Been a while since we posted a new news weekly so I figured I'd do it this week..

FINAL DSTINATION 2 director has alien CONFRONTATION

David Ellis, the director of FINAL DESTINATION 2, is now attached to helm a science fiction film titled CONFRONTATION. The script hasn't been finished yet, with scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway working on it.

The story is about a hostile alien spacecraft that is brought down by the United States military. After retrieving the spacecraft the alien race that launched the vehicle implements a rescue mission for the craft and its occupants, and they're not afraid to use extreme force to accomplish their mission.


Ellis was second unit director on many films, such as THE MATRIX RELOADED and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. He will first make CELLULAR for New Line Cinema.

Let`s get ready to slaughter!

New Line Cinema is pulling out all the stops as it ramps up towards the release of FREDDY VS. JASON. Next Tuesday at the Jubilee Theater at Bally's Las Vegas in Las Vegas there will be a somewhat unusual pre-fight press conference: Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees will weigh in and answer questions from members of the press before they go head-to-head in the movie. The event will be emceed by famed fight announcer Michael Buffer (that "Let's get ready to rummmmble!" fellow).

Krueger, who has 30 kills spread out over the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET franchise, might be the underdog. Jason has an impressive 127 kills and has the edge in terms of weight, but does the hockey masked maniac have a defense against someone who slaughters you in your dreams? Bally's will even be laying down the odds on the outcome of this battle of the slashers.


FREDDY VS. JASON opens in theaters one month to the day of the pre-fight event, August 15.

Now it`s the girls turn to be bad

They're calling it BAD GIRLS. That's the unofficial title of a new action movie set up at Paramount Pictures that will star Queen Latifah (CHICAGO) and Jada Pinkett Smith (THE MATRIX RELOADED). Things are still developing and neither actress has signed a contract just yet, but both are definitely attached.

Pinkett Smith's husband's production company, Overbrook Entertainment, and Queen Latifah's company, Flavor Unit Films, will produce the film together with former Warner Bros. president of production Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The story sees Latifah and Pinkett Smith playing police officers and close friends, and somewhere along the way they chase down bad guys (or girls, who knows?) Naturally the law enforcement, heavy action elements and the fact that Jada's husband is Will Smith have drawn comparisons to Michael Bay's BAD BOYS franchise.


If all deals can be wrapped up with the Paramount lawyers soon (and if someone can pick a title for the film), filming could start early in 2004. It's all up to the agents and managers now.

Bridget`s CINDERELLA MAN

CHICAGO leading lady Renee Zellweger has agreed to star opposite Russell Crowe in CINDERELLA MAN, a drama to be directed by Ron Howard. She'll team-up with Crowe after finishing work on the sequel to BRIDGET JONES DIARY, scheduled to wrap around the end of the year.

CINDERELLA MAN is the story about Jim Braddock, a boxer from the 1930s who fought a bloody match-up with heavyweight champ Max Baer. Braddock's fight earned him a place in the history of the sport. Zellweger will play Braddock's wife.

WWE goes to the movies

Expanding their entertainment empire into the realm of Hollywood, World Wrestling Entertainment (or for short the WWE) has picked up a pitch for an action movie from screenwriter Alan McElroy (BALLISTIC: ECKS VS. SEVER, SPAWN). Details about the untitled storyline are being kept a secret as WWE Films thinks they've got a box office winner.

McElroy will now write the screenplay for the movie and think of a groovy-sounding title for it.

Pacino Looking to Be the New DON

Al Pacino is in negotiations with MGM to star in the Mafia comedy DON CORNELIUS. In the film, a middle-class accountant life is flipped around when he's pulled into the Mafia because his father (Pacino), the head of one of the five New York families, becomes the target of a hit. Pacino and MGM are reportedly at odds over his salary for the film.

Whitesell to Direct CATS & DOGS 2

John Whitesell is in negotiations to direct CATS & DOGS 2: TINKLE'S REVENGE for Warner Bros and Village Roadshow. The sequel to the 2001 film will continue the war between cats and dogs. Tab Murphy is writing the script. The film should hit theaters in summer 2005.
