2 Many Djs - Live At Le Mouv *DAB* (2003)

What can you say about the Soulwax Dewaele brothers that hasn't all been said already. It took a long time for their unique DJ style to be widely accepted, but since the mainstream acceptance of Vol.2 in the 2 Many DJ's mix CD series hit the shelves to critical acclaim, the series has now become more than a novelty, more than a cult phenomenon. It's something bigger than that, much bigger.

Although in recent years you'd be forgiven for thinking this style of mixing is something relatively new, it's not, i mean, throw in old skool comparisons and you the first thing you would come up with is the legendary DJ sets from one of the innovators of modern hip-hop, Grandmaster Flash, who had a unique style cutting up samples of classic records to hip-hop beats which evolved to current hip-hop DJ sets that we all know and enjoy today. Throw in a modern-day comparison and you could come up with artists like Aim and David Holmes, the latter of which bafflingly figured out a way of making Bridget Bardot records more than just cult cool.

With the Soulwax mixes you could compare them to the aforementioned, but then again you cannot, although the premise is similar, the end results of their mixes are something way beyond anyone's imagination. Fans of the series will already know this, newcomers will not, and will probably be slightly perplexed by the tracklist on offer. For example, mixing the Dolly Parton classic 9-5 in to Epele by Royksopp[/i]; and then there is the simply awesome homemade Soulwax remixes like Dreadlock Child which fuses together Dreadlock Holiday by 10cc with Independent Woman by Destiny's Child. And that's just for starters. This is a live mix recorded live on Paris radio station Le Mouv so all issues with copyright clearance more-or less go out of the window. For the actual retail mix CD's, clearance had to be gained for every record used. Some tracks were denied clearance by greedy artists and such like, but that is where genius comes in. For example, Soulwax wanted to use a sample from the awesome track Intro/Running by Alan Braxe and Fred Faulke. They were denied clearance so just used the sample from The Jets classic Crush On You which was used in Intro/Running, then grabbed another record and re-edited the entire thing so it sounded similar to the record they wanted to sample. Thus beating the clearance system. Genius.

Unfortunately a tracklist isn't to hand, which is a shame, but if you download this mp3, skip to 41:58 and watch your jaw drop to the floor in awe when the Michael Jackson/Dragnet/Cocaine soundalike track Thank You Baby kicks in, it's something unlike anything i've ever heard and is just a glowing example of the genius behind the Soulwax brothers.

You must download this set. Make it your duty to do so. Then go and get every other mix set under 2 Many DJ's and Hang The DJ. Your life will not be complete until you experience at least one of their sets. This stuff is unique because it appeals to everyone, this is the stuff that makes music so enjoyable. This is unique and anyone who tries to immitate these sets will never do it better.
