Johnny English....Great movie, but they fucked up in there...

The director needs to get his facts right. Ok, Johnny English was a groovy movie, but there is a factual error in the movie.

SPOILER ALERT

At the end of the movie where Trevor McDonald does the voiceover. He says that Sauverge was charged with 'high treason', an act of crime still punishable with the death penalty under UK law.

END OF SPOILER ALERT

Well. I thought the death penalty in the UK was entirely abolished, including High Treason. So i did some research and it seems i was right in my initial judgements.

Taken from a misc website:

July 31st. 1998. High treason and piracy with violence ceased to be capital crimes.

27th January 1999. The Home Secretary (Jack Straw) formally signed the 6th protocol of the European Convention of Human Rights in Strasbourg, on behalf of the British government formally abolishing the death penalty in the UK. It had been still theoretically available for treason and piracy up to then but it was extremely unlikely that even if anyone had been convicted of these crimes over the preceding 30 years that they would have actually been executed. Successive Home Secretaries had always reprieved persons sentenced to death in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man where the death sentence for murder could still be passed and the Royal Prerogative was observed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was passed in 1998 and 1999. Johnny English was made in 2003.

Therefore i am awesome and superb in every way. I thank you.

Groovy Tid-Bit M$

I was not expecting to like this movie, I thought it was down right halarious. Mr. Bean still has it. Rowan Atkinsin was much better in this than he was in Scooby Doo.

as the film is fiction then that would mean that normal rules/laws are worthless.as fiction covers a broad spectrum and gives licence to strech the truth or completely ignore it.

Even still, the movie claims that high treason claims the death penalty. It is still a factual error.

lol its a movie ffs....if it was a more serious movie maybe then it would warrant a "wtf??" but lol its a movie about a bumbling secret agent what do you expect.

Also imo Black Adder was Rowan Atkinson's best work, funniest shit ever.

It's listed as a goof at imdb.com:

Anachronisms: At the end of the movie, newsreader Trevor McDonald says that Sauverge was charged with "high treason", a crime "still punishable with the death penalty under UK law".
