Entertainment News-6/4/03 (Indiana Jones, Devil May Cry, Family Guy)

Indiana Jones IV
Harrison Ford told SCI FI Wire that Frank Darabont has completed his script for a proposed fourth Indiana Jones movie. "Steven [Spielberg]'s quite happy with it," Ford said in an interview. "I'm expecting to see it in a couple of weeks."Ford added that he worked closely with director Spielberg, Darabont and executive producer George Lucas on the story. "The way the process works is that George and Frank work together, then Steven gets the script, then I get the script, and we all work together. We all met together and talked about it before they started writing." Ford said that he remains eager to reprise his most famous role because of fans' demands for a fourth installment in the franchise. "It pleases me to play a character that audiences want to see," he said. "I know that it's eagerly anticipated, and I want us to do a good job, make a film at least as good as the ones we've made before." The fourth as-yet-untitled Indy movie is slated to begin filming in the summer of 2004, with an eye to a July 2005 release. (From: http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-...6/03/12.15.film)

Devil May Cry News
In the latest of a string of game-to-film adaptations, arcade game maker Capcom and distributor Gaga Communications have concluded a film option deal for Devil May Cry, a Capcom game series that has sold 4.37 million units internationally. According the terms of the deal Gaga, will have exclusive rights to produce a film version of the game, together with Hollywood partners, for worldwide distribution. Capcom and Gaga previously announced a similar deal for Onimusha, another popular Capcom game, with 4.8 million units sold. Devil May Cry is an action game whose half-human, half-demon hero, Dante, battles demons in the human world together with his female companion Lucia. The game has been a huge hit in North America and Capcom intends to exploit this popularity with a major Hollywood film. The estimated budget for the film is $40m, with a planned release date of 2005. Capcom and Gaga will announce the director, cast and Hollywood distributor in the course of development. In addition to Devil May Cry and Onimusha, Capcom is the developer of Resident Evil, which director Paul Anderson made into a film of the same title starring Milla Jovovich. Since its release last year Resident Evil has grossed $140 million worldwide. A leading independent producer in Japan, Gaga is now eyeing similar film option deals for Japanese games, animation and comics. (From: http://www.screendaily.com/story.asp?storyid=12718)

Family Guy: The Movie
Bikkit reports that the cancelled FOX adult animated comedy could be making a comeback. The three-season long show ran on Fox from 1999-2001 but was pulled due to low ratings which weren't helped by an unstable airing schedule - since then however the studio has been very impressed with both the first wave of DVD sales and Cartoon Network re-run ratings, so much so that a direct-to-DVD feature-length new movie is being considered by creator Seth MacFarlane. Seth told Variety that "It's certainly some vindication and a sign that the show is as popular as we always suspected. Fox certainly gave the show more of a chance than a lot of shows would've gotten, and we're indebted to Gail [Berman, Fox Entertainment Chief] for the fact that we even got a third season. But it's also frustrating for everyone who worked on the show. We all felt it was killed before its time". Fox will release a second batch of episodes on disc later this Fall. Hughes will be played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett will star as Katharine Hepburn; Kate Beckinsale will appear as Ava Gardner; Adam Scott Johnny Meyer; Kelli Garner as Faith Domergue, and Gwen Stefani as Jean Harlow.

Brittany Murphy News
Murphy (8 Mile, Spun, Sidewalks of New York, dreck with Ashton Klutcher) will star in two films for Warner Brothers. She will star in the comedy "Major Movie Star" and the 3D-Animation Film for Village Roadshow called "Happy Feet" (Director: George Miller) Major Movie Star follows the life of a pop singer who wants to star in a studio's film set in the military. To prove that she can act, Murphy enlists in the army.

Disney Musical
The Walt Disney Company has picked up the music script "A Capella" from Matt and Billy Eddy. The story follows a group of "eclectic misfits who re-form their disbanded a cappella singing group." Sounds like fun...

Ice Cube Feature Picks Up Director
Brian Levant (Snow Dogs, Jingle All The Way, The Flinstones, Problem Child 2) has signed up to direct "Are We There Yet?" Ice Cube is set to produce the project, which follows Ice Cube as Nick, a playboy bachelor and sports memorabilia collector dating a divorced mother of two. In the film, Nick offers his date to pick up her two kids, who he's never met. And of course, the kids try to give Nick a hard time. Looks dumb...

This is fairly interesting to me. I liked family guy and i watch it all the time. I wish that they didnt take it off. I hope they do release the movie and well make it first.

Indiana Jones should be a pretty good movie THOUGH i dont know how good and how Harrison Ford will play in it since he is pretty old isnt he?

Harrison Ford will be 60 during the shooting of Indy IV. But could you see anyone else play the part like him. I would watch Indy at 80. Ford is just that good and he says he has a stunt or two left in him. The guy is in great shape. Did you see his abs in What LIes Beneath? You don't get those lying around. I can't wait for Indy IV. Wish they would make a lot more with him and Connery. The Last Crusade was definitely my favorite.

Marvel's LUKE CAGE gets optioned by SPIDER-MAN studio

Luke Cage has found a home.

Marvel Comics' hero for hire (well, one-half of the team if you also count his sometimes partner Iron Fist) has been optioned by Columbia Pictures, the same studio behind SPIDER-MAN. The project is being developed by Neal Moritz (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS and his Original Films company. Writer Ben Ramsey (LOVE AND A BULLET, THE BIG HIT) will pen the screenplay.

The character of Luke Cage has super-strength and invulnerability, received as a result of a medical experiment while he was incarcerated in prison. Considered one of Marvel's most popular black superheroes, Cage eventually escaped from prison and turned his life around, becoming a hero for his old neighborhood. It's unknown how much of the movie's screenplay will mirror the character's comic book origins.

