Review (2003) Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom

If you have ever been to Disneyland or Disneyworld, by now you know they have a ride there called Pirates of the Carribean, and they are bringing it to the silverscreen in perhaps one of the better Pirate movies today.

Director Gore Vibinski brings Pirates of The Caribbean to the screen in one of the more Entertaining Horror/Action/Comedies I have seen this year. And You don’t have the curse of the Pirate movies to haunt you, like it did Director Renny Harlin and Actress Geena Davis.

The Story follows Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow as a dim-witted but intelligent Captain, who’s life is easy going, until his ship, the Black Pearl, is stolen by the Evil Captain Barbosa, (played the gleeful Geoffrey Rush), and Captain Sparrow tries to get in back through the daughter of the Local Governor (played by Tomorrow Never Dies Jonathan Pryce), Elizabeth Swanson (played by the gorgeous Kiera Knightly (Bend It Like Beckham), whom is Kidnapped by the Captain Barbosa and his ghoulish men, who is trapped between Life and Death. Thus bringing the CGI and the fun of the side of the horror.

Captain Sparrow teams with Elizabeth’s Childhood friend, Will Turner (played by Lord of The Rings, Orlando Bloom) to get her back and exact some revenge on Captain Barbosa.

In a side plot, the duo and their crew are pursued by Elizabeth's betrothed, the debonair, ambitious Commodore Norrington played by newcomer JACK DAVENPORT, aboard the HMS Dauntless. Unbeknownst to Will, there is a curse that has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever. The Curse of The Black Pearl can only be broken only if a once-plundered treasure is restored.

Director Verbinski makes his mark, as I loved Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the easy going Captain.

Johnny Depp is fantastic as the rougue Captain Sparrow, and Orlando Bloom is developing into a major action star.

Pirates of the Caribbean is Rated PG13 for language and violence.

This movie gets a 9.5 out of 10.

Movie sounds great. I can't wait to watch it, I think Johnny Depp is a great actor and I have a lot of respect for Orlando Bloom, he's turning into a good actor aswell.

Nice! Can't wait for this one I think its gonna be a class movie, some great actors in there as well.

I thought the idea of actually using a "loved" theme ride for a movie was pretty lame, (and now they're doing that Haunted Mansion movie w/ Eddie Murphy off another ride, I think) but all the reviews so far have been pretty positive, so it's looking good. Starts tomorrow...w00t...also, it's interesting that it received a PG-13 rating, since it's Disney and Bruckheimer's been striving to do kid flicks. (like Kangaroo Jack)

No surprises in that review, Depp and Rush are spectacular actors, and Bloom is coming up fast. I can't wait till wednesday.

I love both those rides at Disney. I always ride both of them, and the viking one in Epcot.

I must agree with MovieGod on his review, the film was well done and full of laughs, and had a great cast to boot. Jerry Bruckheimer really needed this kinda movie after Bad Company.

Looking forward to this, been on both rides at Disneyland and Disney World, so I find it pretty interesting that they are basing a movie on a ride. This one looks pretty good from what I've seen in online trailers and on t.v.

Overview – No Spoilers

Okay, now… whether you’ve heard of the story or not… well, you’ve probably heard of the story… I mean… c’mon… best-selling book, made-for-TV movies, and a ride at Disney World!

While the movie does not settle the ever-going pirate’s verses ninja’s debate, it does a good name for pirates. It involves a crew of pirates, a disgruntled ex-captain, and a pair of lovers. Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp, Blow) is said disgruntled captain. His crew went and screwed him over, involving a mutiny. They left him for dead, and the impetuous Sparrow manages it out alive. While his tactics are… questionable, at best… his plan generally carries through. You know, it’s just that kind of typical cinematic irony.

Well… the crew which kicked out Mr. Sparrow (Depp), gets greedy, uncovers a curse. Well, you know what happens next. One of the lovers (Keira Knightley – Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace) is the necessary cure for the curse. So, of course, the other lover, has to go save her (Orlando Bloom, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers). Teaming up with the infamous pirate, William Turner (Bloom) and Jack Sparrow make leave to get back what’s theirs… a boat and a girl… yarrr… ‘tis a good story.





Review – Spoilers may appear in background color

Coming from someone who’s read many renditions and of the story… hell… I rode the ride. This entitles me to be an expert on this scenario… So listen up. This movie was good.

Johnny Depp… man that was one of the most convincing roles I’ve ever seen acted it. His performance was an eccentric and convincing role of a pirate. I don’t know if it’s just his ability to be a good addict to things, though. I mean… in Blow he was hooked on crack, and now in Pirates of the Caribbean he’s a drunk. Whatever he’s doing, Depp just better hope Hollywood keeps putting out movies requiring addicts and keeps putting Robert Downy Junior in rehab centers.

As per the other roles, they were done fairly well. The CGI was far from perfect, however, who am I to say what a skeleton looks like. I’m afraid that the computer generated affects are becoming kind of redundant these days. This is not to say the movie didn’t offer them up on par to any other movie, so at this point I’m not going to condemn it. They were done well, that’s it.

This is not your typical Disney movie. It starts with the whole fact that it’s not animated. However, it becomes racy, even at times. This movie uses a clever humor that is pirates along with the usage of a keen, strong story-line. If you’re planning on seeing a movie this weekend… see this.

The problem I had with POTC was when Barbossa and the others turned into skeletons every time there was a full moon, it was just pathetic. I'd have to agree with what the critic in the Washington Post wrote: "And the computer-animated skeletons -- which, true to their origins as animatronic haunted-house props, herk and jerk about like cheap marionettes -- are simply dumb. Disney's "Pinocchio" was more lifelike." Other than say, the last 30 minutes, the movie was entertaining and I'd give it a 7/10.

Going to see this after work..hope its as good as I hope it is

I dunno but once again I think this movie is rated to high. The preview made the movie look awesome, but the movie just didnt turn out the way you saw the preview really. I thought that it mite have been a little scary (lacked none of), romance (which had), and more. But it seemed boring at some parts and didnt really give you the suspense that you were looking for. I'd personally give this movie a 8/10.
