Thumbs down Metallica - St. Anger

Being sold as Metallica 'reinventing' Rock & Roll, but at the same time being a revisit to the Black Album, everyone has high expectation for Metallicas St. Anger. Unfortunately, the album sounds too much like a back to basics for me to enjoy.

Every song is sounding the same to me, a clash of guitar that is reminiscent of Chong, of Cheech and Chong, using a wrench as his pick. I hear no reinvention of the wheel in the songs, in fact the only song on the album I thoroughly enjoyed was Frantic.

Black album is celebrated because of the songs being unlike anything rock had heard. Nothing Else matters with it's hard verses, and soft chorus, and other songs gave rock a new image. St. Anger seems to be Metallica trying too hard to be the forefathers of Rocks new era, and in my opinion, they've failed.

Rating: 3/5 - So much distortion guitar I feel dirty.

I agree, this album is bollocks. I hoped it would be good, but alas, too many duffers on here for my liking.

I disagree with ya'll

Not one time did any band member say this cd was gonna be vintage metallica, Its not. They did what everyone wanted they made a heavy cd and brought it up to age with other bands, they exelled in my opinion. I was expecting a shit cd like Reload, or Load but its on par with the black album which i loved. This cd is no where near Master of puppets even though Its a hell of a lot better than I was expecting. Metallica the group has changed there not gonna be like they were back in the 80's which isn't always a bad thing. No one can say this cd is near as bad as reload, I love metallica I couldn't listen to all of reload, this cd so far i've listend to about 5 times since i got it yesterday, well last night.

I give this cd 3 1/2 stars out of 4 its awesome, Its heavy, its just awesome. but hey thats my opinion.

I liked every metallica CD right up to re-load (load took a little getting used to), and even on re-load I could pick out a few unique songs I liked... I just listened to St. Anger, the guitar riffs sound good, he screams a little much in the vocals and the drums kind of sound like they are banging on steel barrells. I am sure I will find a few songs to take a liking to on this CD, however, it is definately no classic Metallica album where every song was good and could be listened to for years to come.

it's a bit crap, really ain't it?

I had hope for this, i really did, but they did nothing new, which isn't a bad thing if the stuff you DO do is good, but it's all a but average. not what a band like metallica should be pumping out, for sure.

This CD has nothing to do with bringing it to the current age, Metallica was trying to be the Martyr in making a new age of rock and it all sounds the same.

Well for Metallica they did something new, they made it heavy. It's different than any other Metallica CD. I'm not looking for reasons to like it or dislike it. Exept it for what it is. That's all i'm saying.

Did you like it at all? you gave it kinda high ratings if you didn't like it at all. 3/5 which isn't great, I would say just above average.

They went with a different sound in which alot of people may not like. like you said distorted guitar, I know exactly what you mean, one reason i like alot of metal is exactly that.

Don't tax there gig so harcore dudez

i love most types of metal. thrash metal, black metal, even fucking HAIR metal, i love my metal.

This album is crap. It sounds really badly produced, which for a band like metallica is inexcusable. Sure, they were going for the garage rock thing, and that's fair enough if your heart's in it, but it really doesn't sound like they were making all that much of an effort.

Maybe they've just lost it, i dunno.

His voice sounds weak at bits, and as has been mentioned, the drums sound awful.

It just seems to me like they weren't trying, i dunno.

There have been some awesome rock/metal albums released in metallica's absence, and i'm not saying they should have copied anyone, but in comparison this album sucks. Look at kill 'em all. An amazing album, and their first. It really was something new and exciting. They used to be cocky bastards because they knew they were something special. Now they just think it.

is this yet another example of bands that think being famous at some point they can turn any bollocks out because true fans buy every release.....pure bull shit. total dissapointment.makes me laugh all the bands that keep releasing the best of/greatest hits/live albums etc lets have some decent shit. the light house family have a release out i think it is called the best of and it states on the back "previously released as the greatest hits" why do you want to buy an identical album just differently titled. i'm not supprised at the amout of music piarcy.people are fed up with being ripped off.my personal hate is local radio that plays the same top twenty singles day in day out all day. so fucking boring!!! i would never buy something after hearing it 50 times i one week.

Posted by pHo on 06-05-2003 05:58 PM:

also the lighthouse family truly are one of the worst fucking bands i've ever had the misfortune to listen to. every single damn song sounded the same, thank god they dont release any more as they truly were the musical version of AIDS.

they were just an example of how record company's rerelease the same tracks to make crappy best of's etc. there are too many crappy no talent bands.local radio seems bias towards the top 20 not the real enthusiast's music taste.

I am refraining from posting any of my thoughts in here, because:

A) My post count would increase tenfold.
B) I'll probably end up violently abusing someone
C) I'll preach about how Metallica haven't sold out with St. Anger.
D) I can't be bothered atm... I'm listening to the album

It will definitely be the best #1 album we've had so far...I mean, 50 Cent? Linkin' Park? Kelly Clarkson? True, it's not the best Metallica album ever, but...it's an improvement. I enjoyed some of the songs, and didn't think much of many of the others. With that said, I'll give this album a B-

Cuffsy first (and last?) ever review(!)

Well what can I say? It's a time where TV season is over, "nu-metal" is dying (yes, even Linkin Park.) and to be honest, a back to basic album by Metallica is damn welcome. It's raw, almost gritty. Sure it's nothing new, but it wasn't ment to be. It's ment to scream "We've always been Metillica, no need to go and search for fans in the mainstream."

Thrash metal. Such a fucking change these days from the ordinary crap thats played. I mean, even bands that I used to like have become weak, Less Than Jake anyone? Their latest album, Anthem sounded too commercial-minded to me.

But back to the topic, the title track, St. Anger just roars of teeth-clenching riffs, you'll be singing it in your heads for days!

Maybe this won't please hardcore Metillica fans, but it's a damn good change from the norm of todays music scene.

7/10

loads of bands are going "back to basics". thing is, metallica consciously did it, and are TRYING to.

shit, it's not their worst album, but that just goes to show how bad some of their other stuff was.

it's got an ok track or 2, but a band who were once as mighty as metallica shouldn't be making this shite.

sure, it'd be stupid to expect a band to get better with every release, and i'm not one of these dicks who only thinks a band's old stuff was good (radiohead just made their best album ever, imo, and darkthrone too) but this really doesn't sound like they care any more.