One interesting factoid: this is the same comic book character where star Nicolas Cage borrowed his surname for his professional name. The star of THE ROCK and WINDTALKERS is a huge comic book fan.

Superheroes vs. Sharkslayers
Disney and DreamWorks are going toe-to-toe again

It's no secret around Hollywood that there's a strong rivalry between the animation sections of Disney and DreamWorks. DW's president of animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg, used to be Michael Eisner's right-hand man at the Mouse House a decade ago before Katzenberg left to form his own movie studio. And once again, tensions between the two companies are heating up again.

DreamWorks CG underwater adventure, SHARKSLAYER, had been taargeting a November 5, 2004 release date and everyone working in the biz knew it. But with the release of Disney's trailer for THE INCREDIBLES, their new CG superhero flick, everyone's learned of Disney's intent to release their picture on the same day that SHARKSLAYER opens.

On a purely business level, Disney's decision to release INCREDIBLES on this day can be perceived as a slap to the face to DreamWorks. Both are expensive animated projects using computer generated imagery to produce their visuals, and both will undoubtedly have large merchandising and promotional deals with third party companies all seeking the eyes of the general public. What it all comes down to is which film will get bragging rights as the number one picture at the box office the first weekend of their release.

Either studio could blink and shuffle the intended release date for their movie, but that decision could be perceived by the public as a sign of weakness in the material. SHARKSLAYER has a impressive cast list of voice talent including Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie and Renée Zellweger, while the vocal talent for THE INCREDIBLES hasn't been released. Still, FINDING NEMO which starred the voices of Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres, not exactly A-list mega celebrities, debuted at number one at the box office this past weekend. Pixar and Disney don't seem to be worried.

Pixar`s INCREDIBLES

The teaser trailer for Pixar Animation Studios next picture, Brad Bird's THE INCREDIBLES, is now online. The movie parodies life as a superhero and is set for release on November 5, 2004. The trailer comes in four sizes, including a full-screen version for your eyeballs to enjoy.

HOUSE OF THE DEAD finds a home
So does ALONE IN THE DARK

Artisan Pictures has announced that it has picked up North American distribution rights for the already filmed HOUSE OF THE DEAD and soon-to-be-filmed ALONE IN THE DARK horror movies. HOUSE OF THE DEAD, based on the SEGA video game series, is now scheduled for a Fall 2003 release; principal photography on ALONE IN THE DARK starts in July. A release date for ALONE hasn't been announced.

HOUSE OF THE DEAD, written by Dave Parker and Mark Altman, stars Jurgen Prochnow (DAS BOOT), Clint Howard (APOLLO 13), Ellie Cornell (HALLOWEEN 4) and Jonathan Cherry (FINAL DESTINATION 2). Prochnow plays a boat captain who transports a group of young adults over to a island only to find that the dead are waiting for them. The kids weekend rave soon turns into their personal grave.

Lancelot rides to the side of KING ARTHUR
Actor played Horatio Hornblower

Ioan Gruffudd, the star of the most recent HORATIO HORNBLOWER mini-series, has been cast as the knight Lancelot in Jerry Bruckheimer's KING ARTHUR movie. Gruffudd also starred in BLACK HAWK DOWN and 102 DALMATIONS.

KING ARTHUR will be directed by Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and tells the story of Arthur and the legendary knights of the Round Table in a realistic fashion with no magic or supernatural elements. The story will focus on the political and personal relationships forged and torn apart by Arthur (played by Clive Owen) in 5th century Britain. Keira Knightly (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) plays Arthur's queen, Guinevere, while Stephan Dillane (SPY GAME) serves as the King's advisor, Merlin.

Jack Black is RAD BRAD
The world's best video game player

New Line Cinema ponied up some cash for a new comedy pitch from Philip Stark (DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR?) titled RAD BRAD, MODERN WARRIOR. Jack Black (SHALLOW HAL) is attached to star as the character, deemed the world's best video game player. When a robot with superhuman powers goes awry, the rogue military division that created the mechanical monster ask Rad to save the world. Really, I swear that's the storyline that Hollywood Reporter published!

Black also had a hand in developing the idea with Stark, who will now write the script for New Line.

And in the "I Can't Wait To See What The Hell This Is" Catagory

SILVERFISH sells
It's a modern day gladiator script

It sounds like FIGHT CLUB meets GLADIATOR with a dash of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK added for atmosphere. That's the idea behind SILVERFISH, a new action screenplay that's just sold to Splendid Pictures. Written by first-timer Neil Elman, the story is about prisoners who get handpicked from incarceration to fight in modern-day gladiator arenas set up on the isle of Manhattan. The matches are set up by a gambling ring who also conditions the cons, teaching them how to inflict maximum damage using martial arts.

Why is it called SILVERFISH? That's a good question. I'm sure there's a reason.

Splendid Pictures is the company behind THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER, Alec Baldwin's directorial debut that's now trapped in post-production hell, awaiting funds for completion. They are also the company who brought us POOLHALL JUNKIES, NARC and are in development on DOLAN'S CADILLAC starring Kevin Bacon and Sylvester Stallone.

Paramount Orders More TREKKIES

Paramount has given a greenlight to TREKKIES 2, a follow up to the 1997 documentary. The original documentary's principals - director Roger Nygard, host/executive producer Denise Crosby and producer Mike Leahy - will return. The sequel will venture abroad to visit STAR TREK fans, as well as looking back at some of those fans that appeared in the original docu. Two of the featured fan boys will be Spock of Germany and a man who turned his London flat into the bridge of the Enterprise.
