another thread moaning about how linkin park rehashed their first album. guess there're people who don't want bands to change.

I like to call it "progressive" punk rock. I thoroughly enjoyed the album
